Default JULY Tracking

Here it is July, you guys! This thread was started some time ago for some of us who wanted to keep track of our carbs by tracking them in Fitday or Diet Power. We did so for several months, and then found that factors other than what we put in our mouths influenced our new way of life. Slowly, the thread became a way to track what is going on in our lives much more than what we put in our mouths. If you find yourself needing friends and support in this way of life you are welcome to join. We are in the Vets Forum because most of us have been doing this way of life for a year or more. Some of us are at goal, and some of us are near it but find it rather elusive. Some of us are still working the way of eating and some of us are experimenting with what we eat (nice way of saying that we "stray" sometimes).

Smile Re: JULY Tracking

Well, welcome to July. Thanks for starting the thread, Peg. We'd love to have any of you who have LC'd for a while and would like company on the loss or maintenance road.

Tending to some June leftovers, yes the deed is done and I have the car! Now I'm paranoid about driving it, LOL! No fear there, though, since I may not have the chance until DH goes back to work Tuesday. And Peg, no sin to have a nice car with all the amenities, so you enjoy that Lexus SUV. No blushes necessary.

Alida, I take a combination of 5-HTP and Tryptophan at night. I started last summer actually, but discontinued in the winter and just restarted a few months ago. It does help with my inability to sleep considerably and takes the edge off my depression. Like Peg says, though, I'm not sure I'd recommend taking it without medical supervision, because messing with brain chemicals is tricky. If you take too much, for example, your body says, "hey, I have plenty of this serotonin stuff somehow, so I don't need to make any AT ALL." I do have professional medical guidance in that regard, and even so, it can be difficult to get it right....but having said that, yes for people who need it, it can work wonders.

On the hair front Alida, yup those gray ones do have a different texture don't they? I don't color, so all mine are "right there" and tend to look a bit frizzly/grizzly. I've found using a bit of product made for stying curly hair into straight styles really helps give my hair a more uniform texture--things like Frizz-Ease 5-Minute Manager on clean wet hair, or a tiny bit of Frizz-Ease Serum after I've styled my hair if the gray ones are popping out all over.

Thinking of TB today! Hope her new home closing is going well...

We don't usually have big plans for the holiday, but we may go see the Capitol Steps tomorrow night, if any of you are into musical political satire.

Judy, Donna, Shelley, Ilse, have a good one. Everyone else, out there

Ditto that about the blushes, Peg. Enjoy that Lexus. You've earned it!

LOL Brenda, about not driving your new car until DH goes back to work! Have fun!

Hmm, I've seen that Frizz-Ease stuff. May get some to have on hand once the conditioning of the new color goes away.

Is TODAY your move day, TB? Stay calm, stay focused, and drink lots of water!

On that 5-HTP . . . Jonny Bowden sells it on his site. Of course, even though he is well thought of in LC circles, that's not to say this stuff is OK . . . .

Well, I originally came on line now to ask all you DIY gurus the best way to take off wallpaper. I am thinking there really is no EASY way! Got home from my job at 12:30 and with the whole weekend staring me in the face, I was wondering what I could do that would be constructive, ya know? So I started removing the wallpaper in the kitchen. I do have some gel goop that you sponge on, wait 15 minutes then viola! wallpaper's supposed to come right off. HA! And, of course, I'd prefer not taking half the wallboard off at the same time. So far it's not too bad. Just curious if there's a better way.

Happy, Happy 4th!

Alida: One of the very best ways that I EVER removed wallpaper was with a steamer that I rented from a rental place. In lieu of that there is a preparation you can get at Home Depot or Lowes that you goop on. With that it is essential that you get one of those things that scores the paper. They have those at HD and L too. It may be a while before it comes off, but it will. Just takes patience.

"Doin' stuff" must be in the air. I've been giving thought to painting. Don't know what yet....the master bedroom and bathroom needs it, so does one of the other bathrooms. But, then I went back to surfin' the web like I do most days. Hohum.

