Lightbulb BaH! Processed meats and migraines

I started doing a "paleo twist" to my LC program a couple of years ago, but with all the busy-ness of book writing, etc., I must admit I'd gotten lazy...

Well, no more! We discovered a couple of weeks ago that the regular bacon I'd been giving us as a treat on weekends was causing dh to have horrible headaches! So we went to Wild Oats yesterday and bought a bunch of natural bacon, sausage, etc.

This is just basically a "heads up" for anyone who might have migraines -- nitrates are a common trigger that isn't usually mentioned on the lists, though I did find one along the way that did mention them. That is what made me suspect the bacon causing dh's headaches.

Mine were from tomatoes (a mild food sensitivity that I'd been having too frequently) and an infected sinus.

Anyway, we're both better and hopefully wiser!

You know it's funny you mention this. For the past year I've noticed I get headaches from too many deli meats, especially ham. Not severe headaches, mild but annoying ones.

Thanks for the info! I am prone to migraines. I figure it is mostly hormonal but I will definitely be on the lookout for a nitrate connection!

yeah, i'm pretty finicky when it comes to meat. i think the hog wild stuff is the best for price, taste, variety. their cottage bacon (canadian style) is great. the chubs of sausage are verry low fat and i have to use a bit of oil when cooking..... i also use it in my meatloaf. and bacon, yummm, what more can i say. we also buy grass fed beef for our freezer and will try lamb this year, as well. the price is right buying this way and the product is superior including the less obvious, like the better ratio of omega 3 to omega 6. go to eatwild.com then to the availability link and just click on your state. lots of options, usually. i guess there are other websites but this one has worked for me.
