Hey all~

I've been here before but only to lurk, thought I'd pop in to say hello.

Anywho, a little about me, I'm from North Dakota, I'm 28, single, have no children (yet) and have been obese my whole life. The lowest weight I've ever been was 215 pounds about 3 years ago. Then my brother died Thanksgiving Day 2003 and after that I just got lost in a depression, gained weight and now I cannot lose no matter how hard I try. It's just crazy how fast one could gain weight. Wish we can all lose weight as fast as we gain it. Of course then, there'd be no such thing as being over weight. LOL. I now weigh 310 pounds.

I'm interested in learning about the South Beach Diet. I tried the Atkins a couple of times actually, but it's like I was starving myself and the things I was supposed to eat, I just didn't want to eat because nothing tasted good. My older sister was on the Atkins and she lost 80 pounds in like 6 months. She lives by the diet. All we ever hear is low carb, Atkins, blah blah. Haha. I'm not putting the diet down, because I know it works if you work with it, but I am just curious about the South Beach Diet because with it you can eat more fruit and vegetables on it.

My goal is just to be healthy and to finally be able to do the things I cannot do now. I'm from North Dakota and I would love to learn how to snowboard, ski, I just don't do it now because I'm scared to fall, get hurt and I know how much more funny it would look seeing an over weight person trying it or am I just being crazy? lol.

Anyway, that's most of my story. Sorry to keep going on. Just wanted to say hello to everyone and oh yeah, has anyone joined The South Beach Diet Online? I was going to sign up today, but I just wanted to know if anyone here has signed up for it and how they liked it.

Well, thanks for reading my story and I hope to get to know some of you here

See ya~

Hi Joelle,
Welcome to LCE. Most folks here do follow low carb, more specifically, Atkins, but there are many low carb plans to choose from.
First of all, I'd advise you to choose a plan that you think you can make your WOLF(way of living forever). You might begin by reading a book called *The Secret to Low Carb Success* by Laura Richard. She talks about most of the low carb plans and that might help you pick one that you want to follow. South Beach came out AFTER her book so it won't be in there. You might have more opportunity for discussions if you post in the South Beach Forum also.
There are folks there who are great resoures for questions regarding SBD.

Anyway, pick your plan, read your book(it's kinda like a roadmap to success), follow your plan and you will be on your way! With any food plan, adequate water intake is a must, and at some point incorporate exercise into your daily life as well. Those things will help you become the healthy person you want to be.

Post often and let us know how you are doing.
Best wishes!
Shelley

Welcome, Joelle.

As Shelley said, you'll need the South Beach book to begin your journey. No matter which low carb eating plan you choose, it's important to have a road map.

Hope you'll make yourself at home.

Welcome Joelle!!! I haven't read the SBD book, but it is similar to Atkins. You CAN eat fruit and veggies on Atkins. the first two weeks the fruit is restricted, but after that you can add them back in. You might want to read other posts here, even tho they might be Atkins oriented. You'll learn a lot from us all.

Again, welcome aboard.
