Judy - We must have posted close to the same time because for the life of me I don't remember seeing your post. Spooky - lol.

I like Barb's comment. My DH is pretty good at fixing things too. Ya know *blushing* I really think that a Mr. Fix It kind of guy is sexy quality.

Just a fast swipe at the Board to let you know I'm alive and well on Friday morning. I'm off to the office early. Dh appears to be fending for himself pretty well.

    Good morning!

I did go to the doctor yesterday. Sinus infection, as usual. She gave me some sample meds for that and my BIG pain pills! She also drew some blood for a liver and kidney check. This is just to get a baseline, as recommended by the hip doctor when I started taking diclofenac (sp?). My back and hip are much better now but I still have a fever with the sinus infection. Staying home today. Back to bed for me -- I'll be back later to respond. XXOO

Morning gang! I'm going to make an irresponsible decision today. Back has been okay the last few days so I'm going to wait another week or so. Why? Because we have an Asian theme at our house (which DH wanted) and we found the best looking 'fake' Bonsai tree at Wal-mart yesterday THEN I saw two beautiful shirts I don't think I can live without. They are long sleeve spring shirts and since I don't like my arms being seen I tend to suffer with more fall shirts. Since I got paid today that is where all my money is going. Feel naughty but will have a weekend feeling pretty and having a new item to our collection. Works out good since the little gal accidentally broke the statue in it's place.

Barb - have a good day. Sounds like things are progressing well with DH.
Shelley - I'll have to let my DH know it's Friday the 13th. He's convinced that he doesn't have bad luck on this day. Full moon and we could win the lottery maybe!

Alida - Yuck! A sinus infection. I feel for you and glad you have some medicine to get rid of that painful annoying illness. Pray that you get plenty of rest to regroup soon.

Fly-by for me, too, but will check in later

    Waves to all!
Alida, hope you can get some comfort from your snuggle at home today. That's got to help the sinus infection, too. Got the big meds? GOOD.

Heather, you've got to be a girl sometimes. Bet you'll look great in those shirts.

Barb and Shell, have a good day (even tho it's a work day)

    Everyone else, hugs.....

Errands today, workout and a trek to the bank. Stupid bank's ATM took a deposit nicely yesterday evening, then put up a message that it couldn't take deposits. Nope, didn't show up on the little slip, either.

On a nice note, we bought dh a couple of pr of jeans last night, not only a size smaller, but of the "regular" rather than "wide load" variety He doesn't know how much he's lost (or won't tell me) but he looks great. (Now if he'd only exercise even the tiniest bit, but alas...) The guys do have their vanity, though...he's eating up my compliments, which are all true anyway.

Quick swipe for me too. I'm off to my Spanish class. Dh is fixing bkfst (bacon and eggs) and I will need to get ready. Yesterday with our friends was just spectacular. We have known them for so many years that our conversation immediately turns deep. So satisfying. They live in an ofh in a City near here. It, too, is for retired ministers and missionaries. One of their residents, a retired College and seminary professor lectured on the Holy Spirit yesterday afternoon. It was wonderfully academic and refreshing. We loved it. I ate waaaay to much, most of it sweets. Today I feel pretty sloooooow! We got there about 12:15 and had a big meal, and stayed until 8:00 pm. Lots of good conversation, catching up and stuff.

Today I am coordinating the arrival of our appliances at the ofh, and trying to find a way to get the sink there. It arrives at our dd's out in the desert (where she lives and has her studio.)

Talked to my dd yesterday and the contract is being signed, probably today for her new job. It pays so wonderfully! I am so glad for her. We had an interesting conversation about her ds (my gds). He plays Little League, and is their star player, pitcher. He often feels as though the entire game is on his shoulders. The Coach TELLS him that! Dd is struggling with the whole competitive thing that happens with boys and organized sports. Also, dgs fell apart on the field and collapsed in tears a few weeks ago. The Coach won't let him forget that "boys don't cry!" Dd is livid about that. Coach's wife counseled dd that she should tell dgs that he can cry at home, but not in public. What do you think?? We do live in a competitive culture. Men do need to be able to compete. That's just the way it is right now. It would be wonderful to change that, but at what price? When he gets to Jr. High, next year, they will crucify him if he cries in public. He is a handsome, well-adjusted, fabulous athlete. I just don't know. Let's discuss this. Consider this my 3x5 card for the weekend.