Peace, Peg

Well...I'm the *queen* of wallpaper removal...hehe. I helped our wallpaper lady quite a bit while she was here. First of all, the wallpaper or top layer usually comes off pretty easy; it's the white paper *backing* of the wall paper that is a booger sometimes. Tina(my wallpaper gal) mixed up fabric softner...yep...good ole downey, in a spray bottle with water, and spritzed the walls lightly, wait a few minutes, then peel the white paper backing away. I'm not sure on the ratio of softner to water, not very much, but it did the trick!
Then, if you do get some little gashes or dings in the sheetrock/drywall, just get some joint compound or mud, apply with a putty knife and smooth it out well, let it dry, then sand it lightly and it should be good to go. Tina also *washed* the walls down with a large terry cloth with warm water to remove all the old paste after all the paper was removed. It's a long process for sure; but again, we had massive amounts of wallpaper to remove on walls and ceiling.
Good Luck...you definitely have more energy than I do this week end I think I'm gonna *cool it* and be perhaps just a little lazy this week end

Yeah, both Peg and Shell are right.....if the wallpaper is the older kind, it will need to be scored, and then probably steamed and scraped. If it is newer "strippable" the top layer can be peeled off gently usually, and the bottom paper layer/adhesive is what is left to deal with. Great idea using fabric softener, Shelley!

Alida, I didn't mean to imply that 5-HTP wasn't ok, but it is on a different level than the usual vitamin/mineral supplements, more on the order of self-administering hormones in potential power. So I'd recommend taking some care in observing yourself, keeping your physician in the loop, and following label directions at the least.

Shell, you deserve some down time!!

Blessed relief with cooler, sunny weather today; hope you all are getting some nice holiday weekend weather.

Oh, in answer to the jewelry/procrastination question. LOL, I haven't made a thing for weeks. At least I'm finally starting to get itchy to cut, mangle, and wham some silver

Hi everyone. It's Canada Day for us up here, so no work! That's a bonus. Actually, I shouldn't have said no work.....I've been cleaning house since 8 this morning and it's almost 3 now. I'm doing all the different things like taking down curtains and washing them all and washing walls. No idea where all the energy is coming from. Stupid day to do it too.....the weather is gorgeous and I should be outside. But, I'm sweatin' off the pound I gained last night having dinner with the ballteam. (we won't go there)

Brenda: You have a good memory. Yes, the old lady next door is the one that feeds all the stray cats. I don't think there are many left now. The SPCA has made so many trips out here and taken I bet close to 50 cats away. Instead of feeding some of the strays now, I just make a monthly donation to the SPCA and they can use the money however they like. You new car is gorgeous!!!! I had to laugh that you don't think you will get to drive it until Tuesday. Sounds like my hubby. Whenever we get a new car, he does all the driving plus when we park anywhere it's in the toolies so we have a five mile walk to wherever we are going. Wouldn't want anyone to touch the car! lol

Alida: I bet you look gorgeous after your hair appointment. I've coloured my own hair for years now. My hairdresser is good, but she's so busy talking that she doesn't always listen to what I want. I got fed up with coming out of there with almost black hair when my colour is an auburn that I decided to take care of it myself. I'd be afraid now to not colour it and find out how much grey is there. Do have to remember to make an appointment for a cut next week though.

Our baseball is over now except for 2 tournaments. I can't say I'll miss the traveling 52 miles each way for a game, but I will miss the people. Too bad the season is too short. We're all getting together next month for a weekend camping trip with no baseball involved so that should be fun. It's nice that all of us like to camp too.

Hubby is almost over his latest gout episode. Can't for the life of me figure out what caused this one. I've thought about everything he ate and none of it is on the bad list. I'm wondering if it was the orange juice that I use to make him smoothies. He hates bananas and gets bad leg cramps so I make him smoothies everynight and the cramps stay away. I changed to cherry juice from the health food store and the gout is starting to leave. This was the worst episode he's had yet. Hate to see him hurting like that.

My cold is still hanging on. The sore throat comes and goes every day. I think once the weather smartens up and stays warm it will help.

