| Yesterday I started a test of 1 cup carb countdown, 1/2 cup milk (so my babies wouldn't starve in case it didn't work) and a big clump of grains from my main batch. As of this evening, I had complete separation. I strained it and it was very thick, nice texture, but sort of tasteless. Not quite sweet, but not sour either. Just sort of bland. I presume that the little buggers can't eat splenda, since it's not real food, so that never got turned into anything at all. Probably still splenda. I guess if you want that good lactic acid, you gotta start with lactose. Not sour, not right, not kefir. Gave those babies a big drink of real milk. I tought I heard them say "thank you ... you stupid human." as I poured the real thing into their house. (Brutus didn't mind it, so he can have some more in the AM. | Well, now we know Maggie. It was an interesting experiment, anyway. While yours are starving, and Sharron's are living on the fat of the land, mine are taking a winter vacation in the fridge until I use up some excess. BC 172/108/108--5'2" Zone since 4/98 |
