HI guys!
I'm taking a little break from cleaning. So far I've got the dusting and vacuuming done, and all the bathrooms cleaned. Oye! Next I need to sort out some old magazines and catalogs and maybe tackle the tupperware cabinet...ack!

Anyhoo...
Alida...have a good week. Hope you get to drop in afterwhile. Bet this is a busy time of year for window service, eh?

Barb...glad you enjoyed your potluck yesterday. Trader Vics, eh? Shoot, I'd be happy with a Trader Joes! Our choices for grocery shopping are VERY limited in OOOOklahoma, thanks to Walmart. And I don't mean that in a good way, either. :(
Continued prayers and well wishes for you and Larry.

Bren...What's on your agenda today? Has springtime landed in your neck of the woods yet? Hope you're getting some of this delightful spring weather.

Heather...glad you are feeling a bit better. If I were you though, I still wouldn't really over do it especially with the exercise. Yoga will be there when you are well, kiddo! Take care of yourself!

Peg...ouch! The foot injury sounds awful! Can you walk on it? If you aren't going to go get it checked out, you might want to put an ice pack on it, and for sure elevate your foot. While I was in Denver, my GF and I went to several Chicos. I found a cute top, but decided to wait until I drop a few more pounds...Incentive, yanno!
Your new togs sound lovely!

Judy...a 4 day work week, this week eh? wOOt!!! How did DD's move go? Hopefully it wasn't pouring rain.

Donna...wow...you had a busy weekend. Glad to hear your DD has found some new church friends. Is she still on the rehab list?
You'll absolutely love having a mp3 player; it's waaay better than a cd player or a radio, IMO. I have over 200 songs downloaded on mine, and I'm not near finished...LOL!

Nita, Bert, Teel, Rach...hope you all are well.

Off to hunt for lunch...LOL. DH and I went on our dinner date last night, and I have some leftover steak from Outback, so I'm pretty sure that will be lunch with a tossed salad...LOVE that beef, yanno!

Have a good week everyone!
Prolly back later...
(((hugs)))

It took me a while to get caught up with everyone.

Barb, it's good to hear that your hubby is improving. And that you've had some time away from him, enjoying your friends' company.

Bert, great news that your husband can have his knee surgery. He'll feel so much better when the pain is gone. Constant pain can wreak havoc with the rest of our body.

Alida, my sister-in-law had a hip replaced, and she felt so much better afterward. Her recovery wasn't remarkable, but it wasn't long and protracted, either. She was in her mid 60s, I believe, at the time. They had her up and walking just a few hours after she was out of recovery.

Shelley, I'm happy you didn't get blown away. All we got was much-needed rain, and even some of that bypassed us.

Peg, your outfits sound so summery and totally appropriate for your cruise. I'll bet your husband looks spiffy in his new suit. My husband bought 3 new suits last spring, and he gets all kinds of compliments on one in particular. It's kind of a butterscotch color, a 4-button suit, and he really looks good in it. He's one of those men who really likes to dress up, even if he does complain about having to wear a tie! He has a whole drawer of clip-ons because he hates to wear a regular tie. Once in a while he'll pull out one of the ties he had to wear in his dance recital (he's in his 3rd year of taking tap lessons), one is lavendar, one is sort of a neon yellow. I like them both.

Heather, I'm glad you got some help from your doctor. Not all doctors are out to make the big bucks; some actually have empathy, and really want to help out those who just can't afford to go every time they sneeze. There were many times I didn't go to the doctor because we just did not have the money for it, so I know exactly what you're going through. Now, get out the chicken soup, drink lots of water, and get better!

Donna, I'm so sorry about what you are going through with your daughter. I just cannot imagine what it's like, but my heart goes out to you. Perhaps if she can get her depression under control, the desire for the alcohol will diminish. People often self-medicate with alcohol, since they don't know what else to do. Me, I self-medicate with food. It's cheaper than alcohol. Besides, one drink puts me to sleep!

Brenda, Judy, etc, etc, hope you are having a good Monday.

