Judy, I'll be praying that Gustav runs out of steam in the Gulf. But hurricanes have a mind of their own. Yesterday while I was putting files in my new cabinet (and trying to throw some out) I ran across the journal I kept during Hurricane Hugo in SC in 1989. We were right in the middle of that one, so I have full respect for those storms.

Last night, I made roasted chicken wings from a recipe I got on some LCE site (maybe this one). Easy and delicious. Rub the wings with butter. Season with anything you like (I used an herb rub). Bake at 450 for 45 minutes. The only problem is that they produce a lot of smoke at that temperature, and the exhaust fan over the stove wasn't up to the task. Good thing the smoke alarm wasn't too nearby.

And speaking of those files...what a trip down memory lane! I tend to be a person who lives into the future, and it's a little stunning to catch a glimpse of the footprints I've left behind. I've been busy.

But today, I'm not going to be busy. I'm going to pretend it's a holiday weekend, just like everyone else's.

I'll peek in on you later!

oh Judy... 150 kids and a hurricane on the way... sounds like the tag line for a disaster movie! Oh no!! LoL! We will all be thinking of you over the next couple of days - UGH!!

Barb, sounds wonderful, the trip down memory lane - I love doing that and frequently find I do it when we are either leaving a post or have just landed in one... wonderful to revisit friends, family, events, etc... nice!

Berta, you never know, in a given moment there might not be a drop - but you are progressing on a path that is a long haul than just a few weeks - I salute you for sticking with it!

Donna, 32 injections!!! UGH! and double UGH!! Reminds me too much of the IVF days - I shudder to remember! I don't envy you this and I especially feel for you having to make that trip for nothing (why don't people listen) - sorry!

Alida, glad they got the bp in control... it's funny how we don't think about some of the counter-effects of things like nicotine gum... and CONGRATS on being smoke-free this long.. that is truely an accomplishment. Do you know that DH followed cognitive behavior therapy (exactly like Dr. Beck's plan) to stop his 3-pack-camel-straights-unfiltered-a-day habit! He said the trick that worked was, every time he felt like a butt, he'd look at his watch and promised himself that if he still wanted one in ten minutes - he'd have it. Of course, he ALWAYS was busy ten minutes later and whenever he looked at his watch again - it was way past ten minutes and if he felt like another one at that moment - he'd have to wait another ten minutes... and that was what it took, days of forgetting to light up ten minutes later. I'm so proud of you! (plus, I'm delighted because it likely means we'll have you around the pool longer than we might have!)

Shelley, sorry about that sad anniversary... glad you've got beyond it and I agree with Barb, tequila lime chicken sounds like a great cure!

Bren, hope you are well, I miss your smiling face and your ever wise and wonderful chats...

hugs to all - I'll ring in on Beck tomorrow when I can...

Good morning!

Peg, CONGRATULATIONS! Losing 9 pounds while on vacation is quite an accomplishment! Maybe you did more walking than you realize?

And Judy, LOL. Your "what's wrong with this picture" comment gave me a big smile. CONGRATULATIONS on 7 pounds gone!!!

I am saying a pray for you and all those living along the gulf coast. I do hope all the weatherman warnings turn out to be more hype than reality. Sometimes that does happen ....

Rachel, wow. Roger smoked three packs of Camel, unfiltered? I have a friend who smoked like that too. But after his mother died of emphysema, he quit cold turkey. I may have quit smoking, but I was unknowingly poisoning myself with nicotine!

Barb, anytime, my friend! And I look awful in mustard, too. Ketchup's better. Chocolate sauce is the best, though. (Truly -- I look best in brown)!

Shelley, yanno, I was wondering about your working any more! I sure hope going back to pre-op is like riding a bicycle! I'll let you know more about the range when I have used it a few times. Install: Sept. 19 ... in case I have not mentioned that, LOL.

Donna, oh, so that's what happening. It still seems like a big OUCH to me. Thirty-two injections? Are you asleep, or at least is your leg asleep? And, I would have been royally PO'd if I showed up for a procedure and some perky little twit laughingly told me "whoops. We goofed."