    Peace, Peg

Well, here I sit, not on my way to Dallas......... yet. We are supposed to get what Peg calls "big weather" this evening. It's in DD's area right now and if I had left after school as planned, I would have had to drive through it. On top of that, wimpy wimpy Lexie dog would probably have had a heart attack at the vet's. She is terrified of unexpected noises -- heck, terrified of big noise of any kind. I just couldn?t subject her to that. The thunder, lightening, and rain/hail should be here in about 3 hours and is supposed to last in some form or the other until morning. We are already under a tornado watch. So, I'm waiting until it clears out sometime tomorrow morning to go retrieve DH.

Consider this my 3x5 card for the weekend.
Peg, I cracked up when I read that line. Your cards were great.

OK, back to the subject of the card..............
I can't remember exactly how old DGS is. I'm guessing that he is about 13. That is definitely an age where peer pressure and bullying start. In DGS's favor is that he has athletic skill and is good looking. That will go a long way to protect him from some issues. But, if he is easily stressed, the evil little bullies will definitely pick up on it. In my opinion, someone needs to remind the coach that these are just kids. No one should be putting the weight of the whole game on his shoulders. This guy is not encouraging him to play better, but is setting him up to quit competitive sports altogether. Your DD might consider letting the coach know that her DS would perform much better with positive encouragement. There are good and bad little league coaches just as there are good and bad teachers and workers in all areas. Sounds like this guy is on a testosterone high. Tell her that she is not out of line in asking him to dial it back some --- both for DGS's sake and for the sake of others.

When DS was a high school sophomore playing JV football the principal on my campus gave me a yellowed clipping of a poem titled something like "He's just a boy." I've searched for it and can't find it. Below is something very similar.

    STANDING ALONE
    He stands at the plate
    with his heart beating fast.
    The bases are loaded
    the dye has been cast.

Mom and Dad cannot help him
    he stands all alone.
    A hit at this moment
    would bring the boys home.

    The ball nears the plate
    he swings hard but misses.
There's a groan from the crowd,
with some boo's and some hisses.

    A thoughtless voice cries out,
    "Strike out the bum!"
    Tears fill the boy's eyes,
    the game's no longer fun.

    Parents and spectators
    with faces of stone;
    Remember, he's just a boy
    who's standing alone.

    Please open your heart
    and give him a break.
    For it's moments like this,
a great man you can make.

    So keep this in mind,
    if you hear someone forget.
    He's just a small boy
    and not a man yet.

My DH is going to be professor snape (from Harry Potter) in June for the midnight release party at the video store he works for. He bought a size large costume when he is an XL. Called him at work today, where it's been delivered, and he sounded really bummed. After being together this long I just knew it was because he tried it on and it didn't fit. Didn't want to tell him to buy a size larger because he would have had his feeling hurt and he would have argued with me. This will be good motivation for my DH to eat better. Should be able to get DH down a size by June. Men's metabolisms are amazing.

    -----------------------

BC - That is great news about your DH. Hoping soon that my DH will want to jump on the healthy eating train soon. It's a good ride.

Peg - That really ticks me off how they are treating your dgs. What about having fun? What good is Little League if you can't enjoy yourself? Now he is being ridiculed for breaking down because he obviously can't talk his feelings with this grown child. I just can't believe this and that wife of his! It's good to hear that your son actually has feelings so that he doesn't grow up to be insensitive like her husband. With that said, I realize what I said may not sound Christian but to me it's truth. Oooooh, I have two boys and I'm red with anger. Life is to short to make things like little league so stressful. *Scream* Judy is right. Someone needs to talk with him letting him know encouragement will make a better player out of dgs.

Judy - That poem was not nice because it put tears in my eyes. Just kidding of course. // Hope everything turns out and that tornado doesn't hit any houses. Let us know, okay?

Ohmigosh, Judy! I don't know where you found that! It is just perfect. The only thing better would be something written from the perspective of the pitcher on the little boy's team. But, dgs, has also been the batter. Thanks so much. I can't wait to relay it to dd along with your answer. Thanks again. (By the way, he's 11, almost 12.)

