I asked at several healthfood stores in Jacksonville Fla. and they didn't even know what it is! I went through page after page at the Dom's site, but never could find the link to a Buy Product page. Any of you terrific kefir gurus have a link? I'm really looking forward to trying it. I've been making Yocheese and I like it, but I still spike and crash so on to the better stuff.

Thanks for any help

congoman,

welcome to the LowCarbEating.com forums! I'm sorry you are having trouble locating kefir. Here in WA state we have it even in many of the normal grocery stores!

Dom doesn't sell anything. He has an information site. You can get grains from him for the cost of shipping, but I'm sure there is someone on this forum who is much closer to you than Australia! I'm also a "fer piece" away from you.

We used to have a thread of people who had grains and where they were located. Lemme see if I can find it. I'll bump it if I do.

Blessings!

Congoman, Lifeway and Helios are two of the most popular brands. Honestly, I'd be shocked if someone in your area didn't carry one or the other--however, I've been shocked before.

Here's are their websites:

http://www.heliosnutrition.com/

Perhaps contacting the companies would help you find a source. Making kefir is fun and less expensive, but it'd be great if you could try kefir first to make sure it's something you would enjoy.

Belive me, Kefir is hard to find in stores, even the good HF stores. It took me a very long time to finally find unflavored kefir at large HF store, 30 min. away from me. And I'm in So. Calif. where there's a HF store on every corner!
The best substitute I have found is plain, whole milk yogurt found at Trader Joe's. It's very watery, and really good. TJ's is at least easy to find.

TT, have you tried a food co-op? It will have some additives as compared to "home brew!"

Wow, Teri, I'm surprised! Usually the Midwest is the last place to get anything, and kefir is available in our bigger supermarkets as well as HFS's here. Live and learn.

If you want to order from a food co-op I used Ozark Cooperative when we lived in Alabama and I know they deliver in Florida too. However, you have to order a minimum amount so just to try kefir that option wouldn't work.

Did you ask at the HFS if they could order some in for you? They may be willing to get a couple of bottles in for you.

It would probably be cheaper to go ahead and get grains from someone and make it yourself. If you didn't like it (and THEN I would be shocked!) you could give the grains away or {{{Shudder!}}} throw them away! Ack!!!

Connie, our co-op here works differently. You don't have to order a set amount, but you do get a discount if you volunteer to work on delivery day.

You place your order approx. 2 weeks before delivery. The orders are delivered to a specific location here in town, the volunteers package each order, then you come by that day and pick it up. Neat, huh?

Actually, two years ago is when DJ ordered the kefir and we had our first sampling. We both loved it, she later found Dom's site and got grains directly from there.

It's great when you have a good group, for sure. I had been with a group that died off and was ordering on my own.

Oh, that takes me back. Dh#1 and I were members of a coop like your, Susan, when he was in grad school.

I've just joined another interested kind of coop--organized by a couple of family farms. We can get "organic" pasture raised beef, free range chickens and eggs, and raw milk cheeses once a month. No antibiotics, growth hormones, etc.... I can't wait for the first pick up. You can also buy a "cow share" to get raw milk.

HI, thanks for jumping in with suggestions. My server has been down all weekend and a relative died this a.m.. so I forgot about my kefir delima.
I really need the benefits of the kefir so I'm going to partake whether I like it or not! LOL

Hi Cognoman,
I'm so sorry to hear about your relative, I'll say a prayer for you and your family.

I'm in Jax too! and also have had a hard time finding health food. I'm at the beaches so Native Sun is too far to frequent. But I did find a place with kefir- Bio Max, on Atlantic Blvd a block or two from the water (near Ragtime). I just called, and found out they just got a shipment in today (They also have bulk and ground flax, which I had been totally unable to find here). The hours at Bio Max are kind of restrictive, 10am - 6pm, till 5pm on Saturday, not open on Sunday.

Hope this helps!
xoxo

Moochie, thanks for the locale info. The funeral is today (Thurs.) and maybe I can get away for a while and go get some. I don't live in Fla., but frequent the city for hard to find items. I really thought the Fresh Markit in Mandarin would have all the good stuff, but they don't. Oh for a Trader Joes in Jax!