My right hip has been really bothering me. I have arthritis in both hips, but the left side is usually the worst one. Lately I can't lay on my left side without the right hip aching, and last night it hurt no matter what side, left, right, front, back, that I was on. So, I raised the head and foot of the bed a bit (thank goodness for our adjustable bed!), and that eased it enough to sleep. Must be the weather. We have a slight chance of rain. I just need to get to my chiropractor, but it's 50 miles away, and I need the time to do it. We have 2 chiropractors in town, but one just works on what you say hurts, the other charges for everytime he touches you. The ones I go to give you a thorough going over, top to bottom, including your neck, and charge just $35.00. And they get you fixed the first time, and don't make you keep coming back, like one of the local ones do. It's worth it to pay for the gas for the trip up and back; besides, if I time it right, I can make a quick visit in to see my son & family, and give Jade a big hug.

Jade has had some dental work, has to wear an expander, and she's just miserable now. She's not eating well at all, and that's not good for a 6-year old. I guess I need to call her, or send her an e-mail. She loves Monk-Emails. Might have to do that for her.

My husband's sister spent about 6 weeks in the hospital. She has COPD really bad, and they had her in rehab for a time. She's home now, but her husband is going to the doctor today for a biopsy. They found a mass on his lung. Right now we're waiting to hear the verdict. We're hoping it's not terrible news, but won't be surprised if it is. They both smoked heavily for many years. In fact, when my sister-in-law was 17, the doctor recommended she start smoking for her nerves. That was in the early 50s, before the knowledge about cancer and smoking was published. She doesn't have cancer, but has to have oxygen available 24-7. At least she doesn't smoke anymore. She quit that a few years ago, but it was too late to stop the damage. So, looks like we might have to make a trip to see them in a few weeks. It's about a 6 hour drive. Not looking forward to it. It's pretty down there, but humid.

All of you have a wonderful Monday - well, as wonderful as a Monday can be. I'm looking forward to a short week, we get Friday off! Hooray!

Peg, sorry I didn't mention your poor foot and arm! Take care and get them all healed!

Thanks, Nurse Shelley! I was hoping you would check in and comment. We gave some thought to going to the ER last night, but the thought of waiting HOURS to be seen for a cut that I know isn't deep, and a possible break that can only heal with time seemed like the last choice! So, I did ice and elevate right after it happened. Do you think that ice will still do some good today too?? I'll do it if you think so. I can walk on it, just limping a very little. It really isn't too sore, just puffy and terribly bruised (Up my big toe and all the way to my ankle on the foot!). I can move my toes without pain, so it seems as though it isn't a break. I haven't tried to put on shoes. The cut is right where my sandals strap goes. And, I sure as heck am not going to put on tennies again!

Peace, Peg

Morning ladies...nice to see so many posts this morning.

Barb: Yes, there is an Al-Anon group here but I've been procrastinating about going. When I was with my ex husband I went to try and support him and had a terrible experience with them. They basically all jumped on me and told me it was my fault that he drank and to get used to it. Never went back. I know that all groups aren't the same....just have to get my nerve up. I'm not really a joiner, ya know?

Shelley: Yes, dd is still on the list for rehab. Sure is taking a long time isn't it? She goes back to the dr. today so he can see her again and make sure she is making a little prgress compared to last week. He's also setting up appointment with the mental health worker (she had told me the worker was on holidays and that's why she didn't have to go....total lie)

Peg: Your new clothes sound so nice. I wish I could wear skirts. The ones that are out now that are so soft looking and flowing are gorgeous. I'm just not a skirt person, but I love the look of them. You're really gonna look and feel great on the cruise.

Sorry about the sore foot...ouch! I'd have said a few choice words if that happened to me.

Nita: Been there with going to a crappy chiropractor. We don't have one that stays in this town but there was one that came in once a week and set up in a local motel room. I get bad headaches so I went to him. Once a week for 2 years and it did nothing. He told me it would take time. I'm sure all he wanted was the $25 a week! He didn't even had the proper bed to adjust you on. I'm thinking I need to get to town and get myself re-aligned...and pretty soon too.

Heather: Good to see you feeling better. Just don't push it, okay?

Time for lunch now...maybe I'll be back later.

Peg,
Well, an ice pack and elevating sure wouldn't hurt anything today. Icing usually helps with the swelling AND the bruising immediately when the trauma occurs, so today it would only be more for comfort, but I'd still ice and elevate for a few days if it were me....just my 2 cents.

(((hugs sweetie)))

Thanks, Shel!

