Default The National Weight Control Registry

This year marks my fifth anniversary as a participant in the National Weight Control Registry. To learn more about this unique, long-term study of successful "losers," click here:

http://www.NWCR.ws

I'm posting to encourage you, as successful low-carbers, to join this study. If you've lost at least 30 lb. and maintained for at least one year, you may qualify.

Originally, I lost 50 lbs. on a low-cal/low-fat diet. Unfortunately, after a few years, I slowly regained 20 lbs. That's when I turned to Atkins and found my ongoing, lifetime key to weight maintenance.

Although current statistics on the NWCR reflect a high percentage of low-cal/low-fat success, I'm confident that in time, low-carb eating will also begin revealing itself as a significant strategy for many of us. Your participation will help that statistical pool to grow and be noticed.

The two most important strategies noted by NCWR:
--consistency (including some form of accountability, like a food diary or regular weigh-ins)
--exercise

Congratulations on your Pre-maintenance/Maintenance achievement! Please add your experience to the study.

P. S. Not incidentally, being a participant in the NWCR study is yet another incentive for me to stay on-plan. I don't want to be one of those invisible drop-outs. And even if I gain some weight, for whatever reason, I hope to be faithful to the study. That's what it's for!

Maggie, that's great. Yesterday, I wrote a couple of e-mails to the NWCR sponsors to ask about low-carb statistics.

In general, their published findings do not focus on the type of diet, but on the behaviors. Consistency, exercise, self-monitoring--that sort of thing. The point is, weight maintenance (for anyone, but especially those with a genetic tendency to get fat) requires a lot of effort. Some news, huh?

I'd love to register someday! It is nice to hear success stories. Hearing from those who have been through the weight loss struggles is very encouraging. It bothers me when those who are skinny and eat junk give me advice.

Bluejay, observing your nearly 100 lb. loss is very impressive. Congrats and all good wishes for arriving at your goal. Of course, we all know it's a journey, not a destination.

Facing the fact that "normal" for me will always be some kind of maintenance program has finally sunk in. I'm thrilled that LC makes the effort so much easier to live with. Most people in my life now never knew me--or don't remember me--as a much larger person. But every day--and I mean every day!--I glance in the mirror and think--woo-hoo! That trim-looking gal is me--and always will be.:great:

Yanno, I think I registered a while ago. Then, the first year that a follow-up questionaire came, I never got around to sending it back. I have no idea whether I am still in the database, or if I would be accepted again.

Barb, I registered yesterday. It seems like it will be a good accompaniment to the CCARBS study in which I am participating. CCARBS stands for Controlled Carbohydrate Assessment Registry Bank Study. It is being conducted by the Albert Einstein School of Medicine of Yeshiva University.

Hi, King Henry. (Private joke!)

Seems like I signed up for the CCARB study, too. But I haven't heard anything from or about it in a long time.

Barb, I get occasional e-mails from them as well as the annual survey to complete.
