Another trip to the Asian market...

I found all sorts of neat snack food!

Well, at least some worthy or trying

Dried shrimp -- apparently these are eaten like peanuts! The are a tad salty for my taste, but were just fine when alternated with raw almonds.

Quail eggs in brine -- yes, quail eggs! They are about the size of a nickel! The whites are a bit tough because they boil them first, then can them. I don't know that I would want these all the time, but they were a welcome addition to my salad!

Salt and vinegar pork rinds -- for these yummers I will drive all the way in even if I don't need anything else from that market If you've ever had a good salt n' vinegar chip, these are them only with protein!

That wraps up the snack food I found. I also found some potential thickeners and was wondering if anyone around here has used them.

One was called Acorn flour. Apparently it is for making some sort of a savory gelatin???

The next was soy (soya?) powder. It looked different than the soy isolate I use. Anyone?

There were a number of others, but those are the ones I can remember!

Also, I found some wraps that are only about 6 grams each, as opposed to the 42 that the normal egg roll wraps are. They are dried sheets. Not sure how to use them, but I figured for less than a buck, I could experiment!

I didn't get the flours cuz' they were more than $5 each. I want to know more before I shell out that kind of change on a big bag of something!

They also had nori wraps. I experimented with these about 2 years ago. They were scary. Maybe I just didn't know what I was doing or I got a bad brand, but it tasted like the skin of a really old salmon

I always get coconut milk there. Chaokoa (sp?) brand, only 79 cents a can.

Oh, and the last thing I got was some really fresh okra. Yum! Fixed them according to my fried fish recipe and had 'em for bfast this morning!

Anyone else found exciting things at their Asian market?

I buy sake by the case! Six bucks for the BIG bottles of Ozeki - 6 to a case. I tell ya, 4 oz. of sake warmed in the MW on a cold day will take the chill right off ya!

I also get chili oil, green and oolong teas, different sauces to try, etc.

On the nori - it's best when toasted over an open flame, like your gas stove, first....

Oh, yes, I forgot all about hot chili oil, sesame oil and fish sauce.

Those are such basics around my house I forgot all about them

I have no open flame, unless I get carried away with broiling my salmon in the oven.

That, though, is another topic!!!

You gals are too funny! Actually, the nori sheets are used by children for snacking - I can find bags of it already toasted and torn into smaller pieces, sometimes flavored a bit too. Those sheets would be good for a wrap sandwich - just have to eat it right away as the nori isn't as good if it gets soggy.

I always used to buy nori for making sushi...but w/o rice that may be difficult. I still have tons of pickled ginger and wasabi... ...love wasabi. I use the hot oils, too. Also korean hot sauce, harissa, cajun hot sauce, fresh peppers...just about anything.

I'll have to figure out a way to have sushi without the rice, I think. I miss it. Any suggestions?

As far as acorn flour, it looks like it has 15.5 grams of carbs per ounce. That's even more than white flour. From what I'm reading online about it, it doesn't sound like something that would fit well into an LC diet.

In the book "Neanderthin" by Ray Audette there is a recipe for Nut Sushi, using ground nuts instead of rice. I'm such a nut-head, I better try this. If I do, I'll post it.

Sharron, in the book "Nourishing Traditions" (Weston A. Price Foundation cookbook) there are several ideas for dried shrimp. I can't look them up right now because Barb has my book.

I will definitely be making a trip to the Asian market, this is a very inspiring thread!

Terra, that is sad. The package said 10 grams of carbs per cup! Humph

Yes, please, Alice on those recipes! I'd love some ideas for the shrimp and I'd even be willing to try the nori again if I had a clue about it!

Some types of sushi lend themselves to being made without the rice at all - my fave being a spicy tuna handroll. It's really tasty and I like it BETTER without the rice!

I wonder if you could use mashed cauliflower?? You'd have to "glue" it together with cheese - Sharron's recipe with the brie oughta do it - I think that's mild enough to not overpower the rest of the sushi ingredients.

Nori actually comes in many forms - small squares, big sheets, shreds - and can be used in soups, sushi, etc. It's supposed to be very good for you. I love it.

Sharron, I've bought 2 different brands of sheet nori and they were VERY different in flavor - so it may take some 'sperimentin' to find out what you like!

I'm thinking that salmon and cream cheese would be good rolled in nori too....mmmmmm!

I'm excited about nut sushi now. Need to get avocadoes before jumping in.

Nah, Terra, this is an ASIAN product. I think they put whatever they want on their packages

I once got a package of mung bean thread that said it had zero carbs and some (I don't remember what) amount of protein. Not reality. Not in the least! I've learned to be sceptical...
