Default So how do you handle it?

What's your outlook when you're presented with eating decisions out in the world? Do you tell others that you are low-carbing, or on a diet, or can't have sweets, or do you just keep it to yourself?

I tell others I'm on the diet. I figure it helps keep me honest because if people know I am low carbing and I feel like eating a carby snack, it gives me more will power to resist, since I don't want to "get caught" eating something I shouldn't.

i've seen people address this a lot of different ways. some maybe depending on who you're with. i know for some people, if they expect static, they may just say they are avoiding sugar and white flour so as not to hear the dire, erroneous predictions of misinformed but well-meaning people.

i've been doing this long enough myself that everybody pretty much knows i low carb and they know it's not a diet for me anymore...it's just how i eat. nobody i know could have missed the hundred pounds gone.

i do like to tell others that i eat low carb, though, because it gives me an opportunity to mention how great i feel, how i've lost LOTS of weight, how easy it is, and how great it is to eat the good stuff i do eat.

All my friends know I'm "still on THAT diet", as they usually put it. They know not to offer me sweets, or chips, etc.

Eating out, I don't care what restaurant staff think, I tell them what I want, if they can't accommodate me, then I'll take my business elsewhere. If I'm at a business dinner where I don't have control over the menu, I eat what I can, then leave the rest. I can always get a snack later.

If anyone asks how I've lost weight, I tell them proudly, "Low Carb!"

Since I inderstand that I am responsible for everything that I eat, I have no problem telling someone that offers me something that would be off-plan, a simple "No thanks". If circumstances require any more of an explanation, I use a variation of "I appreciate your offer, but, it only took me 40 years to finally understand that my body does 1 thing efficiently, process carbs directly to fat, consequently, I try to control what I eat. So, no thanks." If I am in a situation where there are limited l/c choices, I simply eat what I can and then wait until I can find more appropriate food. However, I do try to plan so that those types of situations are very rare.

I find when I actually tell people what kind of plan I'm on, it turns into a "is that really a safe way to go about losing weight?" debate. Lately I have caught myself just saying "no thanks I was hungry for...(whatever is on my plan) and now I have no room for cake, cookies, pie, cobbler"...I live in Louisiana and telling an ol Cajun woman that you don't eat cobbler or bread pudding could be considered fighting words. But if they think you filled up on their pork roast they let their guard down a little . Whew!

what a great idea! "the roast/steak/salad/veggie dish you made is SOOOOOO delicious, i couldn't stop myself before i was full and now, i can't manage to inhale another bite."

that's delightfully diplomatic.

See, now, this is the thing: I just got back from my grandmother's funeral in Buffalo. One of my cousins who's my age asked that. The funny thing is that he's probably 5'-10, 400 lb. My question for him is whether that's a safe way to live at all!

I usually keep it to myself. But if someone is curious as to why I chose this over that, I will divulge. Usually the people that give me grief are my over weight relatives.

Isn't that ironic? Maybe they have more vested in the idea LC is "unsafe" so they don't have to review it as an option for themselves...

Well Goddess,

They can't give up their bread or pasta or donuts. They are all big boned(giggle). And ,God forbid, have no time to exercise. I am sure you know the type.
