Thanks.

We went to Hilton Head Island, SC, for vacation and I followed the diet when I could and didn't worry about it when I couldn't. I was afraid to weigh myself when I got home, but after a week on the road I gained only one pound. What a relief!

The "final push" is complete: Today, my doctor took me off my blood pressure medicine; I am officially "healthy".

A few weeks later and I'm holding pretty good. I'm up a bit this week, to almost 175, but I admit I've been lazy and eating stuff I know I shouldn't. About a week ago I was actually under 170 so I let myself indulge a little. Now it's time to reel it back in and get back to good eating.

Time for the final, final push. I hope.

I lost almost 70 lb. last year on the South Beach Diet.... and going into October, decided to enjoy the holidays a bit, diet be damned. I had gotten as low as 168 lb., and was maintaining about 170-175, but through the holidays I got back up to almost 190. By the end of last year, I was back to eating bread and drinking beer, both of which contributed to the weight gain.

That was all part of the plan.... kind of.... and the rest of the plan was that as of January 1 this year, I'd jump back on the diet. I've tried to get back as close to Phase I as I can stand: no obviously carby foods like bread and rice and pasta and tortillas (not even whole grain), and no alcohol of any kind, and trying to stick to sensibly small portions. It seems to be working, as I've been dropping almost a pound a day (I dropped 15 lb. in the first two weeks of SBD last year, so this is not unexpected). If I stick with Phase I the full two weeks, Phase II should be a pretty short run, and then I really need to read up on and FOLLOW the maintenance of Phase III.

Still off all my pills, although I've found if I eat too many things that are carby/spicy (i.e., Mexican), I get terrible, terrible indigestion. Last July, I actually went to the hospital because I thought maybe I was having a heart attack. I felt similarly lousy on New Years Eve after eating a variety of stuff at parties that included Mexican. Luckily, I still have some left over acid reflux medicine that seems to take care of that; I'll have to make sure I keep it in stock and don't run out. But taking them a couple times a year is much better than taking them every day.

So on Jan 1 *this* year, I weighed 189, and I'm already down to 186.

Actually, it's not that bad for me. I've developed a taste for merlot. This week was a setback already! I got sick.... like really bad cold sick.... and decided to eat whatever I wanted until I felt better. I'm just about all better now, so I guess tomorrow I'll be back on the diet.
