Late-breaking news: Just in case this makes the national headlines, I wanted everyone to know that I was NOT at the Ward Parkway Mall in Kansas City this afternoon, where a random shooting (and two deaths) have been reported (so far). This is my neighborhood mall, and I had intended to be there--for pet food, and Target, and the sports shoestore. I decided to do the laundry instead.

This is terribly sad for my neighborhood--not to mention the rest of the universe. I'll let you know what happened when I read it in the papers tomorrow.

Barb,
Thank the Lord, you were not at that mall. My goodness...I just checked msn news and they say now a total of 4 people are dead and 3 more wounded.
Very sad indeed.

DH and I took DGS to the OU vs KU baseball game today since our little guy is baseball crazy...LOL. The PR team came to us and asked if DGS would like to be the guest announcer for the 4th inning and introduce the OU players as they came to bat. Of course DGS said yes. When the time came, DGS marched right down to the dug out and did a fine job of announcing the players He was on cloud-9 for sure!
KU skunked us though...9 to 4. Oh well...such is the game of baseball.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Sorry I can't visit with everyone. Got to get DGS clothes washed and packed and ready for his trip home tomorrow :(

(((hugs to all)))

Oh Barb, thank goodness you followed your inner voice and didn't go to the mall! Funny how we get those instincts that tell us not to do things. When I was in college I turned down an invitation to a great party to stay at the dorm and pack to move the next day. The BIG tornado came through Lubbock that night and wiped out a large portion of the city. It started across the street from where I was and totally took out the apartments where I would have been.

Shelley, Way cool for DGS. He'll remember that forever. Way to make a great memory.

Berta, Is you DH's surgery this week? We are sending you prayers and good wishes.

Alida, did you get the printing done? That will wear out a printer fast.

Donna, we didn't hear from you this weekend. I hope you had a great ball game and team party to keep you busy.