Shelly: Love the pictures. That's really a major change once the wallpaper came off. I looks really nice.

Well, I think I'm going to take the dogs and head outside for awhile. Might not get much done seeing as I'm pooped from all the cleaning. But, it will be nice to sit in the sun and just enjoy all the flowers. Almost all the lilies are in bloom and it looks pretty impressive. Now I just have to wait for the blue and the black lilies to bloom. Hope you all have a Happy 4th!!!

Shelly, I think your rooms are lovely. Although generally speaking I like stripes, I find your new look more peaceful, and I think the bath and MBR will look larger, too. Very pretty choices Your furniture and woodwork is scrumptious, too Thanks for sharing!

Donna, ouch for your DH. I understand gout is really painful. I've heard it can be food related; is it also stress related in any way?

I had to stop and think a second when I read "toolies" I translate to "boonies" and yes that's exactly what we've been doing--parking in the toolies/boonies and walking, LOL! I love new words!

You had a great idea, Donna, so I took the furgirls out for a nice walk.....enjoy the rest of your holiday with no more cleaning, ok? And hmmm, a baseball camping trip without the baseball--sounds like more fun than with baseball to me, LOL!

Hi all....... Peg, thanks for starting July. I hadn't even thought about it, and haven't been here to do it, anyway.

My conference is over. I should have just gone somewhere that would have required staying in a hotel. I had to leave by 6:45 every morning and got home about 5:30 each afternoon. Wednesday night I did stay in Tyler with DSIL. Yesterday, the alternator went out on the car that I was driving (thankfully after I got home.) Needless to say DH wasn't excited about that. The information received is useful, but before I ever left, DH asked me why I didn't just teach the darn thing instead of the school paying for me to attend. On Tuesday, the presenter asked me why I wasn't an AP grader and presenter. After thinking about it and talking (email) with another couple of friends who are presenters, I decided to apply for some of the positions. Working for College Board in the summer would pay about 1.5 times per week what summer school pays. I could make enough by grading exams and teaching 2-3 workshops in the summer to cover both my summer school salary and the stipend for Academic Decathlon. It might be a nice change. I plan to work on the application and written requirements next week.

There are so many things to comment on that happened to you all this week. To save time, let me just say that I hope things are better for those that had troubles and congratulations to those of you with new cars and good weeks. Most of all, TB, I hope your move goes well!

Glad to back among you...........

Hello, everyone. I'm reading this thread at 6 in the morning, and the ambition is already making me tired! Wallpapering ... housekeeping ... conferencing! I've been very lazy in the exercise dept. this week, and a long run seems like a nice idea, so I'm sitting here in my workout clothes waiting for the sun to come up. The weather has turned a tiny bit cooler.

I have no other ideas for the holiday weekend.

Bren, enjoy the new car. Dings happen, but hey--as my husband has said to me (God love him!) "It's only a car." Come to think of it, since I crashed the Miata in January, the only remaining panel of the original exterior is the trunk lid. And that ten-year-old car looks and runs great.

Best wishes for all projects. And have some fun, too!

Happy 4th weekend! I hope it goes well with everyone. I certainly am enjoying our couple of nice weather days. The air conditioning is off and the windows are open, enjoying the coolish nights and the daytime breezes. I had open houses Thursday (a 90 degree day) and a bit on Friday (my DH had 1/2 day at work, which I wasn't expecting). Noone came on Thursday. I got to catch up on my TV watching. Friday, two sets of people came. However, Thursday, my parents came over for a bit, so my dad could help me with the doorbell. It was a simple $2.65 part (the part you push) and the doorbell works again. I haven't seem my DD and grandkids for a couple of days.

We went to see "War of the Worlds" yesterday. My DH was surprised it was better than he thought it would be. Definately very intense.

No particular plans for this weekend.

Brenda, congrats on getting the new car! Is your DH off on the 5th too! I'm pretty sure mine goes back to work that day. he works in Lisle, where they are having the "Eye in the Sky" weekend with lots of hot air balloons. My hair is pretty frizzy, most likely from swiimming so much. Ijust figure I need to live with it. I haven't tried any hair/frizz taming products.