So, where'all the rest o' ya?? Good to see you, Heather. I had a good Spanish class this morning. Then, off to the ofh to take measurements for the appliances. TG it looks as though they are going to fit!

Got an email from the official in charge of my going to the church this summer. It was inviting those reading to call me for an interview. We'll see if it pans out. I'm pretty certain it will.

Gotta go and do the dishes. I'm still full from last night!

    Peace, Peg

Weather blurb just now...very severe storms/tornado in Ft Worth area, and moved on into the Dallas area as well.
Looks to be moving into eastern Texas at this time.
Ms Texas, hunker down...and I hope everyone's families in Dallas are ok and weathered the storm with no damage.

We've had torrential rains on and off all day; now the temp has dropped into the 30's and we may have some snow in the metro area tonight. Crazzzzy weather!

I'll try and ~visit~ tomorrow. I'm exhausted brain wise and body wise.

    Good morning!

Awoke to a tad of the white stuff on the grass. Thunder boomers last night. But I took my big meds and was safely in bed. Feel better this morning!

Peg, not having children, I am not the person to answer your 3x5 card question. But I do have an opinion! Sports at that age should be fun. Sports at that age is a learning experience -- how to win and how to lose. The coach should be shot, along with his wife. Isn't coaching Little League a volunteer position? So what you end up with sometimes is a testosterone-laden father who is nuts about baseball. And that doesn't necessarily make him a GOOD coach, just someone who is free and volunteered ....

Judy, your poem was spot-on. I hope you dodged the bad weather that was heading your way. Are you on your way to Dallas now?

Brenda, ACK on the ATM. I avoid those things with a passion. They are supposed to be a convenience ... not make more work for you. Great news on DH losing a few pounds! LOL ... "wide load!"

Barb, so Larry is fending "quite well?" That's great news! Is he cooperating with the physical therapists?

Donna, that's so funny that you like Yao Man. We do, too! I don't think he will make it to the end, though. I'm not sure if he can handle the endurance challenges they always have.

Everyone ... have a good weekend!

Good morning everyone. Saturday at last. The cold, cold rain continues, but no snow on the ground yet. I plan to get to the gym this morning for my two classes--weights, and step. 'Bout time I got my act together again.

DH continues to languish, and I don't see much improvement in his strength or other signs. It's very hard to just stand by, but the other thing (hovering and badgering) wasn't working at all.

Judy, wise indeed to hold back on the long drive. The poem is pointed, but I wonder if a coach like that cares about the sentiment? Just for the record,
    the dye has been cast.
That should be "die"--as in the singular of "dice." This is probably one of those phrases that will segue into a whole new meaning, something about changing colors! People don't want to see the word "die" in a poem about little boys.

Last night at Costco, I bought the DVD of that controversial movie Borat. It was supposed to be extremely rude and crude--and hysterically funny, which I thought might qualify as "humor therapy." Well, it was rude and crude, and funny in spots. DH watched it with me, and declared it the stupidest movie he ever saw. The part where Borat hitches a ride in a camper van with a bunch of drunken fraternity boys from the U. of South Carolina reminded me why I fled the state as fast as I could after college. Looks like the social mores of college-age boys in that state (and probably some other states, too) haven't changed a whisker in forty years. I don't find that humorous. And the mockery of Pentecostals was much more egregious than the mockery of Jews. In short, watch this at your own risk. Overall, the unwitting players in this film--regular Americans roped in by a hoax--had their hearts in the right place. I was actually amazed at the tolerance and courtesy shown to the phony "journalist."

I hear the newspaper plopping on the front walk. Everybody stick close to home if the weather's crummy. Read a good book. Play with the kids. Make a page for the scrapbook. Hey--clean a closet! Have whatever kind of day makes you feel good. I'll do the same.

    P. S. Hi, Alida. Simo-posting. Get well soon! By the way, there's not really a contradiction between "quite well" and "languishing." Small degrees of activity--for him--are interpreted as positive signs--by me. But it's not my idea of an enthusiastic attempt at recuperation.

