Default Question Regarding Maggie's Cereal

All right, I want to make up a batch of Maggie's Cereal, and am getting ready to order from netrition.com. I found soy protein isolate, and of course the flaxseed, but the coarse unprocessed wheat bran I'm not finding. Is this something that's readily available at a health food store, or am I searching for the wrong thing, or is it the same thing as wheat germ, or what? I need some help, please! Thanks in advance!

Wheat germ and wheat bran aren't the same thing. You should be able to find wheat bran though, if nothing else at a health food store.

I THINK netrition sells it - haven't looked there in a long time though, as I buy that kind of stuff now from honeyvillegrain.com - great prices if you don't mind buying in bulk. I buy my flax seeds from them in 5 pound bags for a great price!

Eddie, I have Maggie's cereal usually at least 3-4 times a week. It is a wonderful tool for a controlled carb WOE. I make batches of Maggie's cereal mix using 2 pound increments of each ingredient. I get my wheat bran at a "natural" foods type store. The wheat bran is sold in bulk so I just weigh out how much I need, at $.69 a pound, it is the cheapest of the ingredients. I also get my flaxseed meal there (Bob's Red Mill). FWIW, I get my soy protein isolate from Honeyville grains. It is sold in 4 pound bags for a little less than $3.50/pound. I have not seen it any cheaper elsewhere. HTH

Eddie,
Maggie's cereal rocks! I eat it all the time, and add different stuff to change the flavor, like DaVinci syrups, spices, cocoa powder, etc.
I buy wheat bran in the grocery store, next to the hot cereals. Sometimes it is labeled hot cereal, but if you check the ingredients, it should read "100% wheat bran". It's pretty cheap. I buy oat bran there, too. I like to add oat bran sometimes; it makes the cereal taste a lot like oatmeal.
Ask at your grocery store about wheat bran; if they don't already carry it, store managers can be pretty accomodating sometimes, and will order stuff for you if they know you are a regular customer.

Thank you everyone for the info! I'm going shopping this evening so I will look for the wheat bran while I'm out!

Yup. Most any health food store will have bran, often in bins. If you have a choice, get the coarsest they offer. Gives it a nice texture and "mouth-feel".
