Default New Tracks for the New Year (January)

This morning I was enjoying my coffee and enjoying the opportunity to carefully read the paper. As I read Deay Abby's list of resolutions, I thought that they definitely apply to us. May we each have a great New Year, and most of all remember that we only have to control today --- yesterday is over and tomorrow isn't our problem yet. So, in case you haven't read them, here are the Dear Abby New Year's Resolutions:

Quote:
Just for today, I will live through this day only. I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to overcome all my problems at once. I know that I can do something for 24 hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.

Just for today, I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away and fill it with sunshine.
advertisement

Just for today, I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct those things I can correct and accept those I cannot.

Just for today, I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer.

Just for today, I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will be kind and courteous to those who cross my path, and I'll not speak ill of others. I'll improve my appearance, speak softly and not interrupt when someone else is talking. Just for today, I'll refrain from improving anybody but myself.

Just for today, I will do something positive to improve my health. If I'm a smoker, I'll quit. If I'm overweight, I'll eat healthily - if only just for today. I'll get off the couch and take a brisk walk, even if it's only around the block.

Just for today, I will gather the courage to do what is right and take responsibility for my own actions.
Happy New Year's my friends --- Let's do it right....... JUST FOR TODAY!

What a great post, Judy!!! Thanks! I also love the title for the thread!

"Just for today." Umhmm. Well, THAT is doable! Just for today I am drinking my water and have eaten lc both for bkfst and lunch. I'm going to try and stir my physical self out to take a walk later when I've finished my writing.

I'm actually feeling better than I did yesterday. I don't know what got to me but whatever it was, it's gone. I'm working hard at creating a sermon for tomorrow in light of the horrible news from South Asia. Woweeeeee.

Grace upon grace,
Peg

Peg, My guess is that you were tired from having company all week. When I'm tired, everything seems overwhelming. Sometimes I go so hard for so long without listening to my body that I just collapse. It's pretty easy to do that when things are off schedule and out of the norm.

I'm curious to know what you are going to say in your sermon about the Asian disaster. How are you going to explain the questions of "Why does God allow something of this magnitude to happen?"

Oh Judy: You are great! I just finished my sermon. I'm preaching the lectionary passages which are John 1:1-9 and 14-19. Focusing around "All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being." If God created all things, why did God created tectonic plates? And, "What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it." God enters into our life and our suffering. When life reaches its most precarious, we are assured of "grace upon grace" (vs. 16) because God CHOSE to enter into life as a human being. Tomorrow is Communion, so I will mention the meaning of the elements (as Js' body and blood) and the resurrection as the way tectonic plates shifted for God as human.

That's a thumbnail of it. It's not easy to understand a God who creates a world where such naked suffering can exist. It's also not easy to understand a God who enters into that suffering through the outpouring of compassion and generosity of so many people all over the world. 'tis always a mystery, isn't it?

Peace, Peg

Peg, you posted your reply just as I did when I responded to Maxi. I would have liked to hear your sermon. I certainly don't envy you trying to explain events of this Biblical magnitude.

The Dallas Morning News has started the year with a daily affirmation to help us get the new year off to the right kind of a start. Like a new habit, they are printing a new one everyday. I'll try to put them here for us. I thnik we need them as much as anybody does.

Quote:
Jan. 1: "What you can do is often simply a matter of what you will do." - The Phantom Tollbooth, Norton Juster

Jan. 2: "Never say you can't if you haven't tried." - The Real Witches' Year, Kate West

Jan. 3: "You're not obligated to win. You're obligated to keep trying to do the best you can every day." - Roar Softly and Carry a Great Lipstick, Marian Wright Edelman
So with those things in mind, I got specific with my resolution to loose those last five-six pounds. Here's today's numbers (somewhat guesstimated -- I didn't want to figure up a new recipe so I used something close.).

Calories: 1225
Fat: 83
Carbs: 38 - 9 fiber = 29 net
Protein: 86
Water: lots

If I could eat like this for a while, those five pounds would be gone soon.

Good suggestions from the paper, Judy! I especially like the first one!

yesterday was my "begin again" day and I ate out of control all day!

But, today has been better so far. Lc for bkfst, lunch, and snack. I'll fix dinner for myself before I head over to the church. I start teaching Confirmation tonight for every Sunday (I know it's Monday) night from now until May 1st. I dread it, sort of. I care about the kids, but it is such a prep time! This week is already shaping up to be a real tiring one.

this morning my weight was 181. That's the highest it has been for a loooong time. I've been drinking in the water. Hopefully that will give me a kick start.

