| I bought Kefir at the Ithaca farmers market yesterday. It was pretty good! I would like to try making my own, but don't have a source for Kefir grains. I suppose if I looked harder in Ithaca I would have found some, but I didn't have a lot of free time yesterday. If you have some Kefir grains to share, please let me know. You will have to tell me how much it costs, shipping, etc. Thanks for the help! ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ B/D/A Photos coming soon: http://www.geocities.com/susan5495/PhotosPage.html Susan 198/170/118 Started Atkins Aug 27, 2003 5'2" ICQ#: ask me, if you want to chat. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ |

| Yea, another fan of kefir! Check out Dom's sitehttp://users.chariot.net.au/~dna/kefirpage.html. I got my grains from him - he ships them dried with an instruction book for about $15. He also has a link where you can search for someone in your area who may have grains to share. It seems most people don't want to bother with drying the grains but it is very easy to do so and much easier to ship that way. Takes only about 24 - 36 hours to dry at room temperature and then about 3-4 days to become active again once you put them in milk. Good luck! Connie |

| Hi, Susan. I emailed you, but I just re-read your post. Heck, if you're near Ithaca, we could probably do a "hand-off!" (Hooterville is a mythical town - you gotta be old and into TV to get it. LOL!) I'm not unreasonably far from Ithaca. Let me know if you'd like to meet half-way or have me mail them to you. | Thanks Connie & Maggie! I have been to Dom's site and bookmarked it. It is a very comprehensive site, isn't it? Maggie, thanks for the emails and the offer to send me my starter! We are probably about 1-1/2 hours away from each other. I am in Southern Madison County. Until it arrives in the mail, I am enjoying my Ithaca brew! ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ B/D/A Photos coming soon: http://www.geocities.com/susan5495/PhotosPage.html My Fitday Public Journal: http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/PublicJ...wner=SusanM%2E Susan 198/170/118 Started Atkins Aug 27, 2003 5'2" ICQ#: ask me, if you want to chat. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ |

| Hi, Susan. I forgot to mention, in the email I just sent you, that your grains are on their way. I sent them out at lunchtime today, so I'm sure you'll have them in practically no time! I hope you enjoy all the great kefir I'm sure they'll make for you. Maggie 5'1" ~~ Atkins since '98 (160)/Maintaining nicely (110) ~~ Redhead until further notice! |

| Hi Maggie, this is Rita do you remember me from when you sent me grains?. Oh Yes I am at my goal weight btw tee hee hee- anyway I need to ask a question- I had to go home as my mother was really sick then she passed away but before I went I put grains in a glass jar ( pickle jar} with a metal lid---the lid has a somewhat plastic feel to the inside like it is coated with something- these are what I saved for when I returned but I didn't even think about the lid being metal - but my question is do you think the kefir is ok? or did it leach the lid properties -I put it in fresh milk when I returned and as far as I know the kefir did not touch the lid in anyway I was gone about a month - Rita |

| Sorry to hear about your mom. It sounds as if your kefir operation is just fine, Rita. You could dump the first batch - - if you just want to be sure. If your grains are working, I wouldn't worry about it, they're fine. The thing you worry about is some of the metal leaching into the kefir (not the grains, per se) once it gets acid. I suspect all is well. HAPPY to hear you're at goal! Way to go, Rita!
