I picked up a new little recipe book at my check-out counter today (I love those little books!), and it is entitled Taste of Home's Low-Carb Recipes. It has 76 recipes with 10 grams of carbs or less per serving. Many of them are much less. And each recipe is on a perforated recipe card, so you can punch them out and put them in a recipe box or keep them in the book. Before my LC days, I was a big fan of Taste at Home and its sister publications Quick Cooking and Light & Tasty. So I was thrilled to see this! Maybe a LC cooking magazine from them is not far behind???

The recipes look really good and normal...no exotic ingredients, so if you don't frequent the health food store, you should still be able to make these things. The most intriguing to me was breaded zucchini sticks, using wheat germ and parmesan as the breading...baked in the oven. YUM! Will have to try that as soon as it fits into my stage of the WOE.

In other news, I also got the little recipe book All-New Low-Carb Lifestyle, which is put out by Favorite Brands Home Recipes. They bill all the recipes as being 15 grams of carbs or less. However, a lot of them use real sugar or real breadcrumbs or full-carb phyllo dough or other higher carb items...so if you buy this one, modification might be needed for some recipes. Some of them sound good, but the numbers didn't look so good to me!

Mary,
Thanks for the heads up on the LC edition of *Taste of Home*. I also bought that publication pre LC days.
I'll look for it tomorrow at the grocery store.

Thanks again

Shelley

I always liked "Taste of Home," too, so I'll be on the lookout for this. Thanks for the heads-up.

I have the Low-Carb Lifestyle booklet; I got a free review copy (offer to subscribe). The recipes aren't bad, but as you point out many use things some of us avoid, white flour and sugar in particular. They do a good justification of the 15-carb limit, pointing that no one has decided officially what constitutes "low-carb."

Many of the recipes aren't original; they have just culled them from manufacturers' recipes (back of the box types of things), which a person could do free on the web, and many others are easy to find elsewhere (for example, the first recipe in the May/June issue is a very basic recipe for mashed cauliflower "potatoes" that consists, basically, of "cook it and mash it with some cream, milk, or broth.") The first three breakfast recipes all feature spinach prominently, and I'd almost bet they came from the Spinach Growers Association (or whoever represents greens growers). Many are credited to groups such as the National Pork Board, the California Tree Fruit Agreement, Kingsford charcoal, etc. There are several pages on pasta (13 recipes), but every single recipe is from Mueller's. I highly doubt they are actually kitchen-testing the recipes themselves; they are probably just taking the manufacturers' word for everything.

It is handy to have all these recipes pulled together in one place and save your own time on the web searching stuff out, but I'm not sure I think it's worth $3.99 a copy. The subscription offer I got was $14.95, and in the magazine it's listed as $23.94 (odd). That's for 6 issues. I think I'd probably buy an actual cookbook instead. I'll re-post after I get a chance to try out some of the recipes.
