I have been walking 3-4 times a week for about 2.5 miles. I walk pushing my son in his stroller so even though I feel like I am almost running, I'm really not. It takes me about 40 minutes to walk 2.5 miles.
I want to tone and I know this probably isn't enough. Any suggestions I can do with my one year old son in tow?

Good luck all!!

If you are walking 2.5 miles in 40 min then you are walking about 3 mph....to me that is fast...in fact today was THE day. I met my goal...I walk 2 hours 3 days a week....usually that means about 5 miles or so....today I got 6.06 in that 2 hours....3 mph...which was my goal....so I would say you are walking at a good pace.

With what I have been doing I am seeing good toning in the thighs, calves and buttocks. I can even see muscles in there!

2.5 miles in 40 minutes is great!

I do 3.5-3.7mph on the treadmill at the gym...I sweat more than when I do the other elliptical thingy(I dunno what it's called!)

I know that everyone thinks "speed" matters and it does to some extent, but actually "target heart rate" will give you better results for measurement. THR gives you several different zones within your own exertion. The lowest level, known as rest burns naturally but you are too far below THR to do any activity based burning. The next is "fat burning" zone which is what most people trying to get in shape are looking for. The highest zone is known as "cardio training" zone and it's just what it sounds like. You are pushing your cardiac efficiency points to higher and more efficient levels. Many athletes use this zone through intervals and sprinting in relation to their specific sport.

I would suggest you figure out your target heart rate for fat burning and cardio so that you can acurately train without wasting your time. As you mentioned the elliptical trainer, it could plssibly list the THR on the front of it, but I would talk to a trainer or check online to find yor own specific THR.

Good luck!
