    Default Grill pan

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with some info. I sure would appreciate it!

I got a cast iron grill pan from Target. Not the best...about 25 bucks. I went to season it like the directions said and it was the most horrible chemical smell that took over my apartment and almost sent me into an asthma fit.(not reall but felt like it) I had to open all the windows and doors and create a draft to get the smell out. I dont recall this happening with my cast iron skillet so was wondering what the heck happened? Maybe because of a cheaply made cast iron pan?? The next day I tried to toast a piece of bread on it to see how it would cook. The smell came up again and left a burn mark where the bread was. I dont get that with my skillet..I am confused.

Maybe I need to spend more to get a better made pan? Help!

    Blessings,

    CER,
What exactly were the directions included with the pan? And, what kind of oil did you use to season it? I've used cast iron cookware for years and have never had a problem with it.

I wonder if there was some sort of manufacturing oil left on it?

I'd scrub it out REALLY well with hot soapy water and start over! Dry it in the oven after the soap/rinse, then start over with the seasoning. I usually use spray fat (like Pam) to do my cast iron grill pan.

    What brand is it?

Thanks so much for your replies!

The brand is called Country Cabin and it was bought from Target. The price was only 19.99. NOt sure if I need to spend more?? or get a better brand? Thats what I need help with too! The directions say to wash in hot soapy water and dry well. To wipe it down with vegtable oil. I believe I used organic shortening which is from palm oil and per the manufacture of this oil it is good to deep fry foods in so I am guessing it was ok to use on the grill. The oven temp should be set at 300 and cook for 1 hour.

Char and Trina did you experience any awful smell that I typed? Should I try again before taking it back??

    LouG...Thanks for that link!

Is there a chance that the shortening could be rancid? Just a thought.

Um, nope, there was never any offensive smell when I seasoned my pans. Could be, like Susie said, the oil is rancid, or maybe some sort of glitch in the manufacture of the pan. I wouldn't try again; any smell would certainly effect the taste of any food prepared in your pan. I would take the pan back and ask them if they have had a problem with this brand of pan in the past. I'm so sorry this happened to you!!

PS: I've always used a brand of cast iron cookware called Lodge. Never had any problems so far.

I have Lodge also. They even sell them on Amazon at a good price - I just bought a 12" one there.

I'd be tempted to take that sucker back too! No weird smells from mine either....

Take it back! If you have the reciept Target is generally great about returns, tell them it is defective and caused the nasty smell and all that. Even if you don't have the reciept they should give you store credit. Then do as others suggested and get a higher end one. I think cast iron pans are something you need to spend more dough on but then they should last you a lifetime. I learned this the hard way when I bought my mom a cheap set ($100 but it was cheaply made) when I was younger. She woudn't touch it, didn't tell me but she did end up giving it all away.