Everyone else.........
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Check this out ..... I actually did some sewing today. I took up DD's black lace skirt so that I can wear it to the country club on Thursday. And, since I had black thread on the machine, I altered a pair of black pants, too. It was nice to finally get something accomplished.
Hi guys...we're back from a busy weekend. Dh played 3 games yesterday and one today. They didn't win any but had fun. They sure look good in their new uniforms too. But, they only ordered shirts and everyone showed up with all different coloured pants. So, on the way home we stopped to get new sweats for him. Of course, with his short legs they were too long so I was up late last night shortening his pants. It was worth it though when we got to the field today to see that all the other guys had the same idea and bought new sweats too.
The weather was not too bad this weekend. A little cool yesterday but sunny. I ended up with a little sunburn....on one hand only. Crazy. Dh has windburn on his face.
We took the Crocks over to my mother in law and she chose the ones she wants. Now I just have to remember to pay for them tomorrow. My friend on the team wants the other pair but in another colour so I'll change them tomorrow and give them to her on Wednesday when we have our next game.
It was soooo good to get away this weekend and just forget about everything that's been going on around here. Being with other women and just yakking with a little bit of gossip thrown in has done me a world of good. Like you Shelley, I don't have any friends in this town. If you weren't born here ....you're not included in anything.
Barb: Wish there was something that I could think of that would make your dh eat. I really thought the idea of having a feeding tube would throw a scare in him and make him eat. Is he able to cook for himself...maybe he needs to be able to do some of the things he used to ...like the cooking.
I've sooo glad that you didn't go to the mall too. Those inner voices know what they are talking about.
Shelley: What a wonderful weekend you've had. Like your dgs I was an avid ready too....Bobbsie Twin books were what I read as a child. I still read just about anything I can get my hands on. A hardcover book has always felt real special to me.
Alida: Get all that copying done? Too bad you had to do it on your day off.
Judy; We didn't get to go to the team dinner. We had to leave the dogs home alone seeing as they aren't allowed in the park so we had to get home to them. The rest of the team had a potluck dinner and they say it went well. That's okay...there will be more of them starting with a camping weekend the long weekend in May.
Well guys I've got to get ready for bed. Sooooo much fresh air this weekend and I'm pooped. Early to bed for me tonight. Talk to you all tomorrow.
The morning headlines are all about the mall shooting. I've even heard from an online friend in Japan who heard the news. The whole world must think Americans are all crazies with guns in both hands all the time. (Don't get me started on the gun thing.)
While all that was going on, I joined a group from my church at the university down the street from the church. We cooked burgers and hotdogs, and served up mountains of baked goodies, for the college students, who are headed into Finals week. We were in the courtyard at one of the dorms, and about 250 kids showed up--all very appreciative of the free food. I ate two hotdogs (no bun), plus a couple of slices of nasty "American cheese", and nibbled enough crumbs to add up to at least one brownie. That put a pound on the scales this morning. Sugar and salt. Enemies #1 and #2.
Donna, I wish there were an answer other than patience to dh's recuperation. Thanks for your good thoughts. I'm glad you had a great time at the ballgame.
Speaking of ballgames, Shelley, that was a memory-maker for your dgs. Did you get a picture or two?
As for escapes from disaster--does anyone remember the terrible balcony collapse at the Hyatt Hotel in KC about 25 years ago? Dh and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary that day, and I'd ESPECIALLY requested to go to that dance. Unfortunately, dh had a stomachache in the morning, and apologized profusely for making me miss our big night out. So...we weren't there. We didn't even know about it until my bf called our home--frantic that we might have been involved. We also survived the direct hit of Hurricane Hugo during one of our beach trips. So, I'd say we have plenty to be grateful for.
Whatever you do, hug somebody today. Consider yourself hugged by me! {{{{{hug}}}}}
Good Monday Morning!
As the sun rises and sets, it's Monday again.
Barb - Whew! on you deciding not to go to Ward Parkway yesterday. When Bob told me about it I was shocked. Right here in the neighborhood. I missed the news last night, but I'll catch it in the paper today. That mall is where my audiologist is -- where I got my hearing aids. I did think of you when I heard about it. I figured it was "your mall."
Donna, you had a busy weekend! Too bad the guys didn't win at least one game! I'll bet the get-together with the other women was just plain fun. We all need that every now and then.
Judy, printing cheaper at Kinko's? Maybe. But at least I get PAID while I am doing the printing! Plus, the boss bought the ink. I did run out of ink, with about 50 more copies to do. I did learn how to adjust my printer, though ... a valuable lesson. Sometimes, when I would print on glossy stock, the ink was just too heavy. I found out how to vary the amount of ink used, and how to do other stuff too. Duh. I've only had this printer for about five years!
OMG about listening to your "inner voice" when you were in college! I do hope all your friends who did go to the party were OK ....
Shelley, WAY COOL for DGS! That experience will be with him for the rest of his life! He leaves today? That was a short trip. But I know you loved every minute of it!
