| According to this site, garlic powder has 2 grams of carbs per teaspoon. I use it frequently when cooking chicken and the use of it has not hindered my weight loss.

| Yep; spices, herbs, extracts, condiments all have carbs, and it is easy to go overboard if you're not careful. I count them in as their actual number if I am writing up a recipe, so as to be as accurate as possible, but when I'm cooking, I toss and pinch and sprinkle way too much to calculate as I go. :cook: I try to just add a mental "five more" carbs per serving if I have seasoned with abandon. A good source for carb counts in spices is here.

| Be aware though, that most herbs and spices are very, very healthful and a majority of them are nearly all fiber. Garlic and onion are exceptions, but the health benefits outweigh the carb count IMO. Please, keep using your herbs and spices, but just add a bit to your counting is all |

| i agree i use spices in just about everything i cook. I don't really Measure them either. I don't know what made me look up the carb count on garlic powder (maybe i was bored) I will just have to make an effort to be more conscious about how much i use and to add more carbs to my count. |

| Garlic is king in my book! I don't use much powder though, mostly fresh. I buy those big containers of peeled cloves at Costco. Fresh garlic is roughly 1 carb per clove so if you're doing a "40 clove" type recipe, that's 40 carbs! Of course, like Sharron said, garlic is good for so I wouldn't worry much about a few extra carbs of garlic. If you are concerned, you can lightly smash a fresh garlic clove, add it to your dish/sauce as it's simmering, and then remove it before serving. This will infuse much of the essence of the garlic without the carbs. I used to do that when I was on induction (a LONG time ago) but now I just don't think about it

| I never, ever thought about carbs in spices and herbs. I look carefully at "spice" mixtures that obviously have fillers, but never gave the basic herbs and spices a thought. Most times, it wouldn't amount to much anyway. But it's good to be aware of! Thanks for bringing up this topic!! enlightening. clw56 one day at a time |
