New Years resolution......... I will leave school by 4:30 everyday (well, at least most days.) I'm 3 for 3 this week in leaving after dark. Dark happens about 5:30 around here. I am totally with Barb, I'm ready for the short days to be over. I would never make it in Alaska (Oh heck, what am I talking about -- I've only seen about 10 minutes of daylight this week anyway.) Today someone asked me if I missed Academic Decathlon. It took me about 2 seconds to say NO! I am so glad that I don't have to worry about that this spring.

more randomness:

Brenda and Alida if you do try to color your own hair --- follow the directions for the roots application, then leave off the last step that says to "pull the color through" the entire head for five minutes. I never ever do that. The ends get porous and soak up too much color. Do the roots then shampoo it off. If you are in doubt about the color, my theory is to go lighter instead of darker. If your hair tends to turn reb or brassy and you want to avoid that tone, get an ash color. I would have to have another job to afford what it costs for base color and highlights. I'm with Barb...... give me some Loreal for 6 or 7 bucks. I can afford to keep the roots done at that price.

Donna, it's so good to hear that Sora is eating!

OK girls........ here is the ultimate in easy for resizing pictures. Go to

http://tinyurl.com/2meyw

Look in the right hand column and find picture resizer. Download it and follow directions to install. Then all you do is right click on a picture file name and select "resize pictures." It gives you choices for sizes. Select small and click OK. It will automatically reduce the file, give it a new name and put it into the curent folder. You can even do a batch of files at the same time. If the file is still too big (which I have never had happen), just click the small file and do it again. Ta Daaa..... all you need to know. No photo program needed. The only catch is that you must be using Windows XP.

Lesson for the day has ended......... The teacher is going to bed.

Oh Oh....... I forgot, the Mindless Eating book came yesterday. I'm still in the early chapters, but it is quite interesting. Of course a lot of the interest may come from the fact that my first field was home economics with lots of emphasis on foods (and clothing). I'll let you know what I think after I get more of it read.

And one last thing on the subject of home economics....... Peg, your dgd1 did a wonderful job on the pillowcase and the pillow. I am totally impressed. I'm so glad you decided to go with those projects.

Good morning!

Again, this has to be quick. I have to work on some Christmas Lists!

Donna -- YEA!! Sora is eating!!! And your right -- that old vet is an idiot. Unless Lily's appt. is within the next week, I would CALL Quinn and get your questions answered ASAP.

I am sorry you were having trouble sleeping. As for Tylenol PM -- some other companies make their "pain relievers" as a sleep aid, too. Glad things have settled down and you got a good sleep!

Judy, that picture was a STITCH. How the heck did he get that car up there? Let's see ... you resolve to leave school by 4:30. Sounds like a GREAT plan -- if you do it!

And thanks for the hair color tip. Today's my hair appt. so I am going to swallow my pride and ask him. It's not easy to tell your stylist of 15 years that you can't afford his color jobs anymore!

Shelley -- didn't the hospital do this to you a few weeks ago? Telling you you have Friday off, then, GOTCHA -- sorry, it's Thursday. Bummer. I can see how having three days in a row, especially this time of year, would really be a godsend.

Brenda, ah. The Chiro. Hope you are well-adjusted now! What's the story on your stylist? Are you able to sneak in an appt.?

ACK. Today I have to tint 30 french panes -- or as we say -- French PAINS. They really are a PITA. But it's close to home and I get paid. And I don't have to take the little one to school because I am going straight to the job this AM.

AHA. The scale dance begins. Up a pound. Knew it was too good to last! But I do FEEL thinner. Plus the new slacks I bought about a month or so ago, are TOO BIG. Yea!

Have a great day! XXOO

Good morning, m'dears. How did it get to be Thursday already??

Alida, good for you on the weight management front. The pants test is the only one that counts.

Shelley, do you think this "Oops, I made a mistake" phone call is the scheduler's way of avoiding looking you in the eye? I also recall this happening before within recent memory (recent memory being all I have left

Judy, that photo sizer sounds easy--too bad I'm a MacManiac and will have to stick to my own clunky (sort of) method with iPhoto. In an earlier post, when you said you don't have windows in your classroom, I was appalled. Is it an older building? I know that builders of a certain era aimed to save on air conditioning, and perhaps diminish student distractions. But when I had to teach--even for one evening--in a windowless classroom, it felt like prison. I endorse your Go HOME resolution 100%.

Donna, the news about Sora is great. You can start breathing again now.

My bedtime reading for a few days has been The Protein Power Life Plan. The Eades's are very smart, but this book goes into way too much detail about the biochemistry of nutrition, and ends up recommending what seems like extreme doses of esoteric versions of a long list of supplements. For example, you mustn't buy the common alpha-tocopherol version of vitamin E--you have to track down the kind that also has tocopheriens (that's not it--but close). Anyway, I'm obsessive enough as it is. So I'll be one of their "hedonist" types who just dabbles in what seems right.

