Thumbs up Where to get your 5 GMS for OWL

Many folks, leaving induction, are at a loss about how to get their extra 5 carbs per day while seeking their CCLL (Critical Carbs for Losing Level). Here are some suggestions, according to the USDA.

Vegetables
1 10 oz package of fresh, raw spinach
1 cup raw red bell peppers
1 medium tomato (actually a fruit, but we think of it as a veggie)
1 1/2 cup cooked broccoli
18 medium asparagus
1 3/4 cup cauliflower
1 cup chopped onion (only 1/2 cup sweet onions)
1 1/2 cup summer squash or zucchini
2 cups (cubed, raw) eggplant

Dairy
5 ounces farmer's cheese or pot cheese
5 ounces mozzarella cheese
1 cup cottage cheese
3/4 cup ricotta cheese
3/4 cup heavy cream

Nuts and Seeds
macadamias (3 oz., approximately 35 nuts)
walnuts (2 oz, approximately 40 halves)
almonds (2 oz. approximately 40 nuts)
pecans (3 oz; approximately 60 halves)
hulled sunflower seeds (3 tablespoons - or 3/4 cup if still in the shell - Thanks, Lori! )

Fruits
1/3 cup blueberries (fresh)
3/4 cup raspberries (fresh)
3/4 cup strawberries (fresh)
1/2 cup cantaloupe or honeydew
1 avocado (lots of potassium here, ... got leg cramps?)

Juices
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup lime juice
1/2 cup tomato juice

What are your 5 gm foods?

Wow, thanks maggie. I have not been counting my nuts correct, i dont know why, but ive been counting 1 oz of pecans as 5grs, oh my im not sure if this is good for me to know, lol. Nah, im used to the 1 oz so i'll stick with it for caloric purposes.

You know just when you think youve got it covered, you always learn something that youve been doing incorrect. 7 months and still learning, Luckily the mistake wasnt the opposite way.

This is a really great sticky Maggie. Thanks again.

You make a good point, Celeste. Some of the carb counts (from the list I updated) came, I believe, from one of the Atkins books. They were much higher than the USDA numbers I got when re-checking them, and I tend to go with USDA numbers.

On the other hand, getting one's next 5 gm increment from ALL nuts, or ALL cream, is a very calorie dense way of doing it. To get the most variety & nutrients, choose mostly from the veggie category, and add bits from all the other categories, to make things interesting.

Thanks for this sticky Maggie. I asked this question in the induction forum and the answer was here all along. I love spinach broccoli and cauliflower. Looking forward to adding them to my meals in two days when I start OWL.

I must have missed your question, Sean, or I would have pointed you here. Glad you found your way to this thread anyway!

Yes, it sure is, Juliana. I hurried through this when I was doing it and stuck it in the wrong list. Duh!

I'll fix it. Thanks!

So adding another salad would be a good choice for your additional 5 grms?

salad 1 cup is 4 grms> Is this correct?

No, it's better than that. 3 cups of raw mixed greens is 4 gms of carbs, but also almost 4 gms of fiber. So you might want to consider spiking up your salad with some other raw veggies, or adding some raw veggies with some (non-diet) dressing to dip in, or just a little bit of various things added to your existing menu to make it more interesting.
