They are both sound low carb eating programs. In general, SB is more limited in amounts and kinds of fat and more generous in carbs (within the low glycemic group)

For me, choosing Atkins was a no-brainer. First of all, I'm not sure SB existed when I started, but even if it had, it wouldn't have been the right approach for me. Having pre-diabetic issues, some of the allowed foods on SB would not be good choices for me.

However, I truly believe that the plan you can follow is likely the better one for you.

I am pre diabetic also, and I started on atkins first. I think, to get you started, it is the best. Then after I was near my goal, and almost in maintenance, I switched to SB.. more choices, and I enjoy the things I couldn't have before. I don't think I could have lost on it like I did atkins, but like I said, it is great for when you are near, or at goal. You have to be a little careful tho, because with all the new choices you tend to go overboard...lol.

For me, South Beach is so much easier. The first two weeks are similar on both plans, but you get unlimited veggies with South Beach. I've had great success with SB in the past but decided to give Atkins a try this time and have been GAINING. You only get 3 cups of veggies a day (I usually am snacking on veggies constantly, so this is killing me) and can't have beans & cottage cheese in the beginning, so I feel like my Atkins options are very limited (I don't like many meats, any salty foods, creamy dressings, etc). But many people love it and have great success with it. Good luck with your decision.

My advice would be to read both DANDR and teh SouthBeach Diet books and see which one appeals to you more. You can always change later.
