| Today I had one of those head check/reality check kind of experiences. A good friend that I taught with for several years and her husband had a 50th wedding anniversary reception this afternoon. Keep in mind that I have been at the same school for 32 years, and obviously am one of the "more seasoned" teachers on the staff. There were lots of people at the reception that are retired and I have not seen in years. It was staggering to see how many of them had aged, and I don't mean that they had aged well. I came away thinking that either I am kidding myself, or I look darned good. They other realization is that I need to lose these extra 10 pounds that are stuck around my waist or I will be looking like many of them, too. (So, how long did my resolution last??? You guessed it, I just finished eating some no-sugar ice cream. ) Oh well, school starts in 2 weeks (August 7) and that causes enforced refrigerator withdrawal. Back on schedule and back on plan! Peg, I'm glad to hear that the buyers are still interested. I hope they meet your price and your conditions. When do your jobs end? Will you have to be out of the condo before the end of the jobs? I'll bet DGD must have been to church camp. Those are wonderful. Pretty soon you and Bob will be there and you will be able to take her to church with you some. I hope she does find a "home church" that she can attend regularly though. Donna, 122!!!! That's it.............. tell DH that you need more air-conditioning for the house. I can't believe that you guys can stand those temps. We got an incredible break the last two days. It only got to the mid 90s and we even got some rain yesterday morning. Terry, our night time temps rarely go below 80 at this time of the year. Shelley, don't be down about only being down 1.4........... I may have to dust off some old WW stuff of mine and see if I can get the old LCish version to kick in for me. Yes, like many of you, I am also a lifetime member. Actually, my goal weight was so low that at one time I went back and upped it to something on the high end so that I could go to meetings without paying. They even had a store front location very close to me. That's closed and I have no idea where they have meetings now. I believe that both you and Barb has said that it's both calories and carbs that count. I just sent Rachel an email. It's getting to be too many days since the last time we heard from her. I'm getting worried. Alida, I'm so sorry that Buddy is having a hard time. I hope he improves quickly. We are taking Lexie to the vet tomorrow for her fix. I hate to have to do it, but I would hate even worse for her to go into heat and to have a litter of puppies. Big dog =s big bill at the vet. She will spend two nights. The second night is because we are going out of town and won't be back to pick her up. Awww, Terry, another of the lifetime WW members. I think the program that you remember from the 80s was the same one that I was on. To be honest, I think it is much better than some of the ones that they went to later. The free wheeling plans had me free eating too many things. Isn't it funny how many of us have walked the same paths. Random answers and comments:

