I've found some great low carb taco shells that only have one carb per shell! They taste like regular taco shells. The only difference I see in them is that they're a little thinner and slightly smaller. They're called La Tiara Authentic Mexican Taco Shells. The D'lites store in NC has them. I don't know who else carries them but they're definitely worth buying!

I just checked and found a web site for them. You can also find them at:

www.lowcarbtacoshells.com

You can buy them in individual boxes or by the case. I haven't tried the white corn ones but I have tried the yellow ones and they are great!

Thanks for the info - I checked out the website and they look great

Do you recommend one kind (white corn, etc.) over another?

Pianomom,
Yes....aren't those shells just the ticket?
So versatile too; anything I need a "tortilla" chip for, I use the La Tiera. Crushed for Taco Salad, break into wedges for nachos and for dipping, and of course a stuffed taco supreme complete with sour cream...yummmmm. I'm thinking that may be dinner tonight...LOL

TinaB, I know the yellow ones are good. They really taste like regular tacos, just the shell is a little thinner. I haven't tried the white ones yet.

I ordered a case of them since I couldn't find them at any of the stores in my area. They are wonderful.

I decided to try a little experiment with them the other day and it worked like a charm.

I soaked the shells in a large bowl of water until they were limp and pliable like a corn tortilla. I then rolled about 2 tablespoons of grated Monterey Jack cheese in the shells and covered them with some homemade low carb enchilada sauce.

They were so good, my family loved them. I made refried beans and Spanish rice for everyone else and I had enchiladas with guacamole and a side salad.

I have a question about the nutritional info?

How can the yellow corn shells have only 1 gram carb, but 2 grams of sugar?

The only thing that I can think is that they are so very thin and rather small that there is such a small amount of corn present as to make it low carb.

The net weight is 4.2 ounces and that is for 18 tacos, that is .233 ounces per taco. They are so thin and crisp and the flavor is fantastic.

I've had my case of taco shells for about a month and we have been eating tacos or enchlidas about once a week and I also break them up and warm them in the microwave and use them for chips. So far they haven't stalled my weight loss.

I'm not sure about the 2 grams of sugar either. I noticed that the white ones have 0 grams of sugar. I wonder if they taste any different from the yellow ones. Has anyone tried the white ones?

I used April's Hidden Carb Calculator on the yellow shells, and there is actually 13.175 carbs per serving!!!

HIDDEN CARB CALCULATOR
Protein 4.00 X 4.00 ...16.00
Carbohydrate 4.00 X 4.00 ...16.00
Fat 2.30 X 9.00 ...20.70
TOTAL 52.70

Calories on label 37 ... -52.70
TOTAL -13.175

When I ordered the case that I got, I had ordered the white shells but received the yellow ones. Either they made a mistake or they were out of the white and substituted the yellow. Either way I decided to keep them rather than send them back in exchange for the white ones.

I've been very happy with them but next time I order I'll order the white again and see what happens.

When I placed my order they shipped the same day and I had them in about 3 days.

Jen, I got the same number at first too but when I looked at it a few more times, I noticed that the protein is “POINT 4” grams, not 4 whole grams.

With that in mind, the numbers come out pretty well EXCEPT THE SUGAR PART.

I fear they might be doing the “eden dance” in that the fiber has ALREADY BEEN REMOVED FROM THE CARB COUNT. I don’t know but that’s my guess. Which would mean the following….

Total carbs should read 7 g
Fiber is 3g
Sugar is 2 g
And there are 2 “other” carb types

I don’t see THEM saying only 1 carb per shell anywhere so this is what I’m guessing is correct. I would count them as 4g per shell until I found out otherwise.

What are the ingredients in them? I couldn't find anything on the website.

For the yellow tacos, the ingredients listed on the box are:
yellow corn, water, lime, & vegetable shortening.

What is the actual formula for figuring out the hidden carbs? I must be doing something wrong cause I can't get it to come out right.

Also, since the white tacos list sugar as 0 grams, do you think they would only have one carb per taco? I wrote to the people on this website and asked them about the carbs. I'll let you know what they say.

Betty and all,
I did find the La Tiera shells at my Albertson's, btw. Boy was I surprised to see them there!
