I think I know what I'm going to do. I've been getting as much info as possible about Neanderthin and SBD. And the only conculsion I can come up with is to combine the two. In the 1st phase of SBD that won't be hard at all. In the 2nd phase though, I'm going to really focus on fruits and veggies for my carbs, but I do believe in eating peanuts, so I will eat those. However, I agree with Neanderthin about the agriculture aspect of dieting so I'm going to keep out the grains, corn, and potatoes. What do you all think? Does this sound like a good way to combine the 2? Thanks!! Amyfit

I would tend to recommend that you pick one plan, say SBD, and stick with it to the letter, for a month or so and see how it works for you. Then, when you have become comfortable with that plan, consider modifying it to a hybrid of SB and Neanderthin. After nearly 2 years on Atkins with no weight loss in over a year I switched to SB and have lost 7 lbs. this month. I am near my goal, so I am VERY happy with this loss. However, I think that once I have reached my goal I will modify the SB plan to something midway between the two plans. Also, I believe you were asking about diets that would help with thyroid problems.... Are you on a thyroid medication? Generally speaking, if you already have thyroid problems you want to stay away from all soy products; they, and, unfortunately peanuts, are somewhat Thyroid toxic (especially the soy). You should also stay away from raw broccoli. There are other foods that aren't thyroid-friendly. I would suggest you do a little web surfing to find out more about this. There are also several books on the subject. On the other hand, coconut oil is very pro-thyroid. YOu may consider obtaining coconut oil for use in cooking. Good luck with whatever plan you choose!

Thanks!! I'll check into the thyroid friendly foods!! Also, I think I'll go with SBD for a month like you said. I'm crying over no peanuts though. I just love peanut butter. Thanks for helping me out!! Amyfit

Let us know how your progress goes with SB! Peanuts are hard to live without-- but you can substitute almonds or pistachios and those are pretty darn good.

I am still new to SBD (since 10/13/03). I have read the book and thought I knew the plan. What is wrong with peanuts? I have been eating PB on celery since I started, or have 1/4 cup of peanuts as a snack. Sorry for being so in-the-dark.

Nothing is wrong with peanuts! I eat them frequently. They are only a potential problem if you have a thyroid disorder. If not-- enjoy!

Hi Kim - I was just reading through this thread for my own information. I've not read about SB, but have been Atkinsing for about a month with no real appreciable weight loss. Granted...I cheated over thanksgiving, but I have a friend who lost 16.5 pound on Atkins in half the time. I'm wondering if Atkins is not right for me. Were you able to pinpoint why you were able to lose on SB but not Atkins? I might be shopping for a plan soon. Jana Jana Berghoefer

I love macadameia(sp?) nuts!! Are they acceptable for SB and a thyroid? I didn't know about the soy. You know, as a woman, I've been making a big point of getting soy into my diet. I never knew that it might hinder my thyroid. Thanks!! Jana- I've never done Atkins, frankly I'm scared to. How how you felt on it? People tell me they're tired and their endurance is bad. Is that hte case for you? I've also heard other people say that the feel the best they ever have. Mostly men I've noticed tell me that. Hmmmmm..... Thanks again! amyfit

I spent quite a long time on Atkins and felt very well and had absolutely no problems with endurance (AFTER the first 2-3 weeks--an adjustment period), but after a respectable 7 lb. loss on induction, I went on to lose only about 4 more pounds over the next year and a half! I would have to say that it works amazingly well for many people, but some just don't see the results. With SB my fat intake is considerably lower and total calories lower as well. That apparently was all I needed, since I am down 7 lbs. in one month, and am only 5-6 lbs. from my goal (after all this time!). The first 2 weeks on SB are really very similar to Atkins induction, and are quite restrictive--I was hungry a lot! Missing my fat, I guess. But the hunger passed and the lbs. went. If you are not seeing results with Atkins, you would do well to give SB a try.

| Amy - I feel great on Atkins. That's why I'm sticking with it despite SLOW weight loss. I did manage to drop 3 pounds last week after quite a plateu. I'm reading Neandrathin now and will get to SB. I want as many different perspectives as possible, so I can make an informed decision on what's right for me. I did up the veggies and lower the cheese and fat intake....so I wonder if that's what got me past the plateu. I may have been eating more like SB....and getting better results.
