Default Whole Milk Powder

This is a copy of an earlier post under "Calling Jen Eloff." She probably is busy somewhere else so . . . . does anyone else know about this?

"I am going to make some sweets from one of your cookbooks. I question the powdered milk. Is that the same as Carnation's instant (dry) milk?? I googled milk powder and came up with mostly Canadian firms! Of course, I never looked for it at my local health and organic stores . . . . did not need it then!

I do have a can of Keto milk powder. Mix with water and get . . . lc milk. Would that work? The can does say it containes milk and eggs."

Update: In her cookbook, she did mention American Spice Co. as a source for this. I'd rather not pay shipping for a $7 purchase if possible! And Wild Oats doesn't carry it.

Thanks!

I don't blame you! I also do not order online very much for the same reason. It is very costly for Canadians actually. For instance, for me to buy the popular Carbquik product (although I have a Bisquick substitute in latest book, I'd like to try their product to compare performance in certain recipes) from a Canadian website, it would cost me $21-00 in total for only 1 lb. That's just too much for me. :( I refuse to buy from Netrition, the major online supplier, because of managements' unethical and biased practices, but shipping to Canada would probably also be more costly.

Check the "Calling Jen Eloff" thread for my reply re the milk powder dilemma.

Interesting about Netrition. I have had nothing but good results ordering from them. Is it because of the Canadian shipping costs? I have also wondered WHY it costs so much to ship to Canada. Perhaps the shippers have to do special paper-work? Geez, you can mail a Christmas card to Canada for the same postage as US. Wonder why they just can't use the US Post Office in the same way . . . only a bigger package!

I'm rather interested about Netrition, too. They are just about the only supplier that I order on-line from and every order has been hassle-free. I'm wondering if the problem with shipping to Canada has to do with duty charges? My Braun food processor came from Canada (just about the last place that I could find it as it has been discontinued) and I thought the shipping was really great until I got a bill from UPS for the duty charges that they paid on my package when it came over the border. Oh well, it was worth it. I do know that from growing up on the other border, that Mexicans who came across the line to shop always would bring suitcases with them to pack their clothing purchases in after removing the packaging and tags so that they could hopefully get them back over without paying the Mexican duties on them.

Oh, it's not the ordering process that is the problem with Netrition, although I don't doubt shipping to Canada is expensive. I have a problem with the management, but I won't gossip about the details on here.

OK, Jen. I can respect that. I imagine being in the cookbook "business" you work more closely with suppliers than us ordinary folk!