Peace, Peg

Ok, so I had lots of confidence after yesterday. I was even down .5 to 140 this morning. But then ..... the day happened. I ate the regular breakfast of a light yogurt with about 2T of Carbwell cereal stirred in. Then there was lunch. We went to an Italian place called Johnny Carinos -- It was great. I had caesar's salad and stuffed mushrooms from the appetizer menu. Not bad overall, but impossible to track other than taking what was already in Fitday. Dinner tonight was the grilled chicken off a Whataburger sandwich. Again, not bad, but not great either. So, the totals for the day came out like this:

Calories: 1417
Fat: 93
Carbs: 84 -13 fiber = 71 net
Protein: 71
Water: better than I had been doing, but maybe not as good as yesterday.

Somebody track with me. It's the only way that I can be successful. I'm going to have to start a journal for the entries if you guys don't join in. I hate being the only one posting numbers.

Very existential. It's not so much the goal. It's the journey that really counts.

True.

Hold on, Judy!! I'm going to be tracking. I just don't have time this morning to set it up. I'll try to do so tonight when I get home. I've thought about doing a journal too.
Peace, Peg
I'm down a pound.

Thanks, Judy. Just keep hammering on me about this! I know I ~always~ do better when I track; and, thus, weigh and measure portions.

So, I've opened up DietPower and started tracking as of today. I aim to post the previous day's values each morning.

This wasn't the worst holiday season I've had for gaining weight, but it wasn't as "good" as I'd planned, either. Pants that were loose and baggy in the late fall now just fit, and are a bit snug when I sit down. I'm not used to having my waistbands dig into my skin when I sit down; and I don't like how that feels ( well, who would? ).

I'm still fairly inactive due to a problem with a tendon in my foot. But, I'm going to try to work in at least a 30 minute walk daily. I know that's not much, but I hope it leads to better things.

Okay, here's today's figures (they would have been better if I hadn't fallen into a bag of pork rinds).

142 lbs.
1803 calories (not gonna shed weight very fast at that level!)
126 g fat
42 g net carb (53 total minus 11 fiber)
121 g protein

I have truly been able to relate to each one of the daily affirmations. It's just so easy some days to make excuses instead of being truthful with myself.

Today's counts:
Calories: 1670
Fat: 121
Carbs: 62 -15 fiber = 47 net
Protein: 92
Water:not as good as it has been -- and I could tell it

Peg, and Teel, I'm glad to hear that you are going to fire up the programs and get back on track with me. I really believe that tracking and the accountability of putting it out there on this list is what helped me finally get to goal. This morning I was down to 139 again. I just hope it wasn't a fluke. I will get to 135 --- and I'm going to do it by tracking and posting and your help.

Well, the road to a fat body is paved with good intentions! (I know, a paraphrase)I got a new Dell Axim after playing with my Palm pilot for a year and never really getting it to work correctly to sync with my Outlook info. So, last night I didn't open Diet Power. I'll try tonight.

But, my weight was down to 177 this morning. Hallelujah! I know it's only 4 pounds since last week, but, hey, that's four pounds!! I've been eating clean and drinking lots of water. Yesterday I had the most gawdawful sweets cravings! I thought I was going to die. Anyway, I promised myself that I would drive through Dunkin Donuts on my way out of town, and DIDN'T do it!! Yay for me! The sweets craving passed and I was able to get through dinner and the evening without sweets. Did cave to some nuts about 9:30.

this is a REEEEALLY busy week. Lots to do and think about.
We're having a big snowstorm right now. It was due tonight and tomorrow, but came early. I, of course, am wearing my little leather flats with no boots. They are at home. um hmmm.

I'll try to post numbers later.
Peace, Peg

Ai, Ai, Ai! I would SO love to lose 4 lbs in a week. I think that skipping the drive through was especially praise worthy - good job sticking to LC!

Judy, I think those quotes are very insightful and merit seconds thoughts. Thanks for sharing the good ones with us.

A friend wants me to do a Dr. Phil plan for becoming your best self. It involves answering questions, introspection, writing memoirs, etc. But, jeez - I can hardly stand the guy, and his commercials are all over the tv. Maybe he helps people, but from what I can see, it's all about the money. My friend says it's a good plan regardless of who wrote it. Well, I just can't bring myself to buy his books, further enriching him. If I do it at all (not too likely), it will be with a 2nd hand book - so he doesn't make any money off it.

Had reheated cauli mash for breakfast, and I'll try to work in another helping of vegetables at lunch time. Hmmm, I have some left over spaghetti squash and leftover Sutter Home spaghetti sauce. I think all throw in a few frozen meatballs and call it a deal.