| Good morning! Peg, yup, old Swami was right! Congratulations on the fast sale! So -- did they meet your price on this go-around or did you end up taking a little less? Judy got it right -- buy lots of boxes! Around here, I think Ace Hardware had them about as cheap as anywhere. One trick that helped me in my last move was packing "drawers" in smaller boxes and putting them together in bigger boxes. Ya know how you remember that a small whatchamacallit was always in the middle desk drawer? Or the kitchen junk drawer? Another thing our mover let us do is keep some "soft" stuff in the drawers if it was not too heavy. Also (was it Judy?) who asked if your job at the church ends around the same time you have to vacate the condo? Judy, I remember that Twiggy look! You have my admiration if you even came close to it! At five foot one, I didn't have a chance. Way back when, I remember our schools in Chicago (grammar and high) started the day after Labor Day. Always made sense to me. Of course, this was before the schools were air conditioned. But they were these huge, well-built brick buildings. I think they let out mid-June for the summer. Brenda, you stopped in but didn't mention how your vertigo was. Getting better? Shelley, I had to laugh at everyone getting on your case about ONLY losing 1.5 pounds! You're going in the right direction, kiddo. Your plan sounds very sensible, livable and doable. Barb, now I remember your mentioning the hail damage during that last go-around. We had an old Chevy van that was made of some type of material that did NOT dent. Why they can't make all cars that way is beyond me. LOL. Bob helped Tiger, too. Whenever they play in Scotland, I am always amazed at how awful the courses look. Very wild and untamed and a bit brown around the edges. We visited St. Andrews once. Bob always sighs that he didn't have the forethought to play there. I had fun at the wool mills in the town. Can you say cashmere? And sheep? Sheesh. Sheep everywhere! It was May and so cold I had had to stop in at Burberry's any buy a scarf or two and some gloves! Terry, you have mentioned several times your problem with your sunscreen messing up your hair. Give this one a shot. Go to www.cosmeticscop.com and check out Paula's sunscreen. I use the SPF30. I use it as my moisturizer every day. Brenda may use it, too. I don't seem to have any problems with it and I sweat all the time tinting those d*mn windows! Donna, YIKES. 120??? And that's real temp and not heat index? And you don't have central air? All I can say is ... I would DIE. And become a real B*tch to live with. You have my admiration for taking it as graciously as you do. The wedding sounds like it was FUN. I don't know why some men just don't like to dance. I am lucky. My DH is a pretty good dancer. As a matter of fact, when we used to go to all these conventions, he was always dancing at the "balls." He would usually ask other women to dance, too -- those whose husbands didn't dance! And Rachel, how goes it? ----------------------- New owners finally came yesterday and picked up a file cabinet and all my Etchlike Temps. My office looks empty now! Looks like it needs a little re-arranging to fill in the empty spaces. I was very sluggish yesterday. I did not DO anything. Load of wash and that was about it. I guess all the emotion and worry over DH and Buddy finally wore me out. And there was so much I HAD to do. Oh well. Onward! BTW, last week was pretty good weight-wise. I am back to 143. I am hoping this coming week will see me dip a little lower. Only 14 more pounds to meet my new revised goal of 129. Did I say ONLY? Have a good one. I have to tint windows today. SIGH. XXOO

| Hey--it's a Good News Monday morning! Peg, we're delighted that this stage of your journey is done. Now it's time to pack up the covered wagon! I have no advice on that, since I haven't moved anything for 40 years. But...don't be sentimental. Throw away a lot of stuff before you move! ![]() Judy, recent chick flick I enjoyed was The Lake House. But it has some hospital/dying stuff in it, so I'm not sure your friend would find it all that romantic. I've heard that "Over the Hedge" is delightful. Donna, I break out in a sweat just thinking about you these days. Hang in there. What a sizzler. Sounds like the wedding was a cool time anyway. I stayed close to home on Sunday. Finished the whodunit (finally!) and started in on The Kite Runner which I can't put down. Once I made up my mind to "just say no" to the wine bottle, I'm doing better with that. It just doesn't work for me to say, "just a little." Can't do it. I'm trying to keep calories under 1500, but not skimping on good carbs. My body has its own idea what it wants to weigh, and I try not to fight it. Just trying to find healthy habits that my body and my mind can agree on. Time to hustle into the shower. Back later, my friends. |

| Hi Gang! Well, I managed to get about two hours sleep last night. It would have been productive time if I had gotten up and made lists, but I laid there and worried about amorphous stuff! So, I got up really early this morning and started making lists. I forgot about the "task" feature on Outlook. It is a neat way to prioritize and list what needs to be done. I'm not going to pack much. We have already been to UHaul and packed lots of stuff. We have it stored in a storage facility nearby. I needed to do that to "stage" the place. What left now is the stuff that I want packed by the movers. Neither dh or I should be lifting. The BIG item is our books. Put two Pastors in the same house with two libraries and it is pretty daunting. We've already pared down quite a bit, but still have to pare down even more. They are HEAVY! We've been moved before. The packers just move in a pack you room by room. (That is, if you are lucky. One time, the packers went from room to room to fill boxes. I found missing stuff for months) We need to decide today if we are going to take everything with us and look for a place that will accomodate it, or if we are going to look for a smaller place and store some stuff. Sheesh! Here is our condo. Click on the camera and take a tour of the place! I'll be back later, Peg

| Quick stop this morning with a reply from Rachel............ Yes, I am much better belly-flu-wise and scrambling to catch up on all the missed work. We have plane tickets so I can?t extend my stay here (although I may have to finish the final documents later in August and send them back on email). All that being said ? I have managed to give myself ?mouse elbow? (no kidding!) a repetitive stress injury ? I don?t know what the deal is ? this trip has just been a physical nightmare! I?ll be back soon? the writing/typing hurts so I need to conserve as much energy as I can to get the job done? please pass on to all that I?m fine and will try to get on briefly later today or tomorrow ? just to check in? thanks for nudging me ? I needed to let you all know I am out of bed again! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ See you guys in a day or so, I've got to go get ready to beat the Yankees tonight! ***They either have an incredibly slow server with the pictures of the condo, or they have already taken the pics down. I can't get them.

