| This is the standard recipe for Huli Huli sauce, it's what you'll find on the on bbq chicken at luau. 1/3 cup ketchup 1/3 cup soy sauce 1/2 cup brown sugar 3 tablespoons sherry 1 piece ginger root, crushed 1 clove garlic, crushed I love doing theme nights or weekends and we've become very fond of Hawaiian food (did you know Spam is low in carbs??? and as tacky as it sounds, it's darn good with eggs!!!) Ok crew, whadda think??? I don't add in the sherry (rum however totally rocks this!) I'm thinking Splenda??? Also, any suggestions on where to get lc ketchup or some combination of tomato sauce and spices I could make up myself??? |

| Tara, like many things, this recipe is fairly easy to low carb, if you have the right stuff in your pantry. I would do the following: 1/3 cup Heintz 1 carb ketchup (May now be labeled low sugar ketchup - read the label. Available at Wal-Mart and some grocery stores) (about 2.5 carbs) 1/3 cup soy sauce (about 6 carbs, depending on what it is made from.) 1/2 cup l/c brown sugar substitute (I would use the brown sugar flavored splenda syrup I buy by the gallon from Nature's Flavor. There are some granular brown sugar substitutes available, but I have not used them. The splenda syrup is 0 carbs.) ginger root (0.36 net carbs per tsp) 1 clove garlic (.99 net carbs) For the whole recipe then you are looking at about 10-11 net carbs. The count might be higher if you used a granular brown sugar substitute.

| There is a brown Sugar Twin, but I'm not terribly fond of it. But Henry's substitutions sound excellent. The Heinz ketchup is good, we buy 2 or 3 at a time, keep them handy in the pantry. The only way I can eat Spam is sliced thin and browned until really crisp, then it's quite edible. With this sauce on it, it might even be good! Especially made with rum. |

| Nita, your post triggered a memory that the first brown sugar substitute I tried, when I first started was the brown sugar twin. I too was disappointed in that product. I was pleased to find the syrup that I now use. The only thing I don't like about the product is the shipping cost that the company adds. Consequently, I buy the syrup in gallon containers by the case for the price break on the quantity and to hold down shipping costs as I use this product for a lot of recipes.

| I've used Splenda's Brown Sugar combo. It does have carbs in it, and you have to look at the equivalent on the package. I might use half of that for the b. sugar and then regular splenda for the rest of it. I too find Heinz Low Sugar ketchup pretty readily in most of my local grocery stores. I hord when I buy it! I NEVER want to be without it.
