| Just curious about how long Maggies cereal lasts. I "did" Atkins 2 years ago and then got pregnant. I'm sure you all can guess what happened then even though I had the best intentions. ANYWAY, I made a HUGE batch of Maggies Cereal back then. I found it recently. I've kept it in the freezer the whole time and the date on the baggie (I double-bagged it) is 7/6/2004. Is it still good or do I need to trash it and start over? Also, I have some Whey Protein Powder, Vital Wheat Gluten, Oat Bran and Almond Meal all purchased about the same time (2 yrs ago). They have been kept in the refrigerator the whole time. I called Vitamin Cottage to find out if they were still good, but the lady couldn't really tell me. What do you think? Can/should I use them? Or, should I just trash them and start over? Part of the reason I'm asking is that I'm horribly sick right now and can't get to the store. Thanks in advance for your help.

| Debby, if the items don't smell rancid, I think I'd take a chance on them. They might have lost some vitamin values, but I'd be inclined to try them anyway, see how they taste. I've had vital wheat gluten in my freezer for a couple of years, and it seems to be ok. Your biggest problem is the oils in the nut meal going rancid, but if it's been refrigerated, I'd guess it's probably ok. Just trust your nose and taste buds. Hope you're feeling better. |

| I agree with Nita. You had your grains and seeds well wrapped and under refrigeration;they should be nutritious and wholesome for a long time. Perhaps some small vitamin loss, but still good. If your county (still) has an agricultural extension service, they may be able to give you an expert opinion on food storage issues. Once, I had some flaxseeds in the refrigerator for over a year. Figuring, perhaps they may not be good yet, I put them out for the birds. The birds had no interest and the squirrels only a little; so the seeds just sat on top of the ground. Turns out they were quite fertile, sprouted on top of the soil, and quickly grew into a solid mass of flax flowers.

| I'm so glad this question came up. I have a batch of maggie's cereal that's been in the fridge in a big jar for four months or so. I was just wondering the other day if it would still be good. it smells fine so I'm gonna go for it