| Thanks, Judy, for checking up on our sickie in Armenia. Health-wise, I mean. She's in the pressure cooker a lot. Hope your trip to Dallas is fun. Peg, what a beautiful place! The view, the spaces, everything. Hope you'll find something as gracious and pleasant out west. Of course, you know better than to settle for something that's almost-but-not-quite. Those little doubts and compromises always come back to haunt us. Alida, this little break in the weather helps a bit. Not that 90 degrees is anywhere near cool. But still. You are one hard-working gal. And after the huge stress of the last few months, you can take all the naps you want. Trust me--the dusting will wait for you. Always does. Maybe your next present to yourself could be a month of Merry Maids. This should be a very low-key week for me. No meetings, no special events, no nothing. And I've got a good book to read. I can deal. |

| Busy day but I am very grateful to be working in air conditoning. Just a quick question for our resident medical expert, Shelley. My dil is really suffering with the heat due to the fact that she has no pores on the areas where she was burned. Now her legs are starting to split. The doctor has now found a procedure called esophogeal banding to make her lost weight. Have you ever heard of it? If so, what are the risks. Lissa is all gungho to have it done cause she heard of someone who lost 100 pounds after the procedure. I've tried finding something on the internet...but no luck. I doubt I could talk her out of it if it's not a good thing cause she just wants a quick easy loss. If she's just try our woe, I know she'd be much happier. She'll have to go to Alberta to have it done, which leaves my son with 3 little kids and a full time job. Anything you could tell me about it would be really appreciated. Thanks To everyone else...keep cool and I'll try to pop back in later.

| Donna, I'm no expert, but "esophageal banding" sounds a lot like "lapband" surgery for reducing stomach capacity without reconstructing the stomach and intestines. You might try looking it up with that keyword. Whatever it is, I guarantee it's no "easy" solution to weight loss. The demands of Atkins are NOTHING compared to the eating restrictions of these surgeries. I just hope your DIL's doctor provides all the pre-counseling, and no miracle promises. I sympathize with her suffering, but if she won't listen to your common sense ideas, it's not likely she'll be dissuaded by any dire warnings about this surgery. Do what you can....but she's a grown-up. Sort of. My brain isn't getting in gear today. I'm glad it's only Monday. Here's a link about lapband. The information I found in Google about "esophageal banding" didn't seem to have anything to do with weight loss, and was all technical//medical stuff. http://womenshealth.about.com/od/fit...losssurg_3.htm |

| Thanks Barb. If this surgery is anything like what I just read on that link, she'll never make it. Her diet consists of bread, potatoes and pepsi. She also loves ice cream and candy. I just can't see her sticking to this type of thing. I guess the main thing is I just don't understand why anyone would have such an invasive surgery done without trying something as simple as lc. She's seen what it's done for me, and still won't do it. I'm beginning to think she really likes surgeries....she gets the attention she feels she needs I guess. It's so frustrating for me....I can just imagine what her mom thinks.

| Donna, I went back to the site above, and read all the pages of the article. The writer lists many warnings. IMHO, no reputable physician would perform this operation on your DIL. However, there are countless "fast buck" clinics selling lapband procedures, and I don't think it would be difficult to find one. Other than referring your DIL (and especially your son) to educational materials, I don't know how you can prevent what she might be determined to do. I can only imagine your frustration. So sorry. Meanwhile, with some of you dodging off into Weight Watchers, I've been investigating Fat Flush. After a thorough browse of the book, I've determined that the list of things I'd be willing to do is a lot shorter than the list of things I'm UNwilling to do to follow this plan. So...on with my calorie-monitoring, wine-eschewing Atkins lifestyle. Lord, I feel like a saint today! |
