Question Quick question...

Does anyone know if, during induction, you can eat cottage cheese? I know that the first two weeks are supposed to be no carbs, but I also know that some meats have a few carbs, and they don't count. The cottage cheese I have is 4%, so it's not low fat or light, so it has the lowest amount of carbs (4g) cottage cheese can have. Is it that all cheese and meat carbs don't count?
Also, I know that pickles have two carbs, and that they are on the "okay to eat" list for Atkins, but are they okay to eat during the induction period?
Thanks for any advice!

Actually induction is 20 carbs per day, and that is for 2 weeks! You can get loads of info at atkins web site!

Yeah, I knew that it was two weeks of only 20 carbs per day, but i thought the meat and cheese carbs were the only ones you could have for those two weeks? I'll check out that website, thanks a ton!!

I would strongly encourage you to read Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution. Your original post has a lot of misinformation about this WOE (way of eating).

I assume you want to follow the Atkins program? If so, there seems to be some misunderstanding here of the induction phase foods. If you haven't already got it, I highly recommend getting a copy of the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution and becoming familiar with it. In the meanwhile, as Junie says above, there's lots of good information available to help you get started on the Atkins website.

Other than some cured meats and shell fish, meat usually doesn't have carbs. If it does, it counts.

Cottage cheese is excluded from the list of induction acceptable foods (see http://atkins.com/Archive/2001/12/15-464579.html). You may find you can have cottage cheese in the later phases of the Atkins program. During induction, natural solid cheeses and cream cheese are okay, but avoid the processed cheeses like "American" cheese.

Most of your 20 g. carbs should be coming from low carb vegetables. However, you can subtract the grams of fiber from the grams of carb and only count the net carbs.

For example, 2 stalks of celery run about 3 g carb and 1.5 g fiber. When you subtract the fiber, the net carb equal 1.5 grams (3 minus 1.5).

Similarly, a cup of cooked brocolli is 8 g. carb and 4.5 g. fiber, for 3.5 net g. of carbohydrate (8 minur 4.5).

Anyway, welcome! We're all wishing you much success, so keep us posted on how things are going.

Ya know? I've got that book, I don't know why I haven't read it yet. My mom has been on atkins for almost two years so I pretty much took all my pointers from her. I think I felt like it wasn't necessary since the first time I did it I lost 15lbs. I think I'll go start it now Thanks a lot for the information!
