Welcome new kefir brewers!

May your adopted kefir babies give you many years of happiness!

You know, I was wondering if my babies would do anything to that new carb-countdown milk? I wonder if there's enough "food" for them in it?

I saw some the other day for the first time at the grocery store, but didn't stop to read the label. Next time I'm in that store I'm likely to pick some up and run a few tests with a couple of "volunteers" from my family. LOL!

If I do, I'll report the results.

I've been wondering the same thing Maggie. I don't have any at the moment, so I can't even check the label. I've been busy drying grains and need to let my crop grow again before trying any experiments. But that won't take long, they proliferate quite nicely.

Looking forward to your experiments.

I am going to give Sharron's Off Moo challenge a try and see if I can break this stall. That means no Kefir for awhile. I have some stashed in the frig, but maybe I should plop my babies in the frig for a few days to suspend them for a bit. I'll do that after I change their "food" today.

So where was the original kefir in this group from?

I used to drink kefir a lot as a kid, but it's so sweet now. I haven't been able to find the plain stuff around here.

Hey Terra - I think most of us have offspring of Dom's starter in Australia. I got mine directly from him. He has a great website too.

Terra, if you make your own you can control how sweet it is. Plain kefir is NOT sweet by any means. It's quite sour actually. Kefir grains originated in the Caucusus region of Russia. There are also Tibetan strains too.

If you are interested, anyone of us would be happy to ship some starter grains to you. Dom's site is MUCHO interesting!!!!

Hi All,

Well, in all of the disruption in my life, I lost my kefir grains. Does anyone have some to share? I live in NH, and will pay for priority shipping, if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance -

Sandy

I can, Sandy. We're both in the NE, so the shipping shouldn't be too bad.

Start a private topic with me (click on my name and choose "Invite Maggie to a private topic") and give me your name and address.

I'll be happy to send you some grains.

You can send me a check or pay by paypal after you get them for whatever the postage on the box says.

BTW, gang. I just started a Carb-countdown experiment this am. I used a cup of carb countdown and 1/2 cup milk - since I'm not sure, I don't want my volunteers to starve - tossed in one of my bigger grains and .... well, time will tell.

I'll report on progress tomorrow.

Very interesting! I can't wait to find out. I wonder how chocolate carb countdown kefir would taste? It might ruin the grains though. Or at least turn them brown.

Hi, Nutlover.

I had this "earmarked" to reply to and got distracted, and then the forum stopped "reminding" me.

I'd be happy to send you grains if you like. Mine are active and have to come in milk, so they're a bit more expensive than getting dried grains. (maybe $3-4 by priority)

Barb Keith also offered you dried grains in another thread.

Feel free to post a private topic to either Barb, or Kim or myself and one of us will get you started.

I may be partial, but Maggie's grains are thriving! They were sent to me by priority mail and were ready to go that day. I was having kefir smoothies the next day!

Thanks again Maggie! Your babies are growing up!

Nutlover and I have arranged to send her grains. So it's all taken care of. I just PT her with directions.
