If you're into eBay, you can buy them cheaper there - just search on Showtime Rotisserie or Popeil Rotisserie - you'll find lots, and plenty on the "buy it now" option - some even with free shipping!

Carol,
To get back to your original question...
If you don't have a rotisserie, try the following:
First, get a meat thermometer, if you don't already have one. This is invaluable. They have them in most grocery stores.
Use an eye of round, top round or bottom round roast. Have the store tie it for you (it cooks more evenly) or do it yourself with cotton string. Rub the outside with garlic powder, salt and pepper, and place on a rack in a roasting pan.
Heat your oven to 500 degrees, and roast for about 10 minutes, until a nice brown crust forms. Then lower the oven to 250 and roast until the internal temperature is 130 in the thickest part, for medium rare. Take the roast out and let it sit for 20 minutes. You can then carve it for hot roast beef, or chill it to slice it cold. One suggestion...remove the string before you chill it; much easier.
This will give you a juicy, evenly cooked roast with great flavor.

HTH,

Oh gee guys, please don't talk me into *another* kitchen appliance, LOL!!

Trina, do you turn the roast during the first 10 minutes or will it brown all around. (Admitting I've NEVER done a decent roast in the over.)

Brenda, if you get a Rotisserie, you won't HAVE to turn it - it turns FOR you, ALL the time!!

I'm helping you............

Maybe you can strike the same deal with him that MY DH struck with ME - one new appliance IN, one old, unused appliance OUT! Works pretty nicely!

Now let's see, just got my new DeLonghi Roto Deep Fryer - what to lose, what to lose...hmmm, perhaps ye olde BREADMAKER!

Brenda,
If you roast it on a rack, that will let the heat get all around it, so no turning is necessary. And, I put the part with the most fat facing up, so it bastes itself. Works great.

I have to admit, I WANT A ROTISSERIE! But, I'm in the same boat; I would have to give up something else, to make space. Give up my food processor? Standing mixer? Microwave? Not the coffee maker?!? I just have no room on my counters. The toaster has been banished to the pantry, LOL, and only allowed out on special occasions. Maybe the mixer and rotisserie can rotate...
I'm gonna check ebay.

Thanks, Trina. I may get up enough courage to try a "real" roast

I've banished my toaster, too., but DH keeps finding and bringing it back home......If ya find some good deals on ebay, let me know. Maybe I can pass the thing off as a new type of computer monitor--then it'd be ok with DH

Ok, here I am too lazy to re-read through this whole thread: How much do they go for and what are the best brands of rotiserries?

Phooey, too, I passed one up (actually 2!) at our church's rummage sale a few weeks ago..!

Blessings!

LOL! I know it, same here.

Although, my DH is just as bad as I am so we hardly ever get rid of anything and we buy whatever strange gadget we come across.

The lastest? A contraption called a Thermomix by Vorwerk. Never even heard of the thing but saw it sitting brand new, in the box, at the swap meet and had to have it.

It's basically a super-charged blender that also HEATS UP! I've never seen anything like it. The best part is, we paid $90 for it and it retails for $700! Isn't that nuts?!?!

It's our coolest kitchen item at the moment and makes the smoothest, creamiest gelato base you've ever seen. Also fantastic for gravies, sauces, and soups.

If you ever see one, grab it! LOL

LOL@Brenda!!!

You could tell him it's a kitchen tv, tuned to the 24-hour Meat Channel ("All Beef, All The Time!")

And Marcie, how cool is that?!? I've never heard of a heating blender. What a great find!

I found the Ronco rotisseries on Ebay; the 3000 model goes for about $50, and the whoop-de-do 6000 for about $200. My mixer just might be keeping the toaster company.

When all you people get your rotisseries, let's start a thread on "what I cooked in my Showtime!" - it'll be FUN!

I want that 6000....dear Santa, I've been a good girl ALLLLLL year!

LOLbackatTrina! I really am wanting one now! I read some opinions on Amazon, and the crowd seems to be fairly evenly split between George's and Ron's rotisseries. Neither perfect. The Showtime was knocked for its flimsy door hinge mechanism and I think for inaccurate timing instructions (and poor customer service). And the George for that backsplash thingie that never comes clean. I don't think the "Big George" model is available any more, however--just the Junior and the Baby........

Well, speaking of rotissing. Since I don't have one yet, what would you all's instructions be for roasting a nice big chicken in the oven? I have a grand, free range, organic bird in the freezer that deserves something better than becoming chicken fajitas.
