Greetings, cave folks and friends,

Went to the grocery store today hungry and still upset over fights with dear children. Needed something fast to eat as soon as I got home. Kids got lc chocolate. I've been overdoing macadamias lately, but was still thinking I would get a nice treat for myself.

Guess what I had? Chicken/sun-dried tomato sausage and romaine. That was my treat. I hadn't had lettuce for several days (ran out). It was so good to have it again with my nice extra virgin olive oil and a squeeze of lemon. MMMMMMMMM! Seven strawberries for dessert. A lovely 21st century paleo meal. I feel so good - the inner and outer girls are both satisfied.

What do you guys eat when you're tired and cranky?

Alice, the happily purring cave woman

Well, I'm not entirely a cavewoman , but a coupla scrambled eggs are real comfort food. Even if I've just had them for breakfast. For heavy duty crankiness, nothing beats nice burger pattie with grilled onions. I know, I know, I'm a cheap date!

Cheap and thin - that's the way to go, BC! I love having a nice ribeye steak and fresh asparagus. And maybe a few fresh blueberries too!

Steak, grilled with onions peppers and mushrooms... something to sink my teeth into it keeps me from chewing people's butts(husband, child, employees)

Great idea, Jackie! I have to remember that.

You guys are making me hungry - good thing I don't have to wait to be cranky to eat all those good things.

My favorite comfort food is a homemade steak salad. I grill the steaks on the GF and then slice it thin. I make a huge salad with lots of things in it to chew. i.e.: celery, jicama, cucumbers... Then make a good creamy horseradish dressing. (Mayo, horseradish, lc steak sauce, onion, and gralic powder, salt pepper) I love this and try to have it once a week. Like Jackie said, It is something to chew on to keep my mouth from chewing others out. LOL

So very true, caveladies. Umm, Jen--steak salad. We could chew, chew, chew that anger away, snapping and crunching and pulverizing all those irritations (and irritating people). Take That! And That! And That!

I'm really drooling over that steak salad idea. It would be fast. If I'm grocery shopping while angry, all the ingredients are ready to hand. The chewing will keep me busy, and it's something the kids will eat. It's even paleo!

Jen, this may be the perfect meal. I should plan to have it often.

Melt creamed coconut and add pecans/walnuts (raisens if you're at your ideal weight). Put in fridge to harden. Yummy and crunchy. Good comfort food (and all the effort in crunching relieves stress)

OOh, Kateryna, I'll have to try that. No dried fruit for me yet, though. I think I've heard of creamed coconut, but I've never tried it. I have read on this board that coconut milk "hardens" in the refrigerator, so do you think I could make it with coconut milk?

Glad to meet another cave person. (Roooar)

Never tried it with coconut milk but I suppose you can try. Creamed coconut comes in a package wrapped in paper like butter, about half the size but not refrigeated. It's much thicker than the milk. I've had no desire to do it with the milk though. Thanks for the welcome. ROOOAAAARRRRR!

I'll be looking for the creamed coconut at the Asian market. If I ever try it with coconut milk, I'll let you know.

We're experimenting with coconut milk kefir on the "off your moo" thread in the challenge clubs forum. I sampled my first batch of coconut kefir yesterday and it was really good.

I've been eating paleo-style since mid-November. No fruit except berries, some vinegar and soy sauce occasionally, and I still eat butter, otherwise pretty straight arrow. I'd love to hear your cave stories (HOOOOWWWLLLL).

Hello Alice:
I fell off the wagon around Valentine's Day (I survived two christmas's, regular and orthodox without cheating, then came Valentine's Day, sigh). Anyway I'm back on track.

The best thing about Paleo to quote Ray Audette is to "Eat when you're hungry." And I do. I do not restrict fat (olive and coconut oil). I eat all fruits except bananas and dried. All vegetables except beans (including green), soy, corn, peas, potatoes, high glycemic. All meats, seafood, eggs, poultry. All nuts except cashews and peanuts. I do not restrict my nut, fruit and vegetable intake at all and eat when I am hungry. I eat nothing processed and very little dairy except in my coffee as mentioned below.
The only exception is coffee in the a.m. with heavy cream. Because of my unlimited allowed fruit, vegetable, nut, meat, egg and absolutely no processed regimen, I find that I lose weight slowly, feel great and almost never feel like cheating. That's my story and thanks for asking.

Hi, Kateryna,

Do you eat beets, parsnips, and/or sweet potatoes?

I love when you say you eat fruit. I'm going to try a little and see what happens.

I'm also interested that you don't limit your nuts and keep losing. I love nuts (really, really) and find it hard to stop. I've been on a Brazil nut craze lately. Have been losing this week, been walking almost every day, maybe that helps.

I do eat green beans occasionally, on the grounds that they are edible raw. I think h-g's would eat the wild equiavalent of them. On the other hand, they probably have those bad lectins in them and maybe that does mean I shouldn't eat them.

I don't mind losing slowly, but I was stalled from 9/02 to 4/03 when I started to gain. I attributed the stall to a combination of dairy, too many nuts, and menopause. The gain I attributed to fruit. I lost about half what I'd gained by giving up fruit (kept berries), and the rest by stopping dairy foods and measuring nuts. I've kept losing to about 10 pounds below where I stalled in 9/02 (yay!).

I love the Neanderthin foods, and dairy is not even a temptation for me anymore. As in the name of this thread, I love my meat and vegetables and feel so good when I eat them. But I see those as the "serious and earnest" foods. Fruit and nuts are the "fun" foods, at least for me. I'm going to see how much fun I can have and keep losing, no matter how slowly.

So nice to have you to talk these things over with!

Alice
