Don't knock Senior discounts. Get 'em whenever you can! Besides, you might have that ever-enjoyable experience of getting "carded"

The Taubes book is extremely dense. The only way to read it is in random bites.
Still, it's unnerving to learn how ridiculously unreliable the "studies" are that have brought us hydrogenated margarines, statins, hormone-replacement drugs, and the ever-popular low-fat diet.

Carry on, ladies!

Thanks mucho for the high mileage BD wishes! I can tell 3 miles just might be my limit for a while. LOL! The back and hip are complaining tonight; and I'm really big on "listening to your body", so I'm getting the message loud and clear.
But, for the most part, it's been a pain free day.

nite-nite!

How's the morning after, Birthday Girl? Tell me some more things you like doing with your immersion blender. If I were to get a blending appliance, would you suggest the immersion blender over the Bullet?

Three miles running is a huge accomplishment. I can't believe I used to be a distance runner, because even walking now takes quite a toll on my joints. But walking or running, what a great energizer!

My LC head adjustment is going well. I'm back to the "I can't believe I fell off the wagon!" stage. If only I'd listened to myself months ago.

Thinking of all of you.

In addition to devouring large chunks of Gary Taubes's book--hereafter referred to as GCBC--I found a video of a lecture he gave. It's 90 minutes or so, and provides a pretty good slice of the argument he makes against traditional "wisdom" on what causes obesity. So...if you have some time to spare...Weight of the Evidence: Gary Taubes

The bottom line is: carbohydrates make you fat, not fats.

And if you've ever been certain that you gain weight on a perfectly "normal" amount of calories...you're probably right.

I find all of this fascinating and motivating. I'm more determined than ever to limit carb consumption, no matter what. Meanwhile, I'm going to make sure I don't shortchange myself on calories.

Gary Taubes just joined my pantheon of dietary heroes, right after Dr. Atkins.

on the fly.....
well, Barb, I would be hard pressed to recommend one little *giz-whiz* over the other. I like them both! In actuality, they pretty much do the same thing. If you are into protein shakes and smoothies, the magic bullet would prolly be the best. If you like puree'd (?sp...yeesh, that doesn't look right, but I'm to tired to look up the correct spelling, so sorry about that) foods, like cream of broccoli or cauli soups, or garden veggie soup with a little texture, then the immersion tool would be for you. Either I didn't have enough cream in the bowl, or it doesn't do that great of a job on whipped cream. I may try again tomorrow to whip some more cream. The book tauts it for making coulis, frothing milk or cream for latte' and cappuccinos, and the soups I mentioned above. It will make smoothies, but the ice has to be crushed first; same for the MB. So....a crap shoot...pick a gadget...any gadget... LOL!

over and out!
and a good night to all!

Thanks, Shelley. As I continue on my present journey, I foresee more gadgets in my future! I really must expand my repertoire of LC cookery.

Even as I soak up information, I have to remember to keep my eye on the ball. For every theory, there's a competing theory, and somebody passionate to tell you about it. When it comes to everyday behavior, simple works best for me.

Friday night, my guy and I are celebrating our birthdays, which are exactly a week apart. We had previously decided on a famous local Italian restaurant, with the fabulous three-pasta repast. I still love the place, but I'm going to look for the meat dish instead. Gotta learn to live the celebrations in a new way, too.

It's Wednesday, Judy. What we used to call hump day--downhill to Friday. What's our lesson plan?

Have a good one.

running by... LOL!
I guess it wasn't toooo much of a fluke; I ran 3 miles again today. It did seem a little easier, and my hip and back aren't complaining quite as loudly...just kinda mumbling amongst themselves.

I'm about to put myself in overdrive; I've started Christmas sewing. I should've started it back in May when I first had the notion, but I didn't, so now I have to mash my motor to get it done.
My BFF in CO said lots of folks wanted a little Santa cardigan like I made for her a few years ago. So, if there is a market, I'll supply the goods!
Anyhoo...ho...ho...ho! My sewing room is looking a bit like Santa's workshop. LOL!

to infinity and beyond!

(((hugs to all)))

Good Grief, Ju.
The jungle just keeps getting more dangerous. I don't blame you for having thoughts of retirement!

take care!

OMG, Judy. Is this your school?? I mean, it's ghastly anywhere, but this doesn't help you get out of bed in the morning. I'm so sorry.

No, it's not my school. Tyler is about 49 miles from here. It is the school district where my son and his family live. There had already been talk of Miss O going to private school. That probably sealed the decision. They are saying that it is an isolated incident with a seriously disturbed student. I would say that description might be a bit understated.

No place is immune to this kind of random violence. Random just seems to be occurring a lot more often these days.

Well, I have to warn against TMI. Now that I'm on my LC rampage, I'm gorging on information, and it isn't helping my digestion one bit. I am, however, doing nicely on my plan, and ultimately what else counts? I'm glad I have a guru--Dr. Atkins RIP--because there's a definite advantage in having a vantage point from which to "tweak."

We dragged the boat out to the lake yesterday, in a conniption of optimism. The water was glassy. No possibility of a sail. Maybe today, when the weather forecast suggests "light breeze."

Shelley, I'm envisioning you in a chaos of glitz and glitter in your sewing room. Have a good time--and lucky the recipients of your Christmas craftiness!

I'm eager to get out for a walk, and it's still dark. This seems to have happened all of a sudden. I've gotta start sleeping later.

It may still be dark when you get up, Barb, but it's the other end of the day that is starting to bother me...... I HATE HATE HATE it getting dark early in the evenings. What makes it even worse is that daylight savings times ends in another month. In the middle of the winter, it's not unusual for it to be almost dark by the time I get home. Early darkness cuts out afternoon walks.

Quote:

And morning walks, for that matter. I hate the idea of treadmill, but that may happen. At least I can choose another time of day.

In KC yesterday, a kid staying after school to finish a project was injured by flying glass--from a window shattered by drive-by bullets. How can children survive in an urban culture held hostage by vengeance and violence?? Who can stop it until the neighborhoods stage their own revolution? And violent behavior transplants itself. At KU (University of Kansas) players on football and basketball teams are engaged in a rivalry that one letter writer (to the STAR) compared with rams butting heads over ewes. Back to the Stone Age.

End of rant.

I stepped on the scales yesterday, and celebrated 10 lbs. gone. I'm going to be the best low-carber on the planet for 15 more. Hope it continues to go so well, but I'm prepared to recommit for life--as I always say. Har.

I'm practicing my museum tour today with my great-niece and her friend--two third graders. Bet they'll be smarter than the average school tourist, and I'm counting on them to give me some good feedback.

Have a good weekend.
