I have found my way back here after several months of severe computer problems, as well as a trip to Michigan and surgery for dh earlier this month. Things are finally back to normal - including being able to visit with my lce friends. During May I had an unwelcome and unexplained weight gain. Very strange as I was doing everything the same and yet over the course of three or so weeks I gained about 5 pounds. I'm also still dealing with lovely menopausal symptoms, so hormonal fluctuations may be the source of the gain. I was in a kind of a "what the heck" mood, as well as wondering whether my calcium intake was adequate, so I played around with adding dairy products back to my woe. This was very interesting - I have to say I'm not as attracted to the dairy foods as I once was. I think I will keep them as occasional treats but not as an everyday food. If I feel insecure about calcium there are always supplements. I'm just going off dairy today (had blue cheese dressing yesterday) so I will see if I notice a difference in the way I feel. In the past I had experienced a big decrease in my "stiffness" factor when I was off dairy. I'm really enjoying my veggies/fruits. I have started to try to eat nine different veggies/fruits every day, including some sea vegetable. That plus meat and some egg is my basic woe. I also have some nuts, but I tend to overeat those so I'm de-emphasizing them at the moment. I've been missing all of you and thinking about you while I was gone. It was so frustrating when I couldn't use the computer. Alice

Hi! I've been away too, had a computer melt down, it still locks up every once in a while which is completely frustrating, but at least I can log on now! I'm doing ok with this. I'm doing a paleo/schwarzbein sort of thing. It really is fairly easy to incorporate the two and live with it. My problem is that I've had company in and out of the house for the last couple of weeks and I've not adhered to my eating plan very well. I've gotten it back under control the last two days so hopefully that will keep me going. Angel

The Schwarzbein/paleo idea is interesting. What do you eat to get your carb level up? Root vegetables? Fruit? Audette lumps sweet potatoes in with regular potatoes, but I don't see the logic in that. They are not in the same plant family, sweet potatoes are edible raw, and starchy roots do seem to be part of hunter-gatherer diets, from what I've read. I look forward to eating a sweet potato now and then, when I raise my carb level. Good for you for getting back into it in spite of company. Alice

I eat fruit, also some nuts. I love oranges and apples as well as grapefruit so those are easy to fit into the meals, plus I feel better using those as my carbs rather than the pastas or breads. I feel "cleaner" if that makes any sense. I have no trouble getting my 60 g in each day.

Are you losing weight at 60 gms of carb per day? Does Schwarzbein count the whole carbohydrate content, or does she subtract fiber like Atkins, PP, etc? I used to use fitday.com to track what I ate, and I've got to say it was good for losing. Maybe I will try again and see what my carb level is, but I don't feel very motivated right now. It takes a strong commitment to measure and record everything. Back then I was averaging 50 total carb grams, and 20 fiber, for a net of 30 a day. That's averaged over about 7 weeks. It's amazing to me that it came out in such round numbers. I agree with you about eating more veggies/fruits instead of grains (even whole) and lc treats. It's much more nutritious, and I too feel better eating this way. I've come to regard my lc/paleo woe the way vegetarians regard their woe - other foods don't even seem edible to me. I know I used to eat them, and I'm fine seeing other people eat them, but to me there's no sense of denial, just, nope, I don't eat that, that's not even food. A great book about why grains - even whole grains - are not the best food choice is "Going Against the Grain," by Melissa Diane Smith. There are several other books with similar titles, but this is the best one (imho). It's great for helping us cave folk to see why replacing grains with veggies/fruit is better for our health. Ta ta for now Alice

| Sorry Alice, Just saw this post but answered you on the other one. It was reading what Angel was doing that started me re-reading Schwarzbein....I have finished the first book and will start the second tomorrow, I did not miss a single page this time around, ha-ha. I am going to take advantage of ? jacket potato now and then and maybe 1 slice of buttered toast for breakfast because I don't like eating much at that time of day...sounds perfect to me, so here I go again, wish me luck. love Louloo. x

Hi, sorry I've been away a few days. I am losing slowly but my clothes are getting very loose. That's progress in my book. I do not subtract the fiber because most non-starchy vegetables, raw, are not counted anyway. I am feeling good and am more optimistic about long term health and vitality with this way of eating and counting. Alice, I'm glad you feel better eating the fruits and vegetables. They are not processed and are so much healthier for us. I am looking forward to the next month or two..I know I'm going to be feeling great.
