| Hello Everyone I am new to this Low Carb thing and I can't figure out what is the difference between Splenda and other sweetners..... I have reading that Splenda is better but why? I know there has to be a good reason but I can't figure it out and I was wondering if anyone knew the answer Thanks Cindy

| Hi Cindy, Welcome to LCE. Splenda is made from sugar, the other sweetners are not. If you are doing Atkins, his preference is splenda, as it does not effect the blood glucose in most folks. Saccharin is ok per Dr Atkins, but he does not recommend Aspartame (Nutrasweet) due to the chemicals it contains(possible carcinogens). There is also a natural sweetner called stevia. It is available in powder or extract form. Alot of folks here use SteviaPlus, myself included, and mix splenda and steviaplus to cook with. These 2 sweetners together are synergistic(enhance each other) and to me anyway, there is virtually no after taste. Liquid splenda, when you can get it, has no carbs or calories. Splenda in the packet has 1 carb per packet, and pourable splenda has about 1 carb per tsp. and this is due to the fillers that are added. HTH Shelley

| Cindy - there's an exhaustive thread here on these boards about sweetners which may interest you. I use Sweet-n-Low because -- well, I just always have. Before that, it was Sugar Twin (I'm showing my age). Just find what you like, what your body will tolerate, and stick with that. My husband has found that he cannot use any products with Splenda because it makes him sick to his stomach. Everyone's different.
