Thumbs up Maggie's Cereal

By popular request, making a sticky out of Maggie's Cereal:

Maggie s Breakfast Cereal

16 oz. Flax meal
16 oz. Soy protein isolate*
16 oz. Coarse unprocessed wheat bran

(It just happens that the brand of flax meal and bran which I buy come in 16 oz bags and the isolate comes in a 16 oz canister. You can make a smaller batch, just make sure you use equal parts by weight - not by volume.)

Mix 'em up in a big bowl till everything's blended and store in an airtight container (like tupperware, or heavy duty ziplocks) in the fridge. Flax and flax meal should always be refrigerated, since they have oils which would go rancid over time, if not kept cool.

In the morning put about 1/3 to 1/2 a cup into a bowl and add boiling water while stirring until it's the consistency you like.

Add cream, splenda and whatever else strikes your fancy and fits into your current carb allowance: vanilla, nuts, fruit, davinci syrup, cocoa, etc. Have a different flavor every time!

This generally yeilds about 30 1/2 cup servings.

Carb counts are for the cereal mix, alone. Remember to add the numbers for whatever goodies you use!

*(NOTE: Do not use soy flour - it would be dreadful. Soy protein isolate is an unflavored product. Read the label. It should have only one ingredient "soy protein isolate." The many soy powders and/or soy protein powders would probably work just fine in this recipe, but you must adjust the carb count based on whatever product you choose.)

I found some splenda/brown sugar mix this weekend. As long as you realize 1/2 a teaspoon (yeah, tsp) is considered a serving - having a little of this and some sf syrup on my m.c. this morning. Heaven! about as close to maple /brown sugar oatmeal as it gets. I keep a ziplock bag of this in the fridge with a 1/3 c measuring cup in there. Easy 1-2-3.

I started having Maggie's cereal with cinnamon and splenda. It was good, then I got some brown sugar splenda syrup and made it with that and the cinnamon. That was wonderful. The next variation I made was to also include unsweetened dried cranberries. That then became my base combination. Then I started grating a little fresh nutmeg into it too. That makes an even better combination. (If any combination needs a little more sweetness, I add some liquid stevia to the bowl.)

Other combinations I use from time to time are:
1.vanilla, brown sugar splenda syrup and strawberries;
2.cinnamon, brown sugar splenda syrup, nutmeg, and blueberries; and
3.vanilla, brown sugar splenda syrup, cocoa, and Davinci french vanilla syrup.

Thanks Maggie.

Maggie's cereal is a staple at this house! There are so many variations you can add to it (watching the carbs). It is filling and yummy! Thanks again Maggie for such a wonderful and versatile creation!

Sheryl, I get brown sugar splenda syrup at Nature's Flavor. Here is a link to their website.
http://www.naturesflavors.com/default.php?cPath=39
Their shipping rate is not the best, so I have started getting the brown sugar splenda syrup by the gallon to save cost.

i have been making MY mags cereal with the flaxseed(freshly ground) the wheatbran, and carbsense bake mix,or the biscuit mix (they both have the protein isolate and PRETTY much the same other crap as well..) instead of just protein isolate cause i got the stuff so cheap on clearance ... with THIS mixture i use IT for the minute muffin, so it is REALLY just minutes from the mix to the micro!

this evening, i got a box of the carbsense corn muffin mix, used two tablespoons of IT and ONE tablespoon of the MAGS MIX, and made a corn muffin sorta tasting thing..(i didnt add sweetener and it was yummy sweet from the mix)

PLUS i have the added benefit of having mags cereal WHENEVER i feel like it... once again just minutes from the mixture to the micro!
i use a maple syrup
or, i use cinnamon, but i might try the PUMPKIN PIE SPICE instead next time..

anyway ya make it, mags cereal ROCKS!

All right, I have a question. I LOVE this cereal but I'm a bit confused by the listed carb counts, so maybe I'm reading something wrong. According to the listed carb counts, a serving has 4 net carbs. But when I look at the ingredients that doesn't seem to jive. Wheat bran and flaxmeal are all fiber, and soy protein isolate is .5 gram carb for 1/3 cup. So, since it's a mixture, it seems to me that the net carb count is basically zero (before any add ins, obviously). Am I missing something? Answers, please!

Eddie...my wheat bran lists 10g carb with 6g fiber for a net carb count of 4g for the wheat bran per serving. Of course, because it's mixed with other things it's not quite a full serving of the bran but i still count it as 4g.

Eddie, as Maggie's cereal is equal parts by weight, the ingredient with the most volume is the wheat bran as it is the lightest in weight. Most of the carb count in the cereal mix comes from the wheat bran. The USDA Nutrient Database lists wheat bran as having 37.42 carbs per cup with 24.8 grams of fiber. Similarly, flaxseed meal is shown as having 32.35 carbs per cup with 30.6 grams of fiber. The soy protein isolate I use is shown as having 0 carbs, however, that could mean anywhere from 0 to .49 actual grams of carb. I make the mix in 6 pound batches (2 pounds of each ingredient) and then measure the amount of mix as I package it for storage to determine the carb count per serving. My serving size is 1/2 cup and by my calculation, that size has 6 net carbs per serving, most of which obviously come from the wheat bran, so that is what I use for my tracking purposes.

Ah, that explains it. I get my bran in bulk and have never looked at the nutrition info on the bulk bin. I just assumed it figured out to be zero net carbs, kinda like flaxmeal. Thanks for the info everyone!

I enjoy using different combinations of things with Maggie's cereal. The cereal provides what I consider to be a neutral palette which can then be altered to your individual taste. My "standard" for a long time has been cinnamon and fresh ground nutmeg with unsweetened dried cranberries and some brown sugar splenda syrup. To this standard I have now added some ground allspice for a wonderful spiced cereal breakfast. This combination will now be my standard, especially since I just bought 6 pounds of unsweetened dried cranberries.