Donna: Maybe those folks who gave you terrible advice in Al-Anon aren't there anymore. It's supposed to give YOU support, not help for your loved one. They get their help from AA. Peace to you, my friend. Glad it was a good weekend. I agree with Heather. There is no better time (in the church year) to change your life than Easter. Maybe that will be the ticket for you dd.

I'm at the hospital, and have called the doctor to be sure I get to see him before the end of the day. I hate waiting, but that's what it's all about, isn't it?

Peg, OUCHIE! Keep that gash clean and protected. And I hope Heather doesn't actually think you used realbutterflies.

Donna, if an Al-Anon group said that, then they've completely missed the point. I wouldn't go back either. I'm unhappy to admit cooperation in abetting the consumption of alcohol, but "my fault"? No way. So sorry you had that experience.

Oh, yeah, Shelley. That would be Trader JOE'S, not Trader Vics. We used to have a Trader Vics in KC--umbrella drinks and all.

Smoking as a cure for nerves?? Oh, those were the "good old days," all right. Hope your in-law gets well.

I've read the entire new issue of OPRAH magazine--except for the article on how to survive possible disasters like a rapist in your bedroom or a falling elevator. Just what I need at the moment.

I'm going to be writing for Christmas next, so put in your orders now for messages you can't ever seem to find at the Hallmark store.

Y'know, Donna, we've thought of that problem--although we haven't quite solved how to title the card. I'll keep an eye out for the right message.

The doc finally arrived at the bedside this afternoon. The three of us got our heads together, and decided that the next thing to do is make arrangements for Larry to come home. As of now, we're shooting for Wednesday. He's a long way from out of the woods, medically speaking, but it's up to his own body to do the healing. So--getting him in a more comfortable environment can only help. I'll be conferring with Social Services tomorrow to make plans. Meanwhile, Larry will be working on eating real food, and getting up and around.

I'll see you in the morning, m'dears.

Barb,
It really sounds like Larry would benefit from a stay in a SNF(skilled nursing facility).(Not to be confused with a long term nursing facility, aka nursing home)
On a SNF unit, they can work with him to get him back to baseline as far as strengthening, ambulating, and other ADLs. The stay can be as short as 3 days or longer, but the object is to transition back to independent living.
Hope your visit with SS tomorrow is productive and has a good outcome for all involved.
I imagine that home health visits may be an option as well.

Sending good vibes and well wishes to KC!

A kiss and a promise from me today. The weather has been good today, but is supposed to return to the 20's 30's and 40's for the next week......SO I've been outside clearing beds and trying to figure out what to do on the hot, dry west side of the house, where last fall I deliberately killed some horrid ground covers that took over and weren't at all attractive. There's a pagoda dogwood left, repeating daylillies, autumn joy, and perhaps a spot or two of native prairie plants--coriopsis, indian blanketflower. Has to be hardy stuff to survive there.

Sorry to miss chat today--there are more serious issues among us than usual. A workout planned tomorrow, finish the rest of the housework, and then I'm all yours, LOL.

Barb, I echo Shelley's suggestion. On more than one occasion we took my dad straight home from the hospital and did not transition through a SNF. DH had to go stay with him for a week each time. We also had therapists and assistants that came every day or so to help. It was rough on both DH and DDad. He could have and should have had the more concentrated physical therapy and care of a facility. We were reluctant to go that route because he was sure we were sending him to a "nursing home." After his last stay in the hospital (which was 10 days to 2 weeks), we didn't have a choice. He had to go to skilled nursing. We could not provide the 24 hour care he needed for 6+ weeks. He was so weak at that point that he couldn't even feed himself. They did an amazing job of getting him ambulatory again. For as long as Larry has been down, it's going to take a considerable amount of time and therapy to get him up and functioning again. Listen closely when social services talks about skilled nursing. It sounds to me like he is a prime candidate.

Thanks, my friends, for your suggestions about SNF. I'm going to talk to Social Services today, and I HOPE they will be helpful. Larry needs to get out of the hospital, but as of yesterday, I'm less optimistic than the doctor about his/my ability to take care of basic needs. I can do 24/7 for a few days, but not for weeks. Unfortunately, the "hospital-ish" environment has been terribly debilitating for him, and I'm not sure SNF would feel like much of an improvement. If I bring him home for a few days, I can always transfer him wherever else he needs to go. We'll see.

