mmmm I love corn on the cob. I had about a half an ear last night, with butter of course. The figures I get on fitday seem to vary quite a bit. Atkins only give a .5 cup measure. It seems to vary anywhere from 14 gm. carb for a whole to ear to over 30! Anyone else occasionally enjoy this treat? John 202/176.5/170

| Yes, John...I cannot go all summer and not have fresh sweet white corn at least a couple of times. How do you stop at half an ear??!! I am originally from farming country, Lancaster, PA!! You can't really drive anywhere at home without driving in between fields full of corn!! And my middle son's favorite food is corn...lol!! So when he sees a road side stand with fresh-from-the-field corn, we HAVE to stop!! I had the same trouble checking for a count! | Ya know , good sweet corn only comes out once a year around here, and the other night I hogged out on it BIG I think I ate about 4 ears and was stuffed, but I most likely won't eat it for another year. And I wonder how much of it actually gets into you as it seems to come back out with a vengence, if ya know what I mean. Jackie |

LOL at the quick passage issue, Jackie! I generally have sweet corn in season at a rate of about a half an ear a week - with LOTS of melted butter. (With my usual Sunday BBQ.) I can't eat more than that at a time due to my blood sugar issues. But I will not deny myself produce in season (including veggies and fruit). I just watch the amount. I also make sure that whatever the longed for item is the last bite of the meal with which I eat it. Two reasons for this. The first is physiological. I find that my blood sugar rises much more slowly if I eat a high glycemic item after first eating my usual quota of fat & protein. The second is psychological. (The recency effect.) One tends to remember the last thing - be it information or food - best. I wanna SAVOR that goodie. Maggie 5'1" Atkins since '98 (160) Maintaining nicely (110) Redhead until further notice!

I see what you mean - the similar food descriptions in the nutrition dbs have different values when it comes to corn. I presume that's due to different types of corn and different "average" sizes. FWIW, I get these figures from DietPower's database for fresh corn on the cob: Corn on the cob, sweet, yellow, raw, average ear (3.2 oz of kernels) 78 cal 17 g carb 2.5 g fiber 3 g protein Corn, sweet, white, on the cob, boiled, drained, average ear (2.7 oz of kernels): 83 cal 19 g carb 2 g fiber 2.5 g protein Corn, sweet, yellow, on the cob, boiled, drained, unsalted, average ear 98 cal 23 g carb 2.5 g fiber 3 g protein The only values I saw that were higher than these were for fast food corn on the cob, which probably has stuff added to it, raising the calorie, fat and carb counts. For some reason, frozen corn on the cob (both white and yellow) is lower: Corn, sweet, yellow, on the cob, froz, boiled, drained, avg ear (2.2 oz of kernels): 58 Cal 14 g carb 2 g fiber 2 g protein Maybe use a value in the middle of the range? DP shows a range from 12 to 20 g net carb, so I'd probably go with 15 or 16. ~~~Teelbee 174 (Mar. 2002, highest weight), 164 (Jan. 2003, begin LC) 164/135/137-134 remember, amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic

Thanks for the replies. It's a great feeling to know that eating a bit (I kind of like the .5 ear once a week) during corn season is an allowable occurrence. (no one said "NO, STAY AWAY from it") I live in an agricultural area, our valley is known for apples and pears. Any apple or pear eaters out there? John 202/176.5/170

I'm an apple and pear eater! When the Bosc and Bartlett pears are in season, I happily eat one or two a week. I love them TOO much to avoid them. I do avoid the corn-on-the-cob, however, because I'm allergic to corn. Whee. Emelia "We can only learn to love by loving." - Iris Murdoch, Irish writer 294/208/174 since 25-Nov-01
