| Mary, My first suggestion to you would be to pick an actual plan, like Atkins, South Beach, Carb Addict's, etc. A great book to read would be Jonny Bowden's Living the Low Carb Life. It has a great section on the history of low carb, explains the science of it in a very readable, understandable manner, and goes over most (like 10-14) low carb plans. Awesome book. Then, once you've chosen a plan, get that book (either buy it or get it from your library) and read it cover to cover. This will give you a good road map and let you know what foods you should/shouldn't be eating. Hope this helps. Best wishes to you on your weight loss journey!

| You will have the best luck sticking with real food. Stay away from low carb bars, shakes, muffins, cakes, cookies and candy. If you want sweets-make your own, then you know what's in them. Sugar-free Jell o with whipped cream seems to be what everyone usually starts with. There are some low carb products that are really good like the Carb Countdown milk. I like the low carb yogurt, I really should make my own yogurt but it's so easy to buy it. Basically what you want to do is eat meat and low carb vegetables. Like last night we had roast beef, Baked Cauliflower With Cheese, green beans and a salad. The night before that we had Chicken stir fry with low mein with spaghetti squash for the noodles and egg rolls. I split my egg roll open and eat the stuffing but not the wrapper. That way you get the taste of the egg roll without the carbs. This lady has a website with a lot of really good recipes. http://users3.ev1.net/~fontlady/ The recipes that are suitable for Induction are marked with an *. Also check out foodtv.com for the show "Low Carb and Loving It" with George Stella. He has a lot of good recipes. Editing to add: By the way, when you first start out it's possible that your going to feel like crap! That will be your system going through sugar withdrawal. Don't give up, in a short while it will pass and you will feel better than you have ever felt in your life. Last edited by BettyR; 01-10-2005 at 08:17 PM. |

| Ditto on getting the book and following it and on eating real food. Meat and high fiber vegetables should be the mainstay of your diet during induction (and afterward really). |

| if i could add anything that wasnt added in here... some staples of LC in my life are 1 dozen hardboiled eggs (each week!) at least everyother week i bake off a turkey breast to have for snacking, lunches dinner ideas ect.. i also do the same w/ a roast or ham.. i also keep cheese cubes, heavy cream, splenda, butter, olive oil, and at all times i have one of those bags of salad blends (for no excuse dinner!) celery, and green peppers (or yellow or red) if you shop from the outer isles of your market you will succed beacuse you need lots of fresh produce - and frozen veggies are life savers too meats some dairy. DRINK LOTS OF WATER..no less than a gallon a day.. and educate your self in the way you are going to eat!

| Induction was the hardest part for me. I ate fried burger patties, sometimes with a piece of cheddar cheese on top; beef roast; barbecued steak; chicken breasts cooked on a mini George Foreman grill or slices of ham (not the honey kind) with a piece of cheese; scrambled eggs; egg and cheese omelet; bacon. I also ate a small lettuce salad with bleu cheese dressing and a bit of shredded cheddar or bleu cheese every day. (You can have more of a variety of veggies, but I didn't the first two weeks. I took the "small salad" literally when I read the book.) After induction I felt more comfortable adding in other veggies and a couple weeks later I even ate the ocassional 1/2 C of raspberries w/Splenda and cream. A couple times I had cream cheese mixed with a bit of cocoa and splenda...but it didn't quite kill the chocolate craving. Now, I'm trying to be more concientious about the number of calories as well as carbs. I think it's important to have a good balance as well as a variety of veggies. This is my downfall. I tend to stick with green beans, romaine, cauliflower, cabbage, baby spinach and a bit of tomato.
