Talking Vintage recipe sites

I was doing some reading about traditional American cooking this morning, so I decided to go surfing for some vintage recipes. I found several very cool sites!

This is the original Fanny Farmer Boston Cooking School Cookbook! http://bartleby.com/87/

An old-timey family cookbook: http://www.compusmart.ab.ca/elien/recipes.htm

Another good vintage recipe site: http://www.freerecipe.org/

See, I was wanting recipes for salad dressings, etc. without the modern "cooking oils," but ones using lard, butter, cream, eggs, and the like. I stumbled onto some great sites. All of these were pretty tough to locate, so if you like them, I'd bookmark them! (I did! )

Watch out for recipes after about 1912 -- that is when Crisco and veg. oils were introduced into our food supply. Of course these recipes aren't "low carb" but you can always do general substitutions, and you'd be surprised at how many of the recipes really are low carb :cook:

Great links, Sharron, thanks.

We actually have the Boston School cookbook! The 1928 printing. I'll have to go check it for what types of oils it uses.

That's good to know that the 1918 edition is the last one she was involved with. I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

yah know i just love OLD cook books ect... i have 4 big storage containers of cookbooks that i am needing to go threw . In my religion i have no specifc eating ways... yet i have tons of Jewish cook books and other ethinic cook books.. just beacuse i would go to auctions or yard sales and would get them for free or dirt cheap prices.. and i figured i could find at least a recipe or two that i would use out of them... funny thing is in most of the ones i found that i usta like... were all pasta, rice (high carb ) cook books.. lol.. i also found alot of microwave cookbooks.. tell me who in the world would try and cook an entire turkey in a microwave???????

i think the oldest one i have i cant even open beacuse the pages fall apart. it was if irecall corect early 1900's i think it had water damadge at one time makeing pages even more fragile.

thanks for shareing sharron!

Thank you, Sharron. I spent some time in the baking section on the first link. When I have time, I'll check out the other links. I love reading recipes and I know I'm not alone in that interest. Those were fun though - different! Using a good cup-for-cup bake mix instead of flour and Splenda Granular instead of sugar (and maybe one or two other modifications) makes it easy to convert the recipes to low-carb. I'm not about to do any experimenting for quite a while though. I have other things going on in my life now, which are taking priority.

Thanks again - such fun!!!

Thanks, Sharron. Those are great sites. I've got a reprint of the Fanny Farmer book (1896 version) that I look to all the time.

Like you, Gilley, I have a large collection of ethnic cookbooks ... not to mention every cheesy cookbook put out in "spiral bind" from every collection of locals in most places I've visited. Actually, one of my favorites I got at an eatery in Virginia - lots of ham recipes.

Always appreciating a humorous approach, I've still got a couple of cookbooks approved by the American Heart Association.

I just KNEW someone besides me would enjoy reading those sites!!!

I got a TON of egg ideas off the Fanny Farmer...

Oh, Mags, that is so fabulous that you have the classic Fanny Farmer (I almost said "classic Fanny!" ) The one online has included a few "frankenfoods" because it was re-pub in 1917, after the advent of Crisco, though mostly she's still sticking with whole foods. I wonder if I can get a copy at the library

*sigh*

No such luck. They don't have any of her books in my library system, at least...

Oh, well, I'll have to be satisfied with the one I found, and to be honest I'm thrilled with that :great:

I've always suspected Maggie of having a "classic fanny" myself!

My "classic fanny" was published in the seventies. It's in large paperback format and looks to be a straight copy of someone's 1896 version of the cookbook. There are a few places where there are hand written annotations throughout.

eBay has a few copies, different vintages - check 'em out!

I have some old recipe books that belonged to my grandmothers - I'll have to dig them out and see what I have!
