Howdy Honey!!! Kefir is a yogurt like drink that you can brew at home. You have to have starter "grains" passed along to you by someone else. It contains WAY more beneficial bacteria and other good critters than yogurt. The grains look like gelatinous little cauliflower florets. You brew a TBS. or so of them in 2 cups of whole milk for 24 hours, strain them out and flavor the strained liquid with fruit or whatever and sweeten it the way you want to make smoothies. I like to add frozen strawberries and s/f strawberry syrup to mine. It's easier than doing your own yogurt, it has just a 24 hours cycle and then you do it over and over. I will look for the site where I've gotten all my info and post it here so you can do some research.

If you are interested in obtaining some grains, I have dried ones I can send out. Let me know.

Here's Dom's Kefir In-Site where you will learn anything and everything about kefiring. Happy reading!!!!! Here's a link to some pretty long kefir grains Mine are usually shorter and plumper, but they can grow into some pretty wild looking formations. And here's information on Activating Dried Kefir Grains

Honey, do you know how to Private Message here? Send me your address there and I will get some mailed out to you ASAP. Dried grains can take up to a week to reactivate, but usually it's around 3-4 days. (Hope your head doesn't explode reading everything on Dom's website, hehe.)

If you don't know how to PM, let me know and I'll explain it to you!!!!

Barb,

I have an issue with my KT. It has been sitting there for over a month now -- I just can't deal with it right now with everything that is going on. Do you know how long it will just sit there an be ok? Should I add some more sugar to it to feed the scoby???

Yanno, Sharron, I let mine sit for a long time........a month maybe. Mine is getting pretty low on fluid (evaporation) so I'm thinking of maybe making a couple cups of green tea and adding sugar and letting it cool off and just adding that. I would think that would be okay to do, although I've never done that before (as opposed to taking the mother out, pouring it all off and starting fresh). I would think that would work as long as you still have some converted tea left in the jar. I am sending a scoby to Jessicat so I have to make a new batch anyway. I can sure understand why you haven't been able to deal with anything extra. Maybe do 2 cups of tea and 1/4 cup of sugar???? That will at least feed it for a couple of weeks. I think you can leave multiple scobies in one batch of tea, but you have to feed the critters, since there's more colony living in there, the demand for sugar will get higher.

Barb,

I got dd to check on my KT over the weekend. I'm sure glad I did! One jar was nearly dried out We added some more starter to it and gave them both about 1/4 cup of sugar. Maybe I'm feeling well enough now that I can get a new batch going this week
