Does anybody have a good suggestion for a substitute for buttermilk in Ranch Dressing? I was thinking of using half heavy cream and half water with lemon juice in it. Does this sound like it will work?

You might try sour cream which already has a tangy taste.

The ideas are good. Thank you. The recipe already calls for 2 cups mayo and 1 cup sour cream. I need something to thin it down with.

I use Straight Whole Cream for everything! I never mix or dilute it... It gives HVR packets CREAM flavor and a wonderful thickness without haven't to add alot of other junk!
I'm cute!
Anytime I see buttermilk in a recipe, I use kefir!

Ah! The recipe already has sour cream.
Well then, I would go for the heavy cream and lemon HOWEVER, I would add the lemon juice to the mixture after you've blended the mayo, sour cream and cream together, otherwise, you may end up with curds of cream!
You could also try a little zest instead of the juice.
Another option would be yogurt thinned with a little cream.

A little bit of Carb countdown milk might do the trick as well.

Me, a skeptic? I trust you have proof.
Just curious, why do you want to sub it?? It only has 4 net carbs per cup??

Thank you for all the ideas.
Maggie, I have looked at getting a start of kefir. I would probably ruin it.
Sharon, is the carb count you mention due to the fact the the lactose has turned to lactic acid? The carb count on the buttermilk box said 13 g. per cup and the Dr. Atkins carbohydrate gram counter lists it as 11.7 g. per cup.

Deb,
Is it low fat buttermilk? It seems the lower the fat, the more the sugar. My container of organic full fat buttermilk lists 8 carbs per serving.

You can add 1 tablespoon of either vinegar or lemon juice to a cup of half & half for a buttermilk substitute. I do that all the time! You can thin it with a little water if you like. Or use half a cup of cream and half a cup of water, blend well, then add the lemon or vinegar. Stir it up well and let it sit about 10 minutes.
