Default Nut Flour Question

I was searching online for some almond flour and I was floored by the rise in cost since the last time I bought some.

I had purchased around 30 pounds of almond flour a year ago. I stored it in my freezer and I'm down to my last 3 pound bag. I had paid $3.00 a pound for the last batch and the best price I can find now is $5.65 a pound.

I found a site that has macadamia nut flour for 4.78 a pound and I was wondering if anyone has used this flour and if so how they liked it.

Apparently the bad weather around the country this past year did a number on the almond crops, so the price of almonds has really gone up.

I've never tried mac flour, but I've heard that it's good

Hmm, I haven't tried it. But if it isn't too, too oily, why not? Mac nuts have a pretty bland flavor, so the nut flavor wouldn't over power the other ingredients.

Yes, prices for almonds rose sharply this year. Almonds are a pretty big crop in California, so I was really surprised by the change in prices. I was told that the decimation of the bee population by bee mites is adversely affecting harvests. :(

The best prices I've seen are at local farmer's markets where they go for about $10 for 2 pounds of shelled whole nuts. If I don't overgrind them, they make a decent almond flour - not as fluffy as Trader Joe's but quite serviceable.

I've ordered from almondsonline.com a couple of times and been very satisfied with the quality and quick order turn around. They run just under $6/lb for blanched almond flour. Shipping costs are reasonable for me, but I don't live so far away. Trader Joe's recently started stocking almond flour again, I think I recall that it's about $5.89/pound now - cheaper than Honeyville Grain.

YIKES!! I'm going back to Target tomorrow and buy a bunch of the Bob's Red Mill Almond Meal/Flour....it's only $1.99 a bag. I bought a bunch at Christmas and I thought the price was actually a mistake.

Thursday, I took DD there to get a b-day gift for a friend, so I decided to check and see if it was still $1.99 and it was.....I wonder why it's so cheap at Target? I also wonder how long it would keep in the freezer.....

I was used to paying $9.99/bag at Kroger, and happy to buy it for $7.99 on sale. We have to drop DD at the b-day party tomorrow and go to the hardware store right by the Target, so I'll buy some more if they still have it.

I went to Target last Saturday as promised.....and bought 4 more bags of Bob's Red Mill Almond Meal/Flour for $1.99 per bag.

I was at Kroger tonight, picking up a prescription....so I decided to check the price of the Bob's meal there. I'd bought it for $9.99 before, and happy to get it for $7.99 on sale. It was back to $9.99/bag.

I even looked at Bob's Red Mill website. It sells for $11.00 + change there. I wonder if the Target price is a mistake? That's a HUGE difference. The Bob's website charges almost $10 more per bag than TARGET??? And that doesn't include shipping. Weird.

I thought so, too....the $1.99 is pre-printed exactly like the others on the shelf tag. (I looked at it very closely! And, they ring up $1.99 each. Oh, well! I'd be willing to be Target doesn't go bankrupt over that.

Hull is in Liberty County, we're about half way between Beaumont and Houston, about 45 miles North of I-10. The towns of Hull and Daisetta are side by side, and the two towns together have a population of around one thousand people. Very small town Texas, we're a farming community.

Let me know where and when the meeting is going to be, I'm not sure I'll be able to make it if it's very far away. I have to be very careful with my money right now, I have two kids in college so I'm very poor.

Edit to add: The site with the Macadamia Flour is http://www.nuts4u.com/
The 23 pound order comes out to around $4.78 a pound, before taxes and shipping. It's in Sugar Land which is about 1 hour and 45 minutes from me. With the price of gas I'd probably do better just getting it shipped. The almond flour is the same price.
