I'd put this in the cooking forum, only it isn't really cooking! We've had snow deep enough to try this childhood favorite.

SNOW ICE CREAM

Scoop off the top layer of snow, and collect a few cups of snow in a bowl.
Thoroughly stir in:
Flavoring of your choice (I used DaVinci Amaretto--delicious!)
Splenda
Cream or half-n-half

Sorry--my measurements are inexact, but you can hardly mess this up. If you put in too much of something, just go get more snow!

My husband never had snow ice cream before, and we both thought this was a refreshing treat.

My daughter's PreK teacher always told her not to eat snow because it will give you worms! True? I have no idea.

I have no idea what that PreK teacher was thinking. It probably isn't a good idea for preschoolers to eat snow indiscriminately, but I can't imagine why worms would be a special threat!

Snow can probably hold some kinds of pollution from the air it fell through, and the surface snow can be dirty from dust, exhaust, and other nastiness. But worms? Dunno.

If I get worms from the snow ice cream, I'll definitely post a warning.

I always heard that you don't eat the first snow of the season as it cleans the atmosphere as it passes through. Subsequent snows are passing through pure atmosphere. Seems a bit far-fetched to me! We put a pot out to catch the snow rather than scoop it - for no real reason other than that's what we did when I was kid. Anyway, enjoy the WHITE stuff!

Blessings,
Cindy

My Dad used to make something very similar when I was a kid (lots of snow during the ice age, don't you know!) but it had vanilla extract, Sugar (..back then, I'd use Splenda now...), and a single egg mixed in. I'm not sure why the egg, but he always added it. All the kids in the family used to look forward to that first deep snowfall so Dad could whip up some SnowCream!

Ah, happy memories!

We called it Snow Cream too!

Although, I'm a So. Cal. girl, we used to go to Big Bear when I was a kid so I have a little experience.

This thread brings back many fond memories of my BSA scoutleader years (25). The yellow snow warning is valid anytime but it CAN add some interesting flavor. I would be cautious of using any uncooked egg products because of salmonella and it isn't worth the risk.

Feel free to add cocoa, strawberry's or other flavorings. It's a fun recipe to do while sitting in front of a fire.