My mail server seems to be on the fritz this morning, which feels like having my blood circulation cut off. Ack. I'll be at the office later, so I can use my work e-mail--but I hate to wait.

I attended Al-Anon last night. Very good and kind people. I'm withholding any judgments or decisions about that organization until I've attended at least four meetings. Since you know me pretty well, you can imagine that my tendency to say, "Oh, I've got all this covered" is quite strong. But that would be exactly the reason to keep going.

My fried chicken was delicious (although pan-frying is too messy.) All I did to the chicken (skinless, boneless thighs from Costco) was dredge it in mayonnaise and shake it in a bag of crushed BBQ pork rinds. Could have used a little more seasoning, but it was still crispy and tasty. I like cooking, and I don't leave the kitchen looking like the Barbarian Hordes came through.

In fact, these past two weeks (with Scott in and out infrequently) have been the longest period of time I've lived by myself since I can't remember when. I could get to liking it.

We'll see what today holds.

Instant update: Turns out Time/Warner had switched out my IP address from earthlink to roadrunner. Did they bother telling me??? Since earthlink is a T/W partner already, there was no reason for this. A nice man named "Benedict" in India (I guess) was able to restore my earthlink service within ten minutes. For now, this will cost extra (3.95/mo) until I get T/W straightened out. I'm very impressed with earthlink customer service at the moment, and wish to restore my original loyalty.

So...as you were.

Good morning!

I got up early enough to visit here and spend some time with all of you.

Peg, OUCH. I hope the ice and elevation are working for you, sweetie. D*mn wreath, huh? I DID break my big toe when a wine bottle fell on it. Dr. had to take the nail off. That was fun. Do you have any shoes that will work until the swelling goes down?

Your new clothes sound smashing! Actually, they are a good investment. They are two-fers. They will work for Tahiti AND the cruise!

Judy, I was wracking my brain over why you would have a four-day week. DUH. Good Friday. Lucky you!

Brenda, I have a hot west side too. Currently it's empty. It's the whole length of the house and anything I put there is going to cost $$. Day Lillies work though? If you come up with any ideas let me know! The weekend after Easter is when I want to buy some stone edging blocks to circle the huge oak tree in our front yard. Fill with good dirt so what I plant there will have a chance. Tricky. One side of the tree gets the setting west sun. The other side of the tree is shade.

Shelley, has your weather calmed down? Yanno, we are so lucky to have you here! Your advice is always spot-on and welcome! When was it you said your DD may visit? Fingers crossed.

Barb, it is a quandary, isn't it? I know Larry wants to go HOME. But then I think about all the skilled care he can get at a special facility, with their specialized equipment .... all that can get him up and "running" in less time. Perhaps that would be the best option? Especially if Larry knew it was just for X amount of days and then he would be home. I know you will be getting good advice from social services there. (((HUGS)))

Chicken dredged in mayonnaise? I never would have thought of that!

In all this time, I forgot about Scott! How is he doing?

Donna, (((HUGS))). Your daughter going to church is a wonderful step for her to take! How did her visit to the doctor go yesterday? And yes, it does seem to be taking forever to get her into that rehab center.

I remember your talking about your Al-Anon experience. What idiots.

I know how much you are looking forward to being with your baseball friends again! I can't wait to hear about the oohs and ahhs when they see your scrapbook.

OK. I am going to admit it. What's an MP3 player? Like an Ipod?

Nita, prayers heading your way. Sounds like you have a lot on your plate. When does your husband go in for knee surgery?

Does a chiropractor really help with arthritic hips? I've had a few nights where my hips hurt so much I could not get to sleep. But that was after a day of being an idiot with too much activity. Did I read that right? $35.00 for a visit? I certainly would drive 50 miles for that!

Heather, I am glad you are feeling better, but take care! I know it must be hard with the little ones around. The doctor can say "rest" but sometimes that's impossible!

~~~~~~~~~
Today I have an etch job to do. SIGH. It's payroll week and I should not have scheduled an outside job during this week. Payroll can't close until all the route sheets are entered into the computer. And all the route sheets won;t be at the office till today. Then we can close out the month. Yup, the phones are going crazy now. Everyone wants their windows cleaned for Spring/Easter! Oh well. I will look at it as having a quiet day by myself!