Busy day ahead of us. Got the results of my Easter weekend indulgences - 2 pound gain. I'm actually thrilled because I've done worse. 14 weeks left and only 9 pounds to lose to get my 1/4 money back from the weight loss program. How great is that kind of motivation? Figure that equals about .64 pounds a week to lose but am working for 1 pound loss each week. Will stay positive which I've seen equals good results. When I'm down on myself I give up. Have to be my friend first.

Waiting for the grandparents to call us so we can surprise ds with a new bike. So excited!! We have an attachment on the back of my bike so we can ride together (bicycle built for two). He is getting to big and I'm hoping we can adjust it for my 3 year old. He has such short legs but at least we can get an idea how long it will be before he can join us on our rides. I'll look for a bike seat at garage sales or just give in and buy one. Having kids is always a good excuse to be a kid too.

    Hi Gang!

I'm here and posting. Even though it is 10:00 am, I am still in my jammies and feeling kind of out of it. I have a lot that I could do today, but nothing that I have to do. Dh is off with the car until some time early afternoon. He, of course, has been up since the wee hours and has his day all planned out. I do like this kind of a day. Nothing on the agenda.

Bren: You'll appreciate this: As I look up over the school yard, there is a woman with two beautiful Collies, running them on the grass. They are absolutely delighted to have the freedom and are running joyfully around her and the open grass. She is also grooming them. She just finished brushing one of them and I can see (from 100 yards away) a big pile of white fur on the grass. She keeps catching the other one and brushing him. He keeps escaping and running around. She has left her car on the driveway of the school (no traffic today), with the door open. Every once in a while one of the dogs will run pell mell to the car and look at her, quite clearly telling her that he is ready to go home. The owner, walks along, calmly brushing hair off of herself. Quite a wonderful show for the morning. Well, now she has loaded them in the car and is picking up the piles of hair left on the grass. Quite a thoughtful owner, I do say.

Barb: I can only imagine how rough it is for you to see dh languishing. As you know, our positions are reversed in my house. I fear, as we all do, having to spend time recuperating from something. At least I have learned that "moving" is absolutely primary in recuperation. So hard, though, for someone who finds their best time on the couch! Alone, in my case. I imagine, too, that for him, the rituals around drinking are beginning to plague him now. (When I gave up smoking back in the day, it was those rituals that were so very hard to live with)

Alida: Yeah, I hope that this can be a day of rest for you. Sounds as though you need it. I am not sure if I told you that I have been taking Diclofenac for a number of years. I'm so glad that it works for you. It keeps most of the pain at bay for me, but in the late afternoon, pain does begin to sneak up on me and I, most days, need some BIG drugs to get through the evening. It's not so much that I need them to move. The pain begins to throb then. No matter what I do, or don't do, I hurt. Getting old is not for sissies!

Nita: Whatcha been doin' this week? Been missing you.

Shel: Stay out of the big weather. The TV has been warning about a big nor'easter building through your area to hit the East coast. Oh, I feel so sorry for all of you. Honestly!! I am not so far away from that whole thing that i don't remember what it was like to wish and hope for spring and live again, through APRIL for pete's sake, with snow and freezing temperatures. The year before I graduated from seminary, I stayed for the graduation day because I had so many friends graduating. On May 7th, it snowed in Rochester, NY! Honestly, I could have just hit the wall I was so spittin' mad!

Donna: Good to hear from you. I've been wondering how its going for you.

Judy: As i said, I loved the poem. But, let's get into this further. Both to you and for the rest of you. What DOES the mother of a son do? I mean, not about that stupid Little League coach, but about the bigger issue? How do you continue to teach your son to be a sensitive male, and still enable him to get along in the culture that recognizes the handsome, athletic, competitive, bullying, boys? Of course the culture should change. That's a given. But, just as we live in a culture where women have a role and role responsibilities (though many of us step out of that mold: How many of US do all the cooking, cleaning, washing, etc.), we also live in a culture where the "men" are expected to compete for the jobs, position, and "place" in their family, job, and life. I know that I am painting with a broad brush. I know that there are MANY exceptions. But, I want us to get into how we raise our sons given the mores of our culture. (Well, I just spent 30 minutes searching Firefox add-ons to find a way to put an accent mark above the "e" in "mores" but had no luck) I want to post this before it "goes away"

Hello to you all, especially Rach and Terry.

    Peace, Peg