I've been putting one TBS of coconut oil in my cereal (wheat bran/ground flaxseed/whey protein), as well as using it to make my muffins. It gives the cereal a smooth, rich texture that I really enjoy. I tried putting it in my coffee. The taste is fine, but I can't quite get past the lip balm effect--it makes your lips oily when you drink it. This is actually a good thing in winter, but still...

I'm not sure what coconut oil in this moderate quantity actually does for me, but it does provide a healthy oil for muffins and stuff, so I'll continue to use it. I certainly am not going to consume the "recommended" 3 1/2 TBS per day, which would add up to about 350 calories. Yikes!

Peg, Berta, Heather, Teel--how's bayou?

Back later.

FWIW, It might as well be "no window". I have one that is floor to ceiling about 18" wide in the very back corner of the room. It looks across to the brick wall of another building. My desk is in the far opposite corner of the room. I can tell if it is light or dark, and in some cases if it is raining. Yes, I am in a building that was built in the early 70s in the era of conservation and distraction avoidance. We do have some classrooms that don't have any windows at all. I couldn't teach in them!

If the following info is inappropriate for this forum, will any moderator tuning in please feel free to delete.

I'm informing you, my friends, of a possible business opportunity. Hallmark is partnering with Dayspring, a well-known publisher of cards and books for Christians, to create a home-party gift business called "Blessings Unlimited. If you consider yourself a Christian with an "evangelical" spirit, I can have info sent to you about becoming a consultant. This is sort of like the Avon Lady or Mary Kay rep for Christian gifts. You may also send me the names/addresses of people you know who might be interested.

I have NO personal stake in this except as a Hallmark employee interested in extending the family. I don't get a commission for recruiting.

Barb,

Personally, I'm not opposed to your post, but I'm thinking it's pushing towards a solicitation post, which Andrea does not allow unless it's a paid advertisment and arrangements have been made with her. Let's get Bren's opinion.
In the mean time, should anyone be interested in Barb's info, use the PM system or email her. I think that would be just fine.

hopefully back later...another errand to run and then some(more) gift wrapping to.
A Santa's work is never done...LOL.

(((hugs to all)))

Hi Gang!

I'm actually here and reading most of the time. We have just had a guest who talks non-stop, incessantly from the time he appeared in the morning (5:00 am!) until we finally go to bed at 10:00. My Dh has been his mentor for over 25 years. He has visited us wherever we live. He lives in Chicago. Whew! Dh is off to a luncheon appt. and I am planning to read and nap!

We went to the ofh yesterday and found, I think, the place we will renovate and live in. It is an upstairs apt in a 1929 house. It has four bedrooms and 1600 sq. feet. You'll hear more about it as we go along. It will require some major work. Because it is upstairs, it spans the entire house. It has more dormers than I can count, and as a result, has hardly a straight wall in the house. I suspect that we will gut the kitchen and the bathroom, and take down a wall or two. We are meeting with the VP for grounds and buildings tomorrow to talk about parameters and budget. I want to decorate it in the period in which it was built. I was doing that most of the night in my head, and woke up early to do more. Then, with the light of day realized that we need to find out about budget and what "they" will do and what "we" can do. It has been "updated" in early institutional look. Whew. Don't know how long that has been, but there are definitely several coats of paint everywhere. And, it is not new paint.

Thinking of you all these days. We've got most of our shopping done, and dh is wonderful about wrapping. As I mentioned earlier, we have been social butterflies, that's for sure. Tomorrow we drive to Palm Springs area to see dh's dd1 (I've talked about her, especially last year at this time), and then to AZ to see dh's dd2 for the weekend. We will see dh's dgd. She is his only grandkid. She's 22, and a rebel from the word "go." She doesn't go home at all, still blaming Mom and Dad for "bad" parenting. Sigh.

Peace, Peg

Just stopping in for a moment. Thought I had more time before heading out to church for the kids Christmas program practice but looks like I?m crunching for time. I need to make sure I get my dinner in me before going since they are also feeding the kids Pizza. They always over order so I want to make sure that I?m not overly hungry to start a binge.

Shelley - What a pain making plans and then having to change them because your boss made a mistake. You drove all that way.

Judy - Can?t wait to hear your take on the Mindless Eating book.

Alida - Great news on the loose slacks!

Donna - they are so excited for Christmas and I can?t wait for them to open up everything. They are so appreciative of what they get with lots of thank you?s even if it?s clothes. What good boys I have, I?m really fortunate.

Hi, I'm just taking a little time to check in. I've been reading along, although not contributing much.

I got called into do additional classes this week as there is a bug going around and several the regular instructors are sick. Yesterday, I did a puppet show with 2 other instructors 5 times in a row to classes of Hispanic pre-K students (Headstart). The show featured the Muppet characters discussing flood safety and I got to play Oscar the Grouch. My throat is still sore as I really got into producing his gravelly voice. Frankly, I don't think the kids got it. Several didn't speak English. One little tyke got scared just looking at us (big white women) and he cried Big Time. Turns out, the teacher had requested a program in Spanish, but... Oh Well. Still, most of the kids seemed to enjoy the music and funny voices.