Berta, prayers being sent your way for your husband's operation tomorrow. Did you decide what to wear to the reunion yet?
Off to start my day. Once this trade show is over, I am going to give some serious thought to going back to my back doctor. For some reason I cannot remember what he told me about what should be done for this problem. I know Teel mentioned her husband has a bulging disc and he does exercises. TEEL, if you are reading this, send me a PM, OK? Or, I'll send you an e-mail. This is getting real old.
Have a good day, one and all. XXOO
Barb, I just read your post about the Hyatt. Oh. My. God. I can just imagine the feeling you must have had when you heard about it. Our son Mark was going to go to that tea dance, too, but he changed his plans. Life is full of "But by the Grace of God" stories.
Good morning everyone!! We'll be walking ds to school this morning. Little "M" will be in the stroller to keep her from wondering. Charlie is now behaved enough that he can walk thankfully. We have so much fun on our walks and call them our adventures.
We got a Nintendo Wii yesterday!! All four of us here had a great time playing golf, bowling, boxing and tennis. This next week I want to buy a more active game for us and another remote. You can play up to 4 people so will eventually have DH, the boys and me playing away. For the players you make your own. We made some little Wii people that look like each one of us a bit. We shrunk down Charlie with curly red hair, gave Jay glasses and made DH pretty tall, bald and a grumpy look on his face which is his usual expression - lol. I had red long hair and wore pink my favorite. Even picked out my eye brows that I have - lol. Anyway, if I'm not here often you'll know why.
Alida - I noticed you mentioned a good nights rest because you didn't drink enough water. It seems like no matter what time I drink my last glass at I run to the potty a few times a night. Good thing I'm a house wife and can schedule in a nap with the kids. I was fine before my last child. Wonder if that 10 pound baby flattened my bladder so I have to go more often, ha ha. // You sure sound busy getting together all those goodie bags. Really am hoping you have a successful show.
Barb - (((Hugs))) I can only imagine how you must be feeling right now. Your DH must be relieved you stayed home as well. What would he do without you?
Shelley - Sounds like you had a great weekend with your dgs. It's nice to hear that he likes to read! Smart, nice and a lover of learning. Good kids like your dgs seem pretty rare anymore.
Judy - Oooh a country club. I bet it is fun going to a nice place like that having a great reason and excuse to dress up.
Donna - You must be pretty fair skinned too? The weather is a 64 degree high but clear so we'll be putting the sunscreen on. // Good thing your DH has you for a seemstress. My mom just gave me a sewing machine that she got from a friends family after she passed away. I used it last Friday so sew pockets that wouldn't stay ironed down and it looks great now! Then the machine started acting up and mom and I couldn't figure it out. It's here at home now and I'll mess around with it, searching the internet for ideas, seeing if I can figure it out. If not it was free and mom said to toss it.
per my journal entry today....
Quote:
Just got back from taking DD and DGS to the airport inTulsa. :(
We ran into some very hard rain, and came up on a pretty bad wreck. A car was on it's roof. Just as we got there, and I was calling in the wreck, we saw some folks walking the *victim* off to the side of the road. He was one lucky dude. It was a raining so hard, we could hardly see the guy, but they put him in a car that had stopped. The wrecked car was almost blocking both lanes, but enough room for cars to get by. Sitting there right in the middle of the interstate with torrential rain makes one feel like a sitting duck. DH kept saying he hoped we didn't get *rear ended*. Finally, the traffic started moving...slowly, but moving.
Thankfully, home safe.
I have to work tomorrow...wasn't planning on it, but they left a message on my machine...ack!
(((hugs to all)))
Heather, check to see that the machine is threaded correctly --- both top and bottom. sometimes, something as simple as having the bobbin in upside down can mess up everything. My next suggestion is to make sure that lint hasn't collected i the tension dials. Use some canned air like that used to clean out computers to blow it out. If the machine is a good brand, it might be worth having someone check it over. Do you have a brand and model #?
Shelley - Glad to hear that you got through that okay.
Judy - Thanks so much for helping me out. I'll get the model # first thing in the morning. It's in the closet right now and after 21,000 steps on my pedometer and still upper weight training to do I'm pretty tired. I believe it was threaded correctly because it was working fine and my mother and I had just checked it. Midway through it just wouldn't cooperate. It's very old and was sitting on the ladies porch so canned air is an excellent idea. I'm so glad I posted about the machine because I would love for it to be an easy fix especially since the machine was free.
Heather, that is a good machine......... Unless it was totally abused, it is worth taking in for service and worth much more than trash. From what I found , it appears to be a workhorse that is capable of sewing on heavyweight items --- like hemming your boys' jeans, etc. I am guessing that it is about 25 years old. (My Bernina looks very similar.) Don't think that it is junk just because it is not one of the new computerized machines. You are going to have to trust me that I have considerable experience sewing and with different machines. If you dump that, someone will have a great find. It is worth the price of a service fee.