I found a perfect place to scrounge for boxes to pack stuff up. I just need one of those grabber, reacher things that arthritis sufferers or people who pick up garbage from the street or sidewalk use. The boxes are in a paper recycling dumpster at one of the schools in our district that is pretty close to our house.

Everyone sounds so busy. I am being pretty laid back so far.

Our pre-drywall meeting with the builder is Wednesday morning.

Morning all........(Yawn!) DH let me sleep in and even though it's 9:45, I'm still sleepy. Going to start pouring in the caffeine here in a minute.

Good to see you all. I bought Leslie Sansome's tape, Barb. I haven't watched it yet though. I still continue to be inspired by your internal ambition to exercise. I know it changes ones body, but I just can't seem to get up the energy.

I'm sitting at the blank cooputer screen hoping that I will be inspired. It's Saturday again! Groan.... One of our long time members died on Thursday. A wonderful young Mom with 5 kids high school age and younger. She has fought a valiant fight against cancer for more than 10 years. She has a dear, dear, husband. The funeral will be next Friday. I'm the quarterback for it, even though I probably won't do anything much. The "Sr" pastor (you know, the one I'm subbing for?) will be back from vacation on Thursday, and another dear friend of hers who is her "summer" pastor will also be there. They will, no doubt, carry the service. I just have to prepare the little details.

TB: I can't wait until you get your computer set up and let us know how the move is going.

Bren: Maybe you can sneak out in the car some today. Have you seen the commercial where the couple get up earlier and earlier so they can drive the new car? Reminds me of you!

We watched a remarkable movie on HBO last night. "The Girl In The Cafe." If you haven't seen it, I HIGHLY recommend it. It is quirky, funny, and riveting. It centers around the G8 meeting coming up this week. Made this year, it is incredibly relevant to what is going on in the world right now.

Well, back to staring a a blank screen. I'll check in later.

Well, this morning I checked the damage from the week's conference. Never let it be said that College Board let anyone go away hungry. Although I kept pretty close as far as appropriate foods, I darn sure loaded in plenty of it. There was a buffet breakfast every morning with plenty of fresh fruit, sausage, bacon, and generally some kind of eggs. I eat breakfast everyday, but it usually totals out less than 200 calories. Can't say I held anywhere close to that the last five mornings. Then there were the lunches. The foods served were more like what you would expect for a dinner. So, I ate massive lunches. The company serving the food makes absolutely wonderful chicken salad and pimento cheese. Of course I had to have some of that along with my salad, entree, and vegetables. As if that's not enough, there was also a break in the morning and the afternoon with soft drinks and snacks (peanuts for LC eaters.) Lord I ate more than a field hand this week. The scales welcomed me with a showing of 144 today. THAT'S BAD!!! I need to do some serious cut backs so that I will be able to comfortably button the jacket and skirt that I am wearing for DS's wedding.

Peg, by now you probably have this week's sermon done. What are you going to do with your Saturday mornings when your position ends? Saturday morning writing time has become a habit.

Ilse, good luck on getting the boxes. Sounds like a little "dumpster diving" is in your near future.

Barb, Congrats on the compliments you got yesterday and your friend's retirement party. I know those made your day! Enjoy today's run.

Bren, Have you been *allowed* to drive *your* new car yet? I checked out the pictures. It's a pretty sleek little auto.

Donna, A softball party without the softball game sounds like fun. Have a good weekend. Since the house is clean, it will set you up for a good week to come.

Shelley, Nice work on the walls in the bedroom and bath. You have such lovely high ceilings and a beautiful bed . The new look is very calming and restful. I know you are proud of your hard work. Take the weekend off to enjoy what you have done.

Alida, I bet you are getting a well deserved long weekend. Don't spend it all cutting designs for next week.

Teel, We are all thinking about you and the move. I hope everything goes easily............. no broken stuff!!

Enjoy your Holiday Weekend everyone!!!
