We Are Cave Folk, sung to the tune of I Am Woman

    (apologies to Helen Reddy)

We are cave folk, hear us roar,
We are stone age to the core
And we don't care for those neolithic grains.
We eat fish and we eat meat
Tons of veggies - such a treat
And our nuts and berries fortify our brains.

    Yes, we are wise,
Though our critics may be pained
    Yes, we are brave,
And just look how much we've gained,
    If we have to
    We can do anything
    We are strong
    We are invincible
    We are cave folk!

Oh, how we love to eat our greens,
But no potatoes, milk, or beans,
And no evil sugar - we don't even care.
We eat the chicken and the egg
We love the breast, the back, the leg
We eat liver, heart, and sweetbreads if we dare

    Yes, we are wise.....

Once we were tired and we were fat
But now we have no more of that
And our muscles we are flexing to grow strong
    We are learning every day
And we mean it when we say
That we're always going to sing our stone age song.

    Yes, we are wise....

Bravo Alice....very well written, I shall be singing this now for the rest of the night.

I wouldn't be any good at writing a song.....I wouldn't know where to start.

    Thanks,

    Take care,
    love Louloo. x

Ok, here's one based on Rule, Britannia!

When cave folk fiiiirst at heav'n's command
Arooooooooose from out the Aaaafrican plain
Arose, arose, arose froom out the Aafrican plain
    This was their diet
These gifts from sea and land
And guardian aaaaangels sing this strain:

    Rule, PALEOLITHIC!
    PALEOLITHIC rules the ways!
And cave folk never never never shall eat maize!

I consider this a work in progress. I wasn't thrilled with the maize at the end - I wanted something loftier and more global, but I find it's growing on me. The word needs to rhyme with "ways" and nothing else seemed possible. I didn't want to change ways. It's so close to the original verse's "waves" and I like the reference to "ways of eating."

On the lines starting "arose," it would be better to say "out on the African plain."

I guess I got hung up on the "azure main" line.

I learned to sing first verse and refrain of this song at summer camp in the mid-60's. There was a camper from the Netherlands. His English was very good, and he had learned "Rule Britannia" in his music class at school. The music teacher did not speak English, and I don't think their music book was much help with pronunciation or even a translation. He sang it to us without really knowing what the English words were, and we had to sort of figure it out. (No internet then, to look things up quickly)

The word "azure" was very hard for him. I don't think even the English teacher at his school had any idea what an "azure main" might be. In fact, we American kids had to have it explained to us too.

These songs have been fun for me - I find myself singing them throughout the day.

Thanks, BC, you and I are both old enough to remember I Am Woman. It sounds great in my head, but hard to really sing it.
