I make my smoothies with kefir, which is a lower carb dairy product - somewhat like buttermilk or a cross between buttermilk and yogurt. I put some ice in the blender, 1/2 a cup or so of kefir and a scoop of the designer whey protein powder. I sweeten with a drop or two of liquid splenda; or, sometimes, I add some frozen berries.

I got some kefir grains from Maggie so I make my own kefir; but you can buy it at some supermarkets. Safeway carries the Lifeway brand and Whole Foods has both Lifeway and Helios.

If you don't want to use kefir, you could make a protein shake with ice, water, and some sour cream or half and half.

Designer whey protein is also great in Maggie's cereal. My version uses 2 scoops of whey protein powder, 2 scoops of ground flaxseeds and 1/2 scoop of wheat bran or a 1/4 scoop of oat bran. When I make the cereal, I put a scoop or two in a cup and cover with boiling water, add some sweetner, and stir well. My DH prefers it without additional sweetner.

Just follow the directions on the container, add some fruit, or cream or half n half if you want a richer flavor, or sf flavored syrups, and then chill it thoroughly. Shake it up real good and enjoy! The colder the better.

I just got some Lifeway plain kefir on sale at Whole Paycheck - 2 for $5 - and used 1/2 a cup this morning for a smoothie, along with 2 oz. 100% pomegranate juice and 1 scoop "Fuzzy Navel" whey protein powder, and then filled up my 16 oz. glass with water. I used my little whirly battery stirrer thingie - made quite a good drink! Tomorrow I might put it in my VitaMix with some crushed ice and see how THAT does.

I also have Designer Whey powders in vanilla, praline, strawberry, and choc/peanut/caramel flavors. I feel a lot of smoothie experimenting coming on!

Gee, I shoulda put some coconut oil in there too - ah well, tomorrow.

mmm... coconut oil tends to congeal into little waxy lumps in a cold liquid. At least, that's what happend a few summers back when I put some in my ice cream maker. Maybe your blender would break it up better. Well, let me know how that turns out, I'm curious.

Now, a little coconut oil in a hot drink, like LC cocoa, might be quite luscious!

Now I'm just curious - has anyone has used their whey protein powders as a hot beverage?

I drink a chocolate protien shake every morning for breakfast. I've found that if I use 2 scoops rather than 1 as called for in the directions and the coldest water I can find, it goes down alot easier.
I use the vanilla whey as a cooking ingredient. I make a topping using vanilla whey, unsweetened coconut and melted butter with crushed nuts and dried fruit that makes plain yogurt magical. Add a little cinnimon and nutmeg and it makes a great baked topping for pumpkin souflle.
Never tried it as a hot beverage.

Whey protien is very high quality and a good nutrient/supplement. I drink at least 1 protein shake a day and 2 on workout days. Sorry I'm not any help with a recipe tho. I drink one called Countdown. It probably has more carbs than you want right now.
