The latest issue of the Mayo Clinic Proceedings (2004;79:101-108) has a review article by Drs. James O'Keefe, Jr and Loren Cordain that may interest those of us intrigued by the NeanderThin approach. Its wordy title is "Cardiovascular Disease Resulting From a Diet and Lifestyle at Odds with Our Paleolithic Genome: How to Become a 21st Century Hunter-Gatherer." The authors give a nice, annotated review of the logic for going caveman. Then they briefly compare their interpretations of the Hunter-gatherer diet vs Atkins vs Ornish vs Mediterranean. In a nutshell, they take some exceptions to Atkins over saturated fats, possible lack of fiber, and possible lack of omega-3 fatty acids. They urge readers to simulate the paleolithic diet and lifestyle as closely are possible. Their view is that "the Mediterranean diet (is most) similar in composition to our ancestral hunter-gatherer diet..."

I most closely follow the Atkins WOE. I think the authors misunderstand and mis-state some of the Atkins principles and attitudes. But, I think this is one more useful article to educate the mainstream medical community about the hazards of the low-fat diet and alternatives to it that they should study.

Thanks Ed. That is VERY interesting.

I follow Atkins, mostly.....sorta.....well, I just eat mostly real, whole foods. Which might be closer to Paleo. I don't know.....have never read it. I suppose I will eventually. I love meat, veggies, berries, nuts, and KEFIR!!!!! So maybe I AM doing a form of Paleo. Do you suppose hunter-gatherers made chocolate covered nut clusters with shredded coconut? LOL, oh well, I gotta have my sweet treats too. (Think I'll go get 2 right now. )