Today Bob and I will hit the landscaping place and buy several of each type of edging -- inner curve, outer curve and straight. I can then use them to plot out how many we need of each type. Afterward, we will go to the Liberty Memorial for a long overdue visit to the World War I Museum. Hooray! XXOO

per my journal entry:
Quote:
Our weather guys are also watching Gustav very closely. If it comes inland between Lake Charles and Houston, it may track up into OOOOklahoma!
The weather guys are saying, for us, it could mean some outbreaks of tornadic weather, severe T-storms, and possible flooding type rain fall.
Always something! We could use some more rain, but hold the floods, please!
Alida...I am"flex" or occasional status at work, meaning less than part time(20 hrs per week) and if the boss calls and I can't or don't want to work, I'm still on the active employee roster.
That's the up-side of being flex...I can work when I want to, and the hourly wage is higher than a full or part time employee. The down side is, I do not accrue benefits anymore like vacation time, sick time, or health insurance(which we have under DH's employer anyway).

Everyone else...big waves and hugs!

I was planning a shopping trip to Norman until I realized it's game day. Think I'll avoid the crazy traffic and perhaps sew a scrub top out of some OU fabric I bought a few weeks ago. Why wait for a rainy day to sew, eh?

(((hugs)))

Shelley, Do you watch "Saving Grace" on TNT? They do a good job of portraying how serious the OU fans are. Texas people aren't that rabid about the horns........... maybe it's because the fan base is watered down by A&M and Texas Tech and several others.

DH is starting storm prep. The weather channel just said that we could get 5-20 inches of rain. If we get huge rains, we will have huge problems. At the top of his list are several sandbags. We will have flooding problems in the front of our house. Looks like one way or the other, no matter where the storm come to shore, it is going to send weather problems toward us.

Hi gals, here it is again, a whole day at work and I have so much to do that I get to 6:15pm and realize my ride will be here in 15 minutes and I have an hour of chatting I'd like to do with you all! boo hoo!

Judy, I am pinned to the news on the movements of Gustav... sounds like it's going to be another knock out - this is not good. I am hoping like h3ll that it calms considerably by the time it reaches you all...

In any case, I will get to the Beck's tonight and maybe write up some things tomorrow evening if I can stay late (easy to do)...

...I do feel like I might be losing since the clothes feel a little looser... one of the reasons I'm sidestepping Beck's is because I have a few days of weighing in and setting up weight goals and the like and until I'm in Yerevan on the 9th, I can't weigh myself so this doesn't make sense now. I may skip those days and try to get back on the planning, monitoring and tracking of the food plans... that is the one area (I know it would happen) where I have the hardest time... ugh!

ok, I need to finish up here and get home to eat (black soy bean chili with jalapenos, ground beef and topped with some diced spring onions and sour cream) - hope all of you are enjoying a FINE Labor Day Weekend!

much love - R

Major concern to all you weather-watchers! That evacuation in New Orleans must be quite an ordeal. Nobody wants to take the blame for another Katrina--let alone endure the suffering. KC weather report predicts three days of thunderstorms starting Wednesday. For now, we are blissfully mild.

I've made Mashed Fauxtatoes for the condo Potluck this evening. I'm sure there will be irresistible contributions from others, but I'll do my best to choose carefully.

Tomorrow? I'll probably clean house. It's been a while since the dustmop saw the underside of my furniture. Labor Day indeed!

I long to talk politics in these interesting times, but that's entirely too volatile a subject for our pleasant and personal forum.

Hope you are all finding some time to relax this weekend!

We have:
~ 15 or 20 sandbags
~ tarps to lay down before we put in the bags
~batteries
~another flashlight
~propane for the cooker
~ MOSQUITO REPELLENT!
Tomorrow I'll cook things that can be eaten and will have a relatively decent life expectancy if the electricity goes off. No matter where the storm comes to shore, it is coming at us. As you watch the news on TV, depending on the landfall predictions, we are in one of the outer two regions. We should begin getting the effects tomorrow night. Our big fear is a stall. The stall is what will dump the flash floods on us.

I love Ray Nagin's quote. He straight up told them in plain language, "Get your butts out of New Orleans." To bad that message wasn't more forcefully conveyed last time. We've been watching NO news on LA public broadcasting all day. I think everyone got the message this time.

Yeah...I saw his press conference also. Pretty straight forward advice, I'd say.
It does appear the majority of NO folks have evacuated inland. This whole thing seems like a bad nightmare, I tell ya.

Our weather guys think there may be major flooding in the SE part of our state(my hometown area); they say a possibe 6-20 inches of rain...yikes!

Judy keep in contact here if you are able, especially tomorrow evening. We'll be worried aboutcha, yanno!

I'll leave this thread open until morning, but I'll open a Sept vets tracking now before I go to bed.

nitey nite, friends!
