| Hi there, I am not new to the low carb forum. I have been doing atkiens now for about two years. I have a lot of success with this woe and have lost 70lbs but the last 8 months of so I have been having a very hard time sticking to it. I have gained back 20-lbs. I started induction and lost 12 and gained it back again. I think it is time for me to try something new. I need more variety of foods and I have been thinking of trying South beach. I don't know much about this woe and have some questions. How does this differ from atkiens? are you allowed more carbs, (fruits, veges, whole grains, etc.) How do you go about counting carbs? I have surfed around several sites on the net but can't really find the info I need. I do intend to buy the proper book if you can refer to the right one. For now some basic info would be great. I am despartely trying to find something that works for me in the long haul. Hugs Nancy |

| Welcome. The induction phase is about the same as atkins but that is about the only thing. The book is called "The South Beach Diet" When you get it make sure you read it cover to cover...it is the first step to success. After the first 2 weeks of induction you start adding back good carbs..healthy carbs, vegt...fruit and some breads etc....and you continue until your weight loss slows down or stops and then you back off of the carbs to just the point that keeps you losing weight. As far as counting carbs...it varies from person to person....someone could continue losing weight consuming 30 carbs a day where as someone else can only consume 25 to keep losing weight. Make sure you drink your water.......take your weight and divide by 2 and that is the amount of oz of water you should consume in a day. BUY THE BOOK. IT will answer a lot of your questions. Good luck and Welcome to this board. If you go over to the challenge board there are some challenges you might want to join in on to help you stay focused and get added support. | Thanks Tammy for the feedback. I do intend to get the book now that the Know the name of it. I am hopeing that this woe is more suited to my needs than atkiens. I am slowly cutting back on carbs again but won't start induction until I read the book. Thanks again Hugs Nancy 180-140 |

| I had the same issue as you Tammy and just posted it somewhere else that I haven't been able to get back on. However the question wasn't quite answered how it's different from Atkins. It seems like everything that you just decribed Nancy is the same thing as Atkins as far as adding things back in. Is there any real difference? |

| One difference I recall: Low-fat dairy products on SB; full-fat on Atkins

| The difference is the Fat contents. SB focuses on good carbs and lower fat where at atkins seems to have higher fat. Both work well it all depends on your personnal need and which one works for you. If atkins works for you do atkins. I use SB...I just couldn't handle all the fat with atkins. |
