My husband and I started the South Beach diet on the 1st and we are following everything according to the book. Some recipes we have used are from the lowcarbcafe.com. and some are from the phase one plan in the book. We are getting discouraged because neither of us have lost any weight. My husband in particular is getting discouraged because he was an avid beer drinker and he thought just giving up the beer would at least show some signs of weight loss, not to mention following the diet. What are we doing wrong? Also, we bought the Ketostrips and they show only a trace....

Could you post some of your menus?? That would give us something to work with, since it is unusual not to show some loss after nearly 2 weeks. Maybe something there is a problem. Why are you using ketostix?? This WOE is NOT based on losing weight through ketosis (though in the first 2 weeks the carbs are low enough that you may be in ketosis), so there is no need to spend your money on those strips. Stick with it! A few people show little loss in phase 1, but start losing in phase 2. Are you drinking a bare minimum of 64 oz. of water (coffee, tea, soda don't count)?

hey Zoggie, do not get discouraged and tell your husband that I am a beer drinker as well, I am starting the program out today, well I got to do a bit more reading, but the induction phase works differently on people, he has to be very strict, now that he has taken the beer away he should drink lots of water instead, this is my 2nd go around at the atkins or a low carb diet because last time I did lose bout 25 to 30 lbs on the diet I did gained back for not making it my way of life... even though I lost bout 15 lbs on the induction phase a friend of mine didnt lose any on the 1st 2 weeks, but on the 2nd phase (he was a beer drinker as well jeje) and he actually went to lose in total bout 25 lbs and the good thing is that he did keep it off, dont feel discouraged, I just found this site and it has motivated me to restart my weight loss program keep going.... TomWaro It is not that I may look fat, it is the weight that becomes a burden to lift when I want to play with my kid....

The one thing I've been focusing on is my thoughts . So many times I've lost weight but always thought this diet is temporary until I lose weight, and I gained it back. Put it out of your mind that when you lose weight you can eat the stuff you want and do what you want, because if you do that you'll be back to square 1. I've really been focusing on getting my head into it , it's not the losing that's been hard it's how do I keep at my goal weight. Think thin act thin. Put the scale away for awhile, and go by how well you're sticking with the plan , and by how your clothes fit. There's much more involved in this whole process than just what we weigh. You can do it!!

What wonderful advice you have gotten. Please don't give up! It was so slow going for me too when I started. I was determined to keep going and I am glad that I am still sticking to it. For me the one thing that got me going again was that I am now watching my fat grams and I am keeping the grams between 20 and 25 per day. Since I have started to do that I have lost 22 pounds. We are all different at how different things work for us. I just do what works for me and I feel great. Good luck to you and your DH. Kim

I wish I had a success story for you only I am in the same boat. This is my second time on phase 1. The first time was incredible. I lost 8 pounds! Then the holidays came and I ate and drank whatever I wanted and gained all that weight back. Today I am on Day 11 of phase 1 and think I am may be down 2 pounds. I have been really stricktly sticking with the plan I have also been drinking 64 oz of water and walking 30-45 minutes a day. I am really feeling frustrated. I am not going to weigh myself again until day 1 of phase 2. I think something great will happen for both of us by then as long as we stick with the plan. Good luck. I'll keep checking back to see how you are doing.

Well....I don't have a wild success story, but I consider it a bit of a victory. I was on Atkins since October. I lost 8 pounds in a couple of months and had been stalled there for a couple of months now. I switched to SBD on Monday of this week and lost 2.5 pounds this week! I'm just happy to see some movement. While I don't consider SBD "low fat" I'm choosing only "good fats" and trying to eat leaner meat, less cream, and lower fat cheeses. Maybe it's working....I'm thrilled to see the scale move again. I can't believe I've only got about 13 more pounds to go until I'm considered in the healthy range! Nearly half way there and lovin' how I'm feeling. Jana Jana Berghoefer

I've been on SB for 2 weeks now and I lost 6 pounds. I have to admit that I was expecting to lose the 8 to 13 lbs in the first 2 weeks but it ain't gonna happen apparently. I'm not giving up though. I don't want this to be a quick fix for my weight problems...I want this to be a lifestyle change that I stick with. I've even been hitting my treadmill again for the first time in 18 months and believe me, I hate exercise. Hang in there and don't despair just stick with the program and give it some more time. My brother has been using this plan for the last year and has lost 45 lbs and 8 inches off his waist and belly.
