Default Leptin's role in weightloss management

I am encouraged if only because here is evidence that researchers are at least looking at the issues of weightloss ~maintenance~. Maybe someday, the medical community will have some therapies to help with maintaining weight loss.

MSNBC.com: Hormone injections may help keep weight off
Quote:
"Anybody who has ever lost weight and tried to keep it off knows ... that you never lose as much weight as you think you should. And if you manage to lose as much weight as you'd like to, it's very, very difficult to keep it off," Rosenbaum said in a telephone interview.

In the 1990s, scientists discovered leptin, a hormone produced by fat cells that caused rats to lose weight when injected. But it failed to have the same results in humans, except for people with a defect in the leptin gene.
and,
Quote:
The study of 10 obese and non-obese volunteers showed it is possible to restore leptin levels to a pre-weight-loss point, and in turn keep a dieter's weight stable.
... and,

But the effect is not permanent. It seems the body can reset its metabolic thermostat upward, to put on weight, but never downward, Rosenbaum said. This explains why 85 percent of people who lose weight eventually put it back on.

Great, just what I want to do is take two shots a day. I wonder how long it will take to get that in pill form?

oh, I'm not holding my breath.

I'm sure there's a lot more research into leptin and ghrelin and all those related hormones to be before they could come up with a theraputic treatment.

I've been so annoyed by the inadequacy of the maintenance phase guidelines in DANR and others. So, it's just sort of a relief to know that it isn't ~just~ a question of will power or habits. There's physiological reasons that make maintenance more challenging that most diet gurus think. Maybe someday, they'll be re-writing those Maintenance chapters with some bonafide helpful maintenance strategies.

Where do I sign up for the shots? I don't mind them at all. Though, I must admit that I only gained 5 lbs on my trip! I was surprised. When I told DH that I was sure that I had gained 20 lbs, he said, "So what else is new with your body image?" Yup. Sad, huh?

Peace, Peg

Most of the weight management pharmaceuticals seemed to be aimed at appetite control--as if it were all about being hungry and overeating. NOT. For many of us, the body has its own idea about when and why it stores or releases fat, increases or maintains lean tissue, sucks up and releases water, etc. It seems to be highly individual.

I'm alternately resigned and delighted that my body has decided on 135 as its happy weight. I'd still like to weigh 125, but my current maintenance routine is as far as I'm willing to go in reducing carbs and calories, with exercise every day.

A month ago, I gave up drinking wine. Did that have any effect? Not on my weight.

There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that the tendency to gain weight is part of my genetic inheritance. It will always be a challenge, and I feel sympathetic towards others--especially children--who will always be "different" in this way. You have to face the reality and deal with it, and it's not easy.