Meanwhile, the semi-feral kittens I am fostering are coming along a bit. Although one still hisses at me sometimes, she's not biting or scratching; and she really likes a head and back massage. I bought them a tunnel toy today and they are having a blast with it.

DH is coming home early so we can go out Xmas shopping, so I need to go get ready.

Sorry for the short post... please keep my place by the fire, though.

My body clock doesn't know from VACATION, so here I am bouncing out of bed at 4 a.m. Actually, I just got up to use the bathroom, but when the cat heard me stirring around, she started yowling and scratching on the door, so it was no use trying to catch a further "catnap" after that. I think I'll head for the gym at 5:30 when it opens, and play on the machines.

Teel, you're giving 100% to that program, and they are lucky to have you. It would be more than a little frustrating, though, to perform your heart out for kids who really didn't get the intended message. Oh well. Think of them as a bunch of feral kittens. Bit by bit, they'll be coming around, and you helped a lot.

Peg, your prospective new home sounds like quite a project. But I think it would be fun to live in a historic house. You'll be on your way to Palm Springs today. Hope it's a good journey.

Happy Friday everybody.

Morning everyone!! My DH has gone back to bed this morning since he doesn't have to be at work until 4pm so I thought I'd stop by and say hi friends.

Had a wonderful blessing yesterday. We were a bit worried about getting done with Christmas shopping this year for our family. We have the kids covered, which is of course most important, but our other loved ones we were short. Well, my DH got a 10% raise!! We were able to get done with Christmas shopping yesterday and will do even a bit extra tomorrow and buy some more things for nephews, sisters, and nieces. Nothing fun, just clothes which will help them out. We're very excited.

Teel - Sounds like you had a full day yesterday!! I'm so shy that playing Oscar the Grouch would have made me a nervous wreck but would have loved to see you show. On the topic of making kids cry... I visited the Philippines this past summer and my brother said that I was the only white person most of the city had probably ever seen. To top it off I had dyed my hair red for the occasion in a city of people with black hair. Any way, I missed my kids SO VERY MUCH, but kids every where we went were frightened to come near me. Their eyes would grow wide and they would hide behind their mom. Teenage girls were different. If I looked at shoes all the girls in a store would be looking at the same shelf of shoes as me. I got a little glimpse of what it was like to be a celebrity around them.
Barb - hope you had a good time at the gym. I really got to get back to the gym but am thinking of being lazy for awhile. I still have my pedometer on and work on getting 12,000 plus steps in my day to keep the weight off. Back to working my heart soon.

Yeah, I think privately is fine

Hey Gang! I did the roots and they came out GREAT! Thanks for all the support and help, Barb, Judy and everyone. I did go to Sally beauty supply for a brush applicator and rat tailed comb--very cheap. Then I did the areas where my hair might part and around my hairline on the sides in case I pull my hair back. Since I used my "regular" color, it's just perfect, if I do say so myself! And I might let my hair grow a tad now, anyway. I did pull the color through, but only for a split second, because it helps the texture without adding color that I can see. Thanks again, everyone

Alida, I think you can do this, too, girl.

I won't try to catch up, but I will say the buffalo burger (sans bun) was delicious. Got it with a melted slice of pepperjack and grilled onions, and cottage cheese as the potato substitute. Well, I certainly got my protein Tuesday!

Judy, gotta laugh at Texas Christmas decor. Actually, that one of the things I love about Texas anyway---if you want to be an "individual" boy that's the place, LOL!

Peg, how exciting to see where you might live at the ofh. Nice square footage and sounds as though it could be a unique space when you get through with it. Will the stairs work for you?

Barb I use coconut oil for cooking, but don't add any extra to my regime, although it is supposed to be good for the dang thyroid. I figure I really don't need the extra calories truthfully.

Everyone else, hugs, and sorry to shortchange you.

BC, good going on the root job! All it takes is that first step. :gorgeous:

Heather, what was the occasion for the visit to the Philippines? Do you have family there? I'm all for redheads--and for being a celebrity for a little while, too.

Trip to the Wal-Mart and lunch with the boys was fun. I stopped at Tuesday Morning, which is close to where my dad lives. Nothing exciting to buy today, but they sure have a boatload of stuff to look at. I did buy a silly squishy vibrating pig pillow for my sister, the pig collector. After all, who can't use a squishy vibrating pig??

Vacation days go by fast.

BC - Okay, you can't talk me out of it but I'm going to try something new with my hair. My DH has been dying my hair red for awhile now but this next week we're going to try blonde. This is an attempt that will follow up in 4 weeks with red again in hopes that my hair will take a lighter shade of red instead of the dark one that it has over my brown hair. This might be a recipe for disaster but we're going to try it anyways. You did great with something new so I'm hoping we're on a roll here.

Barb - I was with my brother visiting with his wife's family. They were an amazing bunch.

word of caution Heather.......Blonde coloring on dark brown hair can lead to flaming orange. I think the usual "do it yourself " recommendation is to only go a couple of steps away from your natural color. You might want to check with someplace like Sally's, (a beauty supply operation) for help in selecting products and techniques before you get too drastic.
